23 THE SUMMER OPPORTUNITY Jami Pettway Senior Director, Summer Learning Loss

24 There is no other time of year when inequalities are greater in the United States than during summer million kids (3 out of 4) do not have access to critical summer learning programs 75% of the achievement gap between lower and higher income youth can be attributed to unequal access to summer learning opportunities 24

25 Summer learning losses are cumulative and have a greater impact on lower-income youth. 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th Low-income students lose an average of more than two months in reading achievement in summer. By the end of fifth grade, disadvantaged children are nearly 3 grade equivalents behind their more affluent peers in reading. Studies show 6-week summer learning programs can produce statistically significant gains in reading performance.

26 Summer Brain Gain uses balanced instruction and project-based learning to engage youth Marzano s High Yield Strategies; proven to result in percentile gains on standardized tests.
