There are courses for : Defenders, Midfielders and Attackers
Role Specific Courses Course Pre-requisites Candidates must hold UEFA B Licence Duration 3 days (21.5 GLH) Successful Completion Attendance only
QUESTIONS? UEFA Study Group Schem
Q: What conditions / requirements do youth coaches have to meet in order for club to satisfy club licensing regulations?: Ans: At present coaches must hold UEFA B Licence but discussions underway to change MANDATORY qualification to FA Youth Award. The Elite Coaching Forum is the discussion group for this and consists of members from: The FA, LMA, PFA, PFCA, Premier League and Football League. Proposed start date Jan Academy / Centre of Excellence Manager must have UEFA A. C
Q: What challenges do you have to integrate your messages into the professional clubs?: Ans: The coaching workforce are very positive but there are some political / logistical issues around mandatory qualifications for coaches of senior players. The Football League have just submitted a discussion document for a phased inclusion of mandatory qualifications throughout the leagues so progress is being made. There are mandatory qualifications in the Premier League although exceptions are made to allow appointed coaches time to complete their qualifications. N
Q: How many candidates per year can access UEFA B and UEFA A? Ans: Potentially 720 candidates at UEFA B and at UEFA A. We run up to 30 UEFA B courses with 24 candidates per course and 3-4 UEFA A Licence courses with 30 candidates per course. F
Q: How important politically is your inclusion programme and do you have specific courses for female coaches? Ans: Football is the nation s favourite game and as such we go to great lengths to ensure all areas of society are provided with opportunities to participate at an appropriate level. As a social tool football has great power and can be / is used to help drive / support programmes around eg: obesity, learning, social inclusion. We have run discreet female only courses and also have a female coach mentoring programme. Julie Chipchase was first female UEFA A Instructor August N / F
Q: What is the status of Youth Coaches compared with senior coaches? Ans: This is a serious problem as they receive little recognition, low pay, limited job security and so look to progress through the age groups in order to secure better terms and conditions. We would like coaches to be seen as experts within their domain much as school teachers are seen to be. The development of our new FA Youth Award and ongoing FA Youth Award (Advanced) linked to mandatory qualifications and club licensing regulations may start to address this. C
Q: The game as the teacher and learning through playing came across as important. Why this focus and what are your findings so far? Ans: We have tried to move away from a process of education perceived by some as very autocratic and limiting. In reality the ages and stages of development of the players and the coaches function will influence their choice of coaching methodology and interventions. There is a continuum within which the emphasis will shift consistently. Some coaches DO NOT UNDERSTAND and think the practice alone will solve all the problems. N / C
Q: Training sessions tutors and candidates, who does what at each level? Ans: At all levels there are a mixture of candidate and tutor delivered sessions. The tutors will deliver coach education sessions including organisation, reasons for actions taken, technical detail etc and player sessions as these have a different flow / tempo which the candidates need to see. The candidates deliver small group / individual sessions, some formally assessed, some not. At UEFA A level the formal candidate sessions are filmed and utilised with contemporaneous notes to review the sessions. F
Q: UEFA course durations are relatively short when compared to some other associations, would you consider closing the gap? What is the current balance of your theory / practical elements? Ans: It is difficult to increase the hours due to social constraints but the inclusion of a foreign language component is something I am keen to see happen. We try to adhere to a 60% practical -40% theory split but from experience TIME ON THE GRASS with informed feedback is what our coaches need. F / N
Q: What is the competition structure for elite youth teams? Ans: We have Academy and Centres of Excellence Football, differentiated by resources and facilities and this is currently under review. They recruit from U/9 to U/13 within 1 hour, U/14-U/16 within 1.5 hours. There are formal leagues where they may only play other clubs within the same category and then selected dates for festivals, inter category football and tournaments. For full time scholars there are U/16 and U/18 leagues and various cup competitions which are basically national competitions but with regional qualifiers. C
Q: Do you utilise distance learning / e-learning during the courses? Ans: Most courses have formally assessed distance learning tasks and coaching log compilation. These must be produced, reviewed and signed off by the course tutors. A candidate cannot pass a course without completion of these elements and will be asked to re-submit them if sub-standard. Many templates can be accessed on line and candidates at the higher levels have a FAN number which allows them to access course materials / presentations. We have a number of on-line courses eg: referee and psychology and we use conference calls on the UEFA Pro Licence. F
Q: Who worked on the future game developments and what are your experiences of the paradigm shift in coach education? Ans: We held 8 consultation events in grass roots called Your game, your say and 6 consultation events with professional clubs and coaches. We analysed data from our national teams, major tournaments, major leagues and have hopefully redefined the DNA of English football. There has been an almost universal approval of the principles but the application of change always meets with some resistance. N
Q: When do coaches cover first aid, who delivers it, how? Ans: There is an FA Emergency Aid course and many of the itinerant physiotherapists we use for teams and events are tutors for this course. Coaches pick it up around Level 1 or Level 2 and must keep updating it every 3 years. We are implementing a process of licensed coaches and as we go forward it has been proposed that keeping it valid should only be a requirement at specified levels. F
