1 RADIOLOGIC SCIENCES CLINICAL HANDBOOK DIAGNOSTIC MEDICAL SONOGRAPHY Clinical Internship II
2 RAD 441 CLINICAL INTERNSHIP II The sonography student is assigned to one or more clinical site(s) for the first 8 weeks of the 11- week summer semester for a total of 40 hrs./week. Primary emphasis will be on spectral/color flow /Doppler, ultrasound guidance procedures, and other advanced level skills necessary for entry level employment. Demonstration of competence in these areas, as well as repeat demonstration of competencies performed during Clinical Internship I will be required. The clinical instructor is responsible for providing adequate observation, guidance and scanning opportunity. The clinical instructor(s) shall be available to the student, provide appropriate clinical supervision, and be responsible for periodic student clinical evaluations. When the intern has independently demonstrated competent scanning skills, a competency evaluation form shall be completed by the clinical instructor or assigned RDMS who is appropriately credentialed in that area. This form shall reflect the intern s ability as demonstrated on a mutually agreed upon patient exam. The competency form must be signed and dated by both the clinical instructor and intern. The intern may request to be re-evaluated at a later date for a better score. All evaluation forms are to be forwarded to the ultrasound program for grading purposes. The intern shall not perform an ultrasound exam without direct supervision until proof of competency has been documented. -Each of the following competencies must be completed during the internship: Category I Category II Gallbladder Abdominal Doppler Liver -Hepatic artery Pancreas -Hepatic vein Spleen -Portal vein Kidney -Aorta Aorta -IVC Transabdominal non-gravid pelvis -SMA 1 st trimester gravid pelvis/limited OB -SMV 2 nd trimester complete OB -Renal artery Endovaginal -Renal vein Thyroid Ultrasound Guidance Category III - Competencies from 2 of the following exams must be completed: Breast Scrotum Pylorus Appendix Prostate Adrenals Soft tissue mass (Baker cyst, lipoma, etc.) NOTE: Clinical competency forms for summer clinical are scored differently from spring clinical. Be sure to use proper form.
3 Summer Attendance Policy Attendance in compliance with the Summer Semester Calendar is expected to insure successful completion of requirements (See attendance policy in General Clinical Policies section). Opportunity to complete any make-up hours is provided (with approval of clinical instructor) during the transition week between clinical rotation and on-campus seminar session. ANY variance of clinical attendance must be approved by your SIU instructor to insure liability coverage at the clinical site. Final Grade will be calculated accordingly: Orientation assignment = 5 points Protocol Assignment = 20 points Clinical competencies = 288 points WEB assignments = 82 points Personal/Professional Assessment = 60 points (30 points each x 2) Total 455 points A = B = C = D = F = < 316 Orientation Assignment 1. Submit a minimum of 1 page typed and double-spaced describing your orientation experience. Include the names and titles of those with whom you will be interacting. 2. Complete and submit the forms due on week one (See Appendix) (Part 1 may be sent as a blackboard attachment. Part 2 may be hand delivered or sent by US mail.) Protocol Paper State the protocol for all Abd/Small Parts & OB/Gyn exams performed at your institution. This information should be made available to you from the department manual.
