1 Dear Parents, Guardians and Families, 1/2 Newsletter Term 4, Welcome to Term 4! We invite you to read this newsletter and familiarise yourself with our learning focuses across all curriculum areas, important information and key dates for the term. As always, we have a very exciting term ahead! 2 TENNIS HOT SHOTS is on Thursday and students are encouraged to wear their tennis Hot Shots T-Shirts on Thursdays. Additional informatin can be sought from the official Hot Shots website: HATS AND DRINK BOTTLES Please remind your child to wear his/her hat for Term 4. Students without hats will be required to play inside the Peppercorn Building at Recess and Lunch. Remember it s No hat, No Play! Please remind your child to bring a drink bottle each day, especially on P.E. days. INTEGRATED CURRICULUM UNIT Integrated Curriculum Units engage students by learning new concepts and skills, which are transferrable to other areas of learning, alongside developing explicit literacy skills. During weeks 1-5 of term 4, students will be continuing with their Science-based focus on Habitats and Animal Adaptations. The details of the Integrated Curriculum Unit include: Integrated Topic: Science Key Understandings: Animals adapt to their habitats. Concepts Learning Experiences Throughout the Unit Cause and effect- Why is it like it is? Connection - how is it connected to other things? Find out what a habitat is. Investigating the different type of habitats. Explore what different habitats provide. Discover animal adaptations. Write an explanation on an animal and its habitat. LITERACY The literacy program will cover a range of reading comprehension strategies, text types, speaking and listening skills and spelling, grammar and punctuation investigations. These include: Reading Q.A.R- Question and Answer Relationship Nonfiction texts features such as captions, glossaries, photographs, labels Identifying Cause and Effect text structure Comprehension Strategies that will be learnt include Inferring, Predicting, Questioning, Identifying the Main Idea, Making Connections and Summarising. Reader s Theatre Read and Retell Spelling Personal Words: students use strategies to learn individual personal words each week. Words are chosen from these areas: From incorrectly spelled words from the Oxford Word List Plus words Writing Genres Recounts, Persuasive and Explanation texts Writer s Notebook Quick Writes (writing from a photo stimulus) Using Cause and Effect text structure and signal words The Writing Process - Planning, Drafting, Revising, Editing and Publishing Speaking and Listening Sharing of written responses Demonstrating School Values and Bucket Filling behaviour Reader s Theatre Observation of Speaking and Listening in Drama

3 From student s own writing From weekly spelling investigations Whole class spelling investigations: students will spend time exploring spelling patterns and how they are used in different words Handwriting MATHEMATICS The mathematics program will cover a range of topics. These will include: Number and Algebra Measurement and Geometry Statistics and Probability Multiplication and Division Time (Clocks) Chance and Probability Fractions Revision of Money Vocabulary Vocabulary Groups of, multiple, multiply, multiplication, equal groups, repeated, addition, add, number sentence, skip counting, divided by, equal share, shared between, Clock, hands, o clock, hour, analogue, digital, face, hour hand, minute hand, half an hour, calendar, clockwise, anti-clockwise, quarter past, quarter to, second. Chance, probability, certain, likely, unlikely, impossible, outcome, predict, results, 50/50, combinations, equal chance. halves, quarters, eighths, equal Problem Solving Strategies: Draw a Diagram, Make a Table, Act It Out. Resilience and Wellbeing: Conflict and Resolution This program teaches resilience and social skills through engaging and cooperative activities. It assists students to understand and appreciate the school values. We anticipate that the understandings students gain will help facilitate positive interactions with all members of the school community. Our units are linked to the concepts taught in the Integrated Curriculum and we will complete a session every third week. The topics for investigation during Term 4 will include: Conflict Resolution Dealing with change HOMEWORK As per Term 3, Grade 1/2 students are expected to complete 15 minutes of Homework per night. This will consist of: 10 minutes of reading of a Just Right Book. Please fill out Home Reading Log (Homework Sheet). 5 minutes of spelling activities on personal words. Please see the Spelling Activity Matrix on the inside cover of your child s homework book. Optional Mathletics Tasks and Reading Eggs login usernames and passwords are glued into homework books. Homework is given out on Mondays and due on Fridays. Homework is given to students every Monday and is due on Friday for review and feedback. HOMEWORK CLUB Homework Club is held on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons from 3.30pm. If you would like your child to participate, you can book through the online booking system. Please contact the office for more information. Homework club will resume in week 2.

4 LEAVING/ABSENT NOTES If your child leaves school early you are required to fill out an early dismissal form from the office and give it to your child s teacher. We understand that children are sometimes absent from school due to illness or other circumstances. If this is the case, please notify the school by phone or by writing a short note to the classroom teacher. LATE NOTES Please ensure your child arrives at school on time (8.55am). If they are late, they are required to report to the office and will be given a late pass to take to their teacher. Music with Alison Handley handley.alison.m@edumail.vic.gov.au After a very busy first few weeks preparing for our performances at the Big Day Out where we will performing a range of culturally diverse songs and demonstrating our increasing awareness of pitch and rhythm, term 4 will be focussed on a study of the music of Tchaikovsky s ballet The Nutcracker, using this as a basis for listening activities, making cultural connections, dance, character study, musical terminology and instrument study. We will continue playing our music games to reinforce our learning as well as introducing new songs and activities (such as making a musical map of the school) to support the Grade 1/2 integrated study of geography and welcome the festive season Physical Education with Joe Diamond diamond.joseph.j@edumail.vic.gov.au During term 4, students have realized basic motor skills and formed them into refined body functions such as: Running, Hitting, Throwing, and Catching. At this stage Gr. 1/2 students are being exposed to actual sport skills and development through the use of specific components from various sports such as: Soccer (eye-foot co-ordination)- Tennis ( hand-eye co-ordination)- Cricket/ A.F.L- (hand-eye-foot co-ordination). This Semester students will be introduced to a wider variety sports including: Tee-ball, Basket-ball and Athletics, as well as the on-going Tennis program. To enhance their fitness and physical development students are challenged with continually upgraded and monitored P.E programs.

5 LOTE Program - Chinese Mandarin with Hannah Gan gan.suk.han.s@edumail.vic.gov.au This term, students continue to learn Chinese through AIM method, which includes the use of gestures, the rule of Chinese only in class and a focus on verbs and sentence structures. While focusing on oral skills, students will also learn the eight basic strokes and pictographic characters, such as body parts and nature. Students will familiarise themselves with the story, Chicken Little with support from a range of resources, such as songs, raps, dance, music, drama, stories, games, video clips and handicrafts!
