1 Inclusive Golf Coaching Sam Carr PGA Regional Coaching Development Officer 5/31/2012 1

2 Needs led Recognised some of the skills and knowledge needed to deliver coaching to disabled performers was different to non-disabled performers (though much was the same) Recognised an increase interest in learning to play golf from special schools and community groups Recognised that our workforce felt inadequately prepared to deal with this need Targeted and needs led CPD that addressed all other areas of coach development APART FROM disability 5/31/2012 2

3 Learner centred approach Must not assume people absorb information merely by attending a workshop learning cannot be done by osmosis! Decontextualised knowledge has less value to coaches Classroom based activities can be ineffective in stimulating learning learning is maximised when the period between adoption of theory and practical application are minimised Any practical opportunities included in the workshop needed to reflect 5/31/2012 3

4 Where to start! Soon became obvious that this was a huge area of work Would need a comprehensive series of workshops in order to maximise impact costly and time consuming Consulted Sports Coach UK and Notts Disability Sports Officer who had previously done some disability training on our behalf the additional support and expertise were invaluable There is little research in this area and what there is tends to focus on school settings Began to look at the inclusive coaching workshop for ideas 5/31/2012 4

5 Inclusive coaching workshop outcomes Reflect on past experiences and recognise and share best practice Make appropriate modifications, adaptations and progressions to a planned session to include all participants Identify the basic elements of classification in relation to disability sport 5/31/2012 5

6 (DIS)ABILITY Assess the needs and wants of the individual as you would with a non-disabled performer Focus on what the performer CAN do Although it is crucial to have information about the persons disability, look past the disability to see the person 5/31/2012 6

18 Putting it into practice Role out of initial series of workshops underway Tutors are currently co-delivering best practice Less experienced tutors have been paired with more experienced tutors Less experienced disability coaches have been paired with more experienced disability coaches 5/31/

19 Measuring impact through monitoring and evaluation Post workshop delegate questionnaire followed up with qualitative telephone interviews Post workshop participant questionnaire Demonstrate impact to funders and sponsor to secure future funding Provide direction for future work impairment specific 5/31/
