3 MAHARAJAH The Trotter That Never Tires Leading Swedish trainer Stefan Hultman has very high hopes for his trotter Maharajah calling the Viking Kronos five-year-old the best trotter he has ever trained. By Robert Okpu Photos by Kanal 75 / Stockholm Top Swedish trainer Stefan Hultman has won the prestigious Elitlopp, beating world class trotters like Scarlet Knight and Victory Tilly. He has also won the Prix de France in a world record time, defeating a superstar like Jag de Bellouet. But there is no hesitation whatsoever in his voice when he says: Maharajah is the best trotter I have ever trained, by a wide margin! The five-year-old Viking Kronos son Maharajah is all the buzz on the Swedish trotting scene right now. When the horse was voted Four Year Old of the year at the annual trotting awards in Gothenburg in January he received 99.4 per cent of the vote and the only thing that surprised those present was how anyone at all could have voted against him. The whole of the Swedish racing community is already looking forward to the probable supermatch in the Elitlopp in May: Lucky Jim versus Maharajah. Stefan Hultman is also looking forward to the summer. I know that Maharajah is definitely capable of trotting 1:52 on the outside of Lucky Jim on Solvalla s 1,000 metre track without any problem at all, Hultman says. Having said that, although Maharajah s sheer brute force has rendered those willing to challenge

4 MAHARAJAH THE TROTTER THAT NEVER TIRES him on the track in 2008 and 2009 as run over victims, it should be noted that for a horse that his trainer claims is ready to conquer the world, Maharajah s CV is still a bit thin. His reputation is mostly based on his seemingly enormous potential and the ease with which he has won his races and above all, on one shattering performance at Jagersro in Sweden on September 6 last year which may be viewed by clicking here. It was the Swedish Trotting Derby, the biggest race for Swedish born four-yearolds, offering 1.6 million Swedish crowns to the winner ($210,000 US). Normally Maharajah, who as a threeyear-old had easily defeated the best in the crop in the most important showdown, the Swedish Kriterium, would have been odds on favourite in the Derby but his summer had raised some doubts. He had lost his only head-to-head battle with Stig H. Johansson s Germanborn star Nu Pagadi, albeit sick according to rumours, and some people were beginning to question whether Maharajah really was the trotting monster that Stefan Hultman had been talking about all along. And a formidable challenger had Maharajah's outstanding showing in 2009 led to his nearly unanimous choice as Sweden's Four Year Old of the season as he received 99.4 per cent of the vote leading some to wonder who would vote against him. emerged for the Derby: Yield Boko (also by Viking Kronos), a solid wire to wire winner who was much quicker off the gate than Maharajah in his races, more consistent and with bags of speed. Yield Boko came to the Derby with eight straight wins against good opposition and was undefeated at that point in Could Maharjah, with his possibly shaky form, really take this horse down? The punters could not make up their minds and the horses were sent off as joint favourites in the race. Yield Boko went for the lead as expected, and driver Bjorn Goop set his mind on another wire to wire victory. But what happened next will never be forgotten by the spectators present at Jagersro that Sunday. The Swedish Trotting Derby is raced over 2,640 meters and the extra fiveeighths on top of the mile were definitely in Maharajah s favour and Stefan Hultman was counting on the strength and stamina of his horse to outweigh Yield Boko s speed. Maharajah s driver Orjan Kihlstrom shared those thoughts. After a safe start, he advanced his horse to the outside of Yield Boko and soon Maharajah s flowing stride was forcing Yield Boko to trot faster than Goop was comfortable with. Both horses were ripping off quarter times as if it was a sprint race and Goop realized that he was stuck between a rock and a hard place. Giving up the lead was equal to giving up the race and quite unthinkable, but standing up to Maharajah was likely to come at a heavy price. The die was already cast. Goop held Maharajah off as long as he could, but on the far stretch Yield Boko was already beginning to struggle. Maharajah s stride was even more flowing than it had been at the beginning of the race and when both horses came into the turn it was all over. Yield Boko caved in completely, and it was obvious he was not even going to come second or third for that matter. March 2010 The Harness Edge

6 MAHARAJAH THE TROTTER THAT NEVER TIRES When Maharajah hit the home straight he had simply blown them away, and the crowd frantically applauded one of the most impressive winners of the Swedish Trotting Derby, ever. The winning kilometre time of (1:57.1 mile rate) completely shattered the previous race record. Still Maharajah had not been pushed to apply himself to the limit. There were fractions left, he could have gone even faster, Hultman says. The next time Maharajah showed up was in Tammerfors in Finland some weeks later, where he convincingly won the European Trotting Derby by many lengths, completely humiliating the French horses that came to challenge him. Even though Maharajah never met older horses during his three or four-year old season his trainer Stefan Hultman is completely convinced. He is the best horse that I have ever trained, by a wide margin. I trained From Above who won the Swedish Kriterium, the Swedish Trotting Derby and the Elitlopp in successive seasons. He was a great racehorse, in the Elitlopp From Above beat Victory Tilly and Scarlet Knight, but he is not comparable to Maharajah. Leading Swedish trainer Stefan Hultman has had his share of outstanding trotters but he believes Maharajah is the best ever. He is the best horse that I have ever trained, by a wide margin," he says. Maharajah is something else! Stefan Hultman s big dream for Maharajah is the Prix d Amerique There is so much left to improve in this horse, his potential is scary. But I have been very, very careful with him. If I had been a North American trainer of course I would have had to prepare him for the Hambletonian as a three-year-old, which is what it is all about. But with this horse I am in no hurry. He has won the biggest races for the three-year olds and four-year olds in Sweden, and this season we are prepared to compete against anyone. Stefan Hultman says that neither the 1,000 metre track at Solvalla nor the mile trip in the Elitlopp is ideal for his horse. But he believes the sheer quality of the animal should be enough to compete for victory. I have not made a definite call on the Elitlopp yet. Right now Maharajah is doing 12 mile forest workouts to build up his stamina. He will probably race for the first time this year at the end of April or the beginning of May, and if everything looks fine then we may very well go for the Elitlopp, says Stefan. He needs to improve his technique a bit, he runs and shifts like we say in Sweden, his gait is a bit French and it comes from his granddam s French-blooded sire Tibur. Hultman believes that the mile trip in the Elitlopp, while not ideal, is not a big problem. I do not have any horse in my stable that can beat Maharajah over any distance. Not Triton Sund or Jaded or anyone else. And I am really looking forward to racing Maharajah without shoes, I think the result may be incredible. He is also looking forward to an eventual clash with the top American trotter Lucky Jim. Lucky Jim is a fantastic horse. It s really necessary for us in Europe that the very best horses from North America come here to compete once in a while. March 2010 The Harness Edge

8 MAHARAJAH THE TROTTER THAT NEVER TIRES Being a Swedish race, the Elitlopp would normally be Maharajah s number one priority this year. But Hultman explains why that is not the case. I have never won the Prix d Amerique. That would be a dream for me and that is the big objective. Hultman almost aimed for the 2010 Prix d Amerique, won in a huge upset by Oyonnax in January, but he stopped himself at the last moment. After Maharajah s hands down victory in the European Derby, I was a bit worried because the track in Finland was very hard. I did not know how Maharajah had been affected by it. So I made up my mind to start him in the Breeders Crown for four-year-olds at Solvalla. I said to myself, If he wins that easily as well, why wait, we will go for the Prix d Amerique then. But Maharajah, sent off as a huge favourite at Solvalla in the Breeders Crown, was just too hot on the night and made a break immediately, losing 100 metres before the race had even started. His driver Kihlstrom gave up the race and Hultman called it a season as well. I decided it was enough. Some years ago I had a very good horse called Naglo and I went for the Prix d Amerique for him at the end of his four-year-old season. He wasn t quite ready and finished fourth as a favourite even though he went on to win the Prix de France in a world record time over 2,100 metres some weeks later defeating Jag de Bellouet. But I had learned my lesson. You have to prepare a horse properly for a big race like the Prix d Amerique, you can t just let a horse compete in race after race just because you as a trainer egoistically would like to win big races. Actually, during 2009 the trainer trod very carefully, never starting Maharajah against older horses. As a result of this, Torvald Palema (by Alf Palema) won the three biggest races in Sweden for older horses: the Elitlopp, the Hugo Abergs and the Aby Stora Pris. Torvald Palema and Maharajah were more or less the only two horses that got any votes when the Swedish Horse of the Year was crowned at a gala in Gothenburg in January, but Torvald Palema won. Hultman just shrugs his shoulders. I think Vincennes in Paris and The Red Mile at Lexington are the two best trotting tracks in the world, and I would really love to race Maharajah on both of them. In Europe, there is big money available for the older horses every summer. There is absolutely no need whatsoever to be in any hurry with a good horse. When Maharajah was a two-year-old I realized his capacity, and I told everybody in the stable This is it. I am training this horse so that he can compete and win the Prix d Amerique as a 10 year-old if need be. It s not like in North America when you just have one shot at the Hambletonian and the Triple Crown, then game over more or less. The only thing Maharajah lacked as a two-year-old was early speed, but Stefan was patient. Hultman says he would love to race Maharajah on mile tracks in North America, but this is not likely to happen until This is a strong horse that would do excellently on a mile track, or on any big track as compared to the 1,000 metre tracks we have in Sweden. I was at The Red Mile in Lexington when Giant Diablo set her world record, and I know that Maharajah can trot faster there than her 1:50.1. I think Vincennes in Paris and The Red Mile at Lexington are the two best trotting tracks in the world, and I would really love to race Maharajah on both of them. Hultman does not rule out a visit to Canada in the future either. Foreign horses are treated better in Canada than at the Meadowlands. I raced Jaded in the Nat Ray Trot in the summer of 2007 and our visit to the Meadowlands was awful. The horse was not allowed to leave the stable in the morning due to quarantine regulations; we were not allowed to exercise him until the afternoon when it was awfully hot. It was very unfair, I can only applaud Adrian Chip who came second in the Hambletonian after being treated in that way. Hultman is no stranger to Canadian racing as he competed in the Maple Leaf Trot with Triton Sund last summer. His driver said Triton Sund felt great when he was impeded and made a break on the last turn, it was such a shame. On that particular day Kihlstrom was sure he would have beaten Lucky Jim if not for that incident, maybe even competed with winner San Pail. Like I ve said, Maharajah is clearly a better horse than Triton Sund, over any distance. And he is much quicker off the gate even though Orjan has never bothered to show it, says Hultman. When asked to give a direct answer about Maharajah s actual potential you would maybe expect Stefan Hultman to reel off the Beach Boys famous line God only knows, but he says: Only his driver Orjan Kihlstrom knows for sure. Hultman and Kihlstrom are childhood friends since they were about 15 years old. Stefan was already working at Solvalla as a groom for legendary Swedish trainer Gunnar Nordin and Orjan was working for his father Orjan Kihlstrom. Orjan has done a great job driving the horse. He never pushes him at all. I know Maharajah is much quicker off the gate than, for example, Triton Sund, but Orjan has been saving everything. If he knows Maharjah is going to win a race anyway, he just lets him jog along. He March 2010 The Harness Edge

Stefan Hultman seems reluctant to admit that Maharajah, dubbed The Trotter That Never Tires, has any limitations. However, I may as well say that he is never going to reel off devastating last quarters like Torvald Palema. He is never going to blow a field away if he is last coming into the stretch and the others are full of go. On the other hand, this horse just never gets tired. You can go flat out with him as soon as he has settled down. He just won t slow down once you let him go, he is like a freight train. Stefan does not think it is a coincidence that his top horse is sired by Viking Kronos, Sweden s best stallion at the moment. He is completely comparable to the likes of Andover Hall and the best of them. Unfortunately, his fertility is poor otherwise I am convinced that Viking Kronos could have been tested, probably with success, in North America as well. Maharajah was bred by the Menhammar Stud, Sweden s leading breeding operation at the moment, belonging to the shipping empire owner Margareta Wallenius-Kleberg, board member of The Hambletonian Society. Menhammar Stud is also Hultman s main backer and have been since he was a struggling trainer. But for the past 10 years Hultman has consistently been one of Sweden s top trainers and he has a history with the Maharajah bloodline. I trained Maharjah s dam Chili Khan and she was a decent 1:57 trotter. I see all Menhammar s yearlings before they go to public auction and if there is any horse I really want, I buy the horse before the auctions. Chili Khan had two foals by Zoot Suit before Maharajah, but their legs were quite short and none of them looked like a star. They did not appeal to me, but her third foal was by Viking Kronos and his exterior was very correct. I liked him the moment I saw him. Today Maharajah is owned by Travkompaniet, a trotting club with 5,000 members run by Margareta Wallenius-Kleberg s son Jonas Kleberg and his friends Anders Nilsson and Sussie Eriksson. Travkompaniet owns several horses trained by Hultman, including Marshland who came second to Maharajah in the 2009 Swedish Derby. On the far horizon, Maharajah may well become a star sire at Menhammar Stud himself. He would probably be a great sire. The best thing would be to breed him to lots of American mares, like Conway Hall or Andover Hall mares, for their speed. But first Maharajah is setting out to conquer the world. The stage is set for 2010 and this time there will be no excuses. When Maharajah lost to Nu Pagadi last summer he had an infection, he was on penicillin for quite a while after that. Nu Pagadi is a top horse, but Maharajah was only 50 per cent that day or less, so that does no bother me at all. At the end of April or the beginning of May his campaign will start with an ordinary race here in Sweden and after that we are ready to meet all comers! Only time will tell if Maharajah is the world s best trotter. But Stefan Hultman, popularly called The Hulk because of his huge stature and his green stable dress, is betting his reputation on it.
