3 Course Instructors Course Administrator (and instructor) Joanne Byron LPN, BSNH, CPC, CPC-I, CHA, CMC, MCMC, PCS. Joanne has hospital and outpatient coding experience. She is the main developer of this course and oversees this program as an instructor. Instructors Karen Drummond, CPC, CPC-I, CPC-H, PCS, FCS, CMC, ACS-RA, AC-BO/GYN, CMBS-I Ms. Drummond brings 20 years of experience and nine coding and billing certifications: CPC-I, CPC, CPC-H, PCS, FCS, CMC, ACS-RA, ACS-OB/GYN and CMBS-I. She serves on the national board of Advanced Coding Specialists in Radiology and OB/GYN. Karen is a past presenter for the American Academy of Professional Coders and has worked locally and nationally educating physicians and their staffs on documentation guidelines and coding concepts. She is also, an American Academy of Professional Coders approved PMCC instructor, who has taught medical billing and coding at Stark State College, Canton City Schools Adult Education, and Portage Lakes Career Center in Ohio. Currently she is teaching several coding on-line courses. Karen has worked for two large hospitals teaching the residency program documentation guidelines. She is currently working for Health Management Resources which is a consulting firm in Salisbury, North Carolina providing audits and education for compliance to providers across the country. 4 Carol Penninger, CPC Ms. Penninger has been a passionate teacher, and student advocate, for the past 20 years. Her foundational approach empowers students to become successful learners. She has been involved in healthcare billing, coding, reimbursement and compliance consulting for over 15 years. She is a member of the American Academy of Professional Coders, and a certified coder, since Carol specialists in clinical and administrative staff training in areas of reimbursement, documentation and coding, and providing critical knowledge of regulatory and reimbursement requirements in addition to OIG CIA projects requiring high-level compliance expertise. For the past 3 years, she has been a Senior Consultant/Auditor for Health Management Resources, Inc, a national consulting firm based in Salisbury, NC. She assists hospitals, by identifying areas of missed OPPS revenue opportunity; auditing billing of outpatient services, identifying causes of improper billing, and providing education to improve both reimbursement and compliance. She is also a Senior Associate of HMR s AuditGuard team, which provides proactive auditing and education; protecting both physician and hospital-owned healthcare practices from RAC, OIG, MIC, and all other payor recovery audit programs. Erin F. Baxter, CMC Ms. Baxter has been working in the healthcare field since She has experience in medical billing, coding and collections for pediatrics, podiatry and outpatient services. She completed her medical terminology, Anatomy & Physiology, Cellular Bio-Chemistry and Microbiology as well as multiple Psychology courses at Cuyahoga Community College. She also obtained her Certified Medical Collector (CMC) certification through The American Institute of Healthcare Compliance (AIHC). Your tutor/instructor will contact you at least once a week and be available for questions Monday-Friday by phone or from participants. Weekend availability must be arranged in advance. Instructors will review grading and contact participants regarding what was missed and review material to support the study process, acting as a tutor throughout the program. 5 Cost: $850 Tuition must be paid before the program begins which is $850 and includes course text books and personal instructor. Financing Available You may be eligible for financing at only 4.99% interest. A down payment of $250 is required to cover costs of books and initial tuition the balance is eligible for financing. Information below is an overview of the basic assignment for each lesson. One lesson should be completed before you begin the next lesson. 6 Learning Objectives The objective of this course is to bring your skills to an optimal level to prepare you for ICD-10. ICD-10 requires more medical information and details to assign an appropriate code. We use current ICD-9-CM guidelines, exercises and Volumes I & II coding books in addition to the anatomy charts and advanced medical terminology texts for this course. Basic Word Structure Review (dusting off the cob-webs and getting back into the grove ) Organization of the Body & Anatomy Etiology of Disease learning common conditions, diseases for each body/organ system Advanced Terminology your text book is on a nursing level, providing optimum training for you as a coder Medical Specialists & Case Reports Abbreviations & Symbols Body systems diseases, common diagnostic tests used to determine a definitive diagnosis & medical/surgical interventions Diagnostic Tests & Procedures Diagnosis coding applications & exercises ICD9 Guidelines & Detailed Coding Skills Introduction to ICD 10 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) 24 CEUs are awarded to those successfully completing this program in a timely manner through American Academy of Professional Coders. 8 Program Policy, Refunds, Requirements Program Policy All courses MUST be completed within 12 months from time of registration. Studying on your own time, whatever is best for you! However, you must complete assignments timely and stay in touch with your instructor. Lack of weekly contact with your instructor can constitute discharge from the program. The course is pass/fail, although assignments may be graded on a percent correct basis. Refunds Please see our refund policy on our web site. Text books are included in tuition and this cost can not be refunded once texts are ordered. The first month s instructor s pay cannot be refunded. Refunds will only be considered if requested prior or during lesson. Please talk with your instructor prior before deciding to drop the course.
