2 I N T R O D U C T I O N Smoothies are possibly the ultimate drink for an immediate energy boost. They are easy to make and can transform fresh fruit and vegetables into healthy drinks packed full of goodness. In their simplest form they are cool fresh fruit purées or you can add yogurt as a healthy thickener or even ice cream or alcohol for superb tasting treats. The Kenwood Smoothie Maker is all you need to whizz up a tasty smoothie, which can be dispensed directly into your glass. This booklet contains a selection of recipes for you to try, from healthy fruit smoothies and vegetable smoothies, yogurt and milk smoothies to adult only smoothies. You may also wish to experiment and make your own varieties. Whichever you choose read the hints and tips below, before you start, to ensure the best results. S M O OT H I E H I N T S A N D T I P S Follow the instructions supplied with your Kenwood Smoothie Maker to assemble it and clean it after use. Always make sure the tap is closed before adding ingredients and the lid is secured in place before switching on to blend the ingredients. Add liquids such as fruit juices, milk, yogurt and mineral water to the goblet first, then add fruits or vegetables and finally ice or frozen ingredients. Smoothies taste best served well chilled. To achieve the optimum result make sure fruits, vegetables, juices and dairy products are well chilled before adding. If not serve the finished smoothie over ice cubes. The desired thickness for a smoothie is very much a personal choice. Add a little chilled mineral water or milk if the smoothie is too thick. If the fruit is sweet and ripe you should not need any extra sweetness, but you can always add a spoonful of honey or a dash of sugar to sweeten if necessary. Dispense drinks by pressing the MIX button and pressing down on the dispensing tap lever, making sure your glass is under the tap. Switch off and release the tap when the glass is full. If you leave smoothies to stand the ingredients may separate into layers, this however does not affect the flavour, they will still taste delicious, just stir before drinking. To get the most benefit form the nutrients present in the fresh fruit and vegetables drink them as soon as possible after preparing.

3 I C E D ST R AW B E R R Y S E N S AT I O N 200ml apple juice, chilled 250g fresh strawberries, hulled and halved, if large 350g Cantaloupe melon, seeded, peeled and cut into chunks 8 ice cubes 15ml spoon clear honey or icing sugar, to sweeten, optional S E R V E S 3 1 Pour the apple juice into the goblet. Add the strawberries, chunks of melon and ice cubes. 2 Blend on MIX for 10 seconds then on SMOOTH for 30 seconds. Check to see if the sweetness is to your liking. If wished add the honey or icing sugar and switch to MIX for 10 seconds, then serve in chilled glasses. Illustrated opposite M A N G O, P I N E A P P L E A N D PA S S I O N J U I C E S M O OT H I E 300ml freshly squeezed orange juice, chilled 1 ripe chilled mango, peeled, stoned and chopped ¼ pineapple, peeled, cored and chopped 1 passion fruit, halved S E R V E S 2 Illustrated opposite 1 Place the orange juice into the goblet. Add the mango, pineapple and passion fruit pulp. 2 Switch the Smoothie Maker on to MIX for 15 seconds then to SMOOTH for 20 seconds. Serve in chilled glasses. PA PAYA A N D P E A C H N E C TA R S E R V E S 4 400ml grapefruit juice, chilled 1 large papaya, peeled, halved and deseeded and chopped 410g can peach slices in fruit juice, drained Chilled mineral water, optional 1 Pour the grapefruit juice in the goblet. Add the papaya and peach slices. 2 Blend on MIX for 10 seconds then on SMOOTH for 25 seconds. If too thick add a little chilled mineral water. Serve in chilled glasses. 5 M A N D A R I N A N D A P R I COT S M O OT H I E 300ml white grape juice, chilled 75g ready to eat dried apricots, chopped 420g can mandarin oranges in fruit juice, drained S E R V E S 3 1 Roughly chop the apricots and place in a bowl. Pour over the grape juice, cover and chill for 2 hours, or overnight if preferred. Place in the goblet and add the mandarin segments. 2 Switch the Smoothie Maker on to MIX for 15 seconds then on SMOOTH for 30 seconds. Serve in chilled glasses. WAT E R M E LO N CO C K TA I L 200ml red orange juice, chilled ¼ watermelon about 450g flesh mint sprigs, to garnish S E R V E S 2-3 Illustrated opposite 1 Pour the orange juice into the goblet. Remove the seeds from the watermelon and chop the flesh. Add to the goblet. 2 Blend on MIX for 10 seconds then on SMOOTH for 20 seconds. Serve in chilled glasses garnished with mint sprigs. 6 B E R R Y S M O OT H I E 300ml pure cranberry juice sweetened with grape and apple, chilled 100ml apple juice, chilled 250g fresh raspberries 125g fresh blackberries raspberries to decorate, optional S E R V E S 4 1 Pour the cranberry juice and apple juice in to the goblet. Add the strawberries and blackberries. 2 Blend on MIX for 15 seconds then on SMOOTH for 30 seconds. Check to see if the sweetness is to your liking. Serve immediately in chilled glasses topped with raspberries, if wished. F R U I T S M O O T H I E S P A G E 5

7 M I N T E D L A S S I CO O L E R 300ml natural wholemilk yogurt, chilled ½ cucumber, peeled, deseeded and chopped 8 mint leaves 4 ice cubes 2 mint sprigs, to garnish S E R V E S 2 1 Place the yogurt in the goblet. Add the cucumber, mint leaves and ice cubes. 2 Switch the Smoothie Maker to MIX for 10 seconds then SMOOTH for 30 seconds. Serve immediately garnished with sprigs of mint. AV O C A D O S M O OT H I E 400ml white grape juice, chilled 1 avocado, stoned, peeled and chopped 1 ripe pear, peeled, cored and chopped juice of 1 lemon few drops Tabasco, optional S E R V E S 2 1 Place the grape juice in the goblet. Add the avocado and pear. Pare the zest from the lemon and set aside for garnish. Squeeze the juice from the lemon into the goblet and add the Tabasco, if using. 2 Blend on MIX for 10 seconds then on SMOOTH for 20 seconds. Serve immediately garnished with lemon zest. B E E T R O OT B U Z Z S E R V E S 2 200ml apple juice, chilled 100ml freshly squeezed orange juice, chilled 100g cooked fresh baby beetroot, halved 5cm piece fresh root ginger, peeled and grated 3 baby carrots, grated celery leaves, to garnish 1 Place the apple juice and orange juice in the goblet. Add the beetroot, ginger and carrots. 2 Blend on MIX for 10 seconds then on SMOOTH for 30 seconds. Serve immediately garnished with celery leaves. V E G E T A B L E S M O O T H I E S P A G E 6

9 N U T T Y B A N A N A B O O ST 450ml low fat hazelnut yogurt, chilled 300ml milk, chilled 3 ready to eat dried sweetened peaches, chopped 2 bananas, peeled S E R V E S 4 1 Place the hazelnut yogurt, milk and chopped peaches in the goblet. Slice the bananas and add to the goblet. 2 Switch the Smoothie Maker to MIX for 15 seconds then to SMOOTH for 30 seconds. Serve immediately. R U B Y G R A P E F R U I T O AT I E 350ml ruby grapefruit juice, chilled 200ml natural wholemilk yogurt, chilled 2 x 15ml spoons clear honey 2 x 15ml spoons porridge oats 1 banana, peeled and cut into chunks S E R V E S 2 1 Pour the grapefruit juice into the goblet. Add the yogurt, honey, oats and banana chunks. 2 Switch the Smoothie Maker to MIX for 10 seconds, then to SMOOTH for 30 seconds. Serve immediately in tall glasses. 10 R A S P B E R R Y A N D P E A R S W I R L 300ml low fat raspberry yogurt 150ml low fat natural yogurt 100ml milk 100g frozen raspberries 2 ripe pears, peeled, cored and chopped S E R V E S 4 1 Place the raspberry yogurt in the goblet. Reserve about a third of the natural yogurt and add the remainder to the goblet. Add the milk, frozen raspberries and pears. 2 Blend on MIX for 10 seconds then on SMOOTH for 20 seconds. 11 VA N I L L A A N D M A P L E S M O OT H I E 500ml natural wholemilk bio yogurt, chilled 50ml maple syrup 100ml apple juice, chilled 2.5ml vanilla essence S E R V E S 2-3 Illustrated opposite 1 Place the bio yogurt, maple syrup and apple juice in the goblet. Add the vanilla essence. 2 Blend on MIX for 10 seconds then on SMOOTH for 20 seconds. Pour into serving glasses and serve. PA S S I O N AT E P E A C H S M O OT H I E 200ml semi-skimmed milk, chilled 500g peach and passion fruit fromage frais, chilled 1 peach, halved, stoned and cut into pieces 1 passion fruit, halved S E R V E S Place the milk, fromage frais and peach in the goblet. Blend on MIX for 10 seconds then on SMOOTH for 20 seconds. 2 Add the passion fruit pulp and blend on MIX for 5 seconds or transfer the smoothie into serving glasses and serve topped with the passion fruit pulp. B L A C K B E R R Y A N D A P P L E S M O OT H I E S E R V E S 2 Illustrated opposite 200ml apple juice, chilled 200g Greek yogurt, chilled 15ml clear honey 250g fresh blackberries extra blackberries and yogurt to serve, optional 1 Place the apple juice, yogurt, honey and blackberries in the goblet. Blend on MIX for 10 seconds then on SMOOTH for 15 seconds. 2 Place a spoonful of yogurt in the base of 2 serving glasses and add a few blackberries then add the smoothie and serve. 13 B L A C K F O R E ST S H A K E 300ml milk, chilled 350ml black cherry bio yogurt, chilled 4 scoops chocolate ice cream 75ml kirsch, optional grated chocolate, to decorate S E R V E S 2 1 Place the milk and black cherry yogurt in the goblet. Add the scoops of ice cream and kirsch if using. 2 Switch the Smoothie Maker to MIX for 10 seconds, then SMOOTH for 20 seconds. Serve immediately in chilled glasses, topped with a little grated chocolate. Illustrated opposite E A ST E R N P R O M I S E S M O OT H I E 200ml pineapple juice, chilled 1 lime 425g can lychees, drained 4 scoops vanilla ice cream S E R V E S 2 1 Place the pineapple juice in the goblet. Remove the lime zest and set aside. Cut the lime in half and squeeze the juice into the goblet. Add the lychees and ice cream. 2 Switch the Smoothie Maker to MIX for 10 seconds, then SMOOTH for 20 seconds. Serve immediately, topped with the reserved lime zest. 14 B L U E B E R R Y F O O L 200ml fresh custard, chilled 200ml milk, chilled 250g blueberries, chilled 2 scoops vanilla ice cream extra blueberries, to decorate, optional S E R V E S Place the custard, milk and blueberries in the goblet. Add the scoops of ice cream. 2 Switch the Smoothie Maker to MIX for 10 seconds, then SMOOTH for 20 seconds. Serve immediately, topped with a few fresh blueberries, if wished. 15 ST R AW B E R R Y A N D O R A N G E B L U S H 300ml milk, chilled 300ml orange yogurt, chilled 175g strawberries, hulled and halved, if large 4 scoops strawberry ice cream extra strawberries, to decorate S E R V E S 4 1 Place the milk and orange yogurt in the goblet. Add the fresh strawberries and strawberry ice cream. 2 Switch the Smoothie Maker to MIX for 10 seconds, then SMOOTH for 20 seconds. Serve immediately in chilled glasses, decorated with strawberries. Y O G U R T I C E S M O OT H I E 200ml freshly squeezed orange juice, chilled 100ml milk, chilled 100g Greek yogurt, chilled 2 ripe peaches, halved, stoned and sliced 4 scoops yellow fruit yogurt ice cream (peach and apricot) ice cubes, to serve S E R V E S 2 1 Place the orange juice, milk and yogurt in the goblet. Add the peaches and yogurt ice cream. 2 Switch the Smoothie Maker to MIX for 15 seconds, then SMOOTH for 30 seconds. Serve in chilled glasses adding a couple of ice cubes to each glass. P U R P L E C R E A M S E R V E S 4 450ml blackcurrant bio yogurt, chilled 100ml purple grape juice, chilled 50ml blackcurrant fruit syrup or cassis 2 dark red or purple plums, halved, stoned and sliced 6 scoops Cornish dairy or clotted cream ice cream 1 Place the yogurt, grape juice and blackcurrant fruit syrup or cassis in the goblet. Add the plums and scoops of ice cream. 2 Blend on MIX for 15 seconds, then on SMOOTH for 30 seconds. Serve immediately. P A G E 1 4 I C E C R E A M S M O O T H I E S

17 T R O P I C A L V O D K A S M O OT H I E 200ml coconut milk 150ml low fat natural yogurt, chilled 100ml pineapple juice, chilled 100ml vodka 1 lime 2 x 15ml spoons icing sugar ½ pineapple, peeled, cored and chopped 6 ice cubes S E R V E S 4 1 Place the coconut milk, yogurt, pineapple juice and vodka in the goblet. Pare the lime zest using a zester and set aside. Cut the lime in half, squeeze the juice from the lime and scrape out the pulp into the goblet. Add the icing sugar, pineapple and ice cubes. 2 Blend on MIX for 10 seconds then on SMOOTH for 30 seconds. Serve decorated with lime zest. G R E N A D I N E S M O OT H I E 500ml wholemilk yogurt, chilled 200ml grenadine alcoholic cordial 100ml pomegranate juice drink, chilled 2 x 5ml spoons natural essence of rosewater 5 ice cubes pomegranate seeds to serve, optional S E R V E S 4 1 Place the yogurt, grenadine, pomegranate juice and rosewater essence in the goblet. Add the ice cubes. 2 Blend on MIX for 10 seconds then on SMOOTH for 30 seconds. Serve in chilled glasses. 18 L E M O N A N D E L D E R F LO W E R R E V I V E R 200ml sparkling water, chilled 100ml gin 50ml elderflower cordial ¼ galia melon, skinned, deseeded and chopped 4 scoops lemon sorbet S E R V E S 3 1 Place the sparkling water, gin and elderflower cordial in the goblet. Add the melon and scoops of lemon sorbet. 2 Blend on MIX for 10 seconds then on SMOOTH for 20 seconds. Serve immediately in chilled glasses. 19 S U M M E R F R U I T C R U S H 300ml cranberry juice 75ml cherry brandy 200g frozen summer fruits S E R V E S 4 1 Place the cranberry juice and cherry brandy in the goblet. Add the frozen summer fruits. 2 Blend on MIX for 10 seconds then on SMOOTH for 30 seconds. Serve immediately. G I N G E R A N D C H O CO L AT E S M O OT H I E 200ml milk, chilled 100ml ginger wine 4 scoops dark chocolate ice cream drinking chocolate, for sprinkling S E R V E S 2 1 Place the milk and ginger wine in the goblet. Add the scoops of ice cream. 2 Blend on MIX for 10 seconds then on SMOOTH for 20 seconds. Serve in chilled glasses, sprinkled with drinking chocolate. C A F É F R A I C H E CO C K TA I L S E R V E S 3-4 Illustrated opposite 200ml strong black coffee, chilled 150ml condensed milk 2 x 5ml spoons brown sugar 50ml brandy 100ml crème fraîche freshly grated nutmeg, for sprinkling 1 Place the coffee, condensed milk, sugar and brandy in the goblet and blend on MIX for 10 seconds. 2 Add the crème fraîche and blend on MIX for 10 seconds then on SMOOTH for 10 seconds.
