2 St Margaret s New Resident Rep We are pleased to announce that Ruth Horton is the new Resident Representative for St Margaret s. I had a quick chat with Ruth to congratulate her, and also ask her a few questions. How long have you lived at St Margaret s and what do you enjoy about living here? I have lived at St Margaret s since I love living here because the residents are nice, and there is always a friendly atmosphere. Why did you decide to put yourself forward for Resident Rep? It was mentioned to me at a coffee morning Beryl Steele organises, and a few residents mentioned I would be good at this so I thought a new challenge would be exciting. What are you most looking forward to achieving? I would like to start new clubs and activities for the residents to attend which would make everyone more sociable and they also have something to look forward to. Maintenance ST Margaret s Almshouses communal areas: The lighting upgrades are currently underway and the redecoration works will start on Monday 1 st December in Flats 1-3 before moving onto blocks 5-6, 9-12 & finishing on block St Margaret s, November 2014 Ruth Horton, St Margaret s

3 To ALL Residents St Bartholomew s A Christmas message from the CEO, Kathryn Lewis Dr Jenner s Immunisation hut, Berkeley Christmas is a very special time. It s a time for family and friends to get together, a time to reflect on the year gone by and to celebrate the start of a New Year and the fresh hope that it may bring. It is a time for us to send good wishes to those we care about. Those of us who celebrate in this way are very fortunate, others are less so. I am one of the lucky ones; I have a close knit family who enjoy spending time together especially at this time of year. Christmas should be a time for giving and receiving, a time for sharing and for caring for each other. It is a time for reaching out the hand of friendship and reconciliation and to making sure all in the GCT community are included. Please spare a thought for a neighbour who may be in need of some help and support this Christmas and extend the hand of friendship to them. I am honoured to be the CEO of the Trust and am very proud of the staff who work hard to provide the best standard of accommodation and services for you all. I would like to thank them for the excellent work they do and for the entire team effort in helping the Trust achieve its aims and objectives. 4 St Philip s Court St Philips s Court Cream Tea, October 2014 Cream Tea On the 22nd. of October Margaret held a Cream Tea for all residents at St Philip s Court. This was gratefully received by many residents from St Philip s along with a few from St Margaret s who turned up for tea, coffee, scones with jam & cream and plenty of biscuits to go round. The atmosphere was warm and jolly with lots of giggles and pleasant conversation. We would like to see this again hopefully with participation from all sites - some time in the new year! MBS BCLM Residents enjoyed an interesting albeit slightly chilly October day at The Black Country Living Museum. The BCLM show cases the industrial revolution as it took off and dominated this geographical area.. for better or worse. Some Residents chose to wait nearly 40 minutes while staff queued to fetch the famous Fish n Chips but those who did unanimously agreed it was worth the wait. Page 5: Queuing outside Hobbs & Son... Free Admission The return of the popular German Style Christmas market with over 40 traditional chalets selling a wide range of festive crafts and gifts. 4

5 Coffee Morning On the 29th of October Margaret held a coffee morning for St Mark s Residents to inquire about the residents interest in having a Breakfast Club as recently seen at St Bartholomew s or a Cream tea like St Philip s (page 4). Three Residents turned up for the coffee morning. Our Residents at St Mark s Court are very independent, Margaret said, a lot of the people at this site go about their own lives and are out during the day ; so it was decided not to try getting Residents together for a Breakfast Club or Cream Tea at this point in time. 6 Your Sub Editor Alan Darke writes Well, Christmas has arrived. The time of good cheer and goodwill to all. It is one of the most important in the religious calendar. Regrettably, I think, the true meaning of Christmas has been overtaken by commercialism. Gone are the days when we had to wait to see what presents we were going to get. Now commercial Sub Editor Alan Darke pressures on the children by television adverts etc. mean that they tell their parents what they want. How often do we see parents loaded with bags loaded with expensive toys and other electronic games and gadgets. But in spite of this, we still remember the true meaning of Christmas and continue to wish one another a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year as we do to all residents and all the staff and everyone that look after us. MERRY CHRISTMAS, EVERYONE! A.D. Remembrance Service A Remembrance Service was held on Thursday the 6th of November at St Margaret s Chapel with prayers and hymns followed by tea and coffee for the select few who attended. There will be a Christmas Service with carol singing on December 18th at 2pm. Open to all... Remembrance Service, St Margaret s Chapel, November

7 Head Office Compliance Manger Joy Nicholls has transferred from Guild House to Head Office to become our new part-time compliance manager. This newly created role will entail monitoring the audits throughout the Trust to ensure compliance with external rules and regulations. Magdalen House Fun and Fitness sessions with Simon go down very well with residents at Magdalen House. We have lots of laughs along with some gentle stretches, some competitive games, a bit of massage, and Simon s terrible jokes!!! It can only do us all lots of good as you can see from the pictures!! We wish Joy all the success in her new role. The Monday Club MacmIllan Coffee Morning Opening Doors for Older People in Gloucestershire On Monday the 6 th of October The Monday Club held a coffee morning at Kimbrose to raise money for the Macmillan cancer research charity. Cakes and other treats were on offer and they raised A warm thank you to all the members who attended and contributed to this event! 7
