41 Captain Eliot Anderson remarks at Graduation: Graduation Speech For those of you that don t know me, my name is Eliot Anderson and I have had the privilege of being the lead training captain for these men and woman for the past 21 weeks. First and foremost I need to say thank you to the families. The most important thank you I need to make is to my wife Jen and children Maddy and Keelynn. Thank you for the support and sacrifice over the past 2 ½ years and especially the past 7 months. I ll now extend that same gratitude to the family members of the staff: Mrs. Lopez, Molly, Missy, Gina, Brad, Danesa, and the children of the staff, thank you for putting up with the crazy long hours and all the extra work I have asked your spouses and significant others to give. Now for all the wives, children, moms, dads, girlfriends, boyfriends and any other family members of these 17 individuals sitting up here, Thank you. I know this journey has been extremely difficult. Your loved ones have come home physically and mentally exhausted, sore, bruised, sick, angry, sad and sometimes happy. And everyday I have asked them to put you aside and at 0800 be standing there at attention ready to give me 100% in everything we had planned that day. Well, your support is a big part of what brings us here today, so again thank you. (Have new firefighters give round of applause to families) Now everyone on this stage owes you and we will start paying back that debt first thing tomorrow. And for you new firefighters, it doesn t end with the academy. You will be asked to put aside your personal life on a daily basis and serve the citizens of Tucson in their time of need. When they call 911, they don t care if your child is sick, if you just had a fight with your boyfriend or if your truck s radiator is leaking all over the garage. All they want is for you to help solve their problem. And just like you have shown over the past 21 weeks, you will put all your personal feelings aside and do your best to take care of them. There has been a lot of talk about family lately, and you all have been told numerous times that you are now part of the TFD family. Let s talk a little bit more about that. Most families you are either born into or marry into. You can t do either one of those with the TFD family. No, for this family you must earn your way in. As you have seen first hand, it doesn t matter who you know or are related to, you must prove yourself just like everyone else has before you. You had to earn your spot on the eligibility list. You had to pass the CPAT under your own power. During the past 21 weeks you sat through 74 classroom presentations of which 36 of those had a written test the following Monday. You couldn t just pass these written tests with the normal academic standards, you had to score an 80% or better. You received 47 hands on classes covering various firefighting skills out on the drill grounds. 23 of those required you to demonstrate proficiency in a practical skills testing situation.

42 Captain Eliot Anderson remarks at Graduation: Graduation Speech You ve run up and down that tower untold times, you ve pushed yourself farther than you thought you could, you ve overcome fears, injury, illness and now, just like every other uniformed member of this department, you have earned your spot in the TFD family. Now you don t get to stop earning your position in this family. Unfortunately there have been a few individuals who forget this and are no longer TFD family members. They forgot how hard they worked to sit where you are sitting where you are right now, they forgot that everything we do on and off duty is a reflection on this family, they stopped earning their way and now they are no longer with us. Your membership in this family is earned, not married into, not born into but earned. The City of Tucson, your friends and family and all the Training Staff have invested a lot in you, so remember this and continue to earn your place here for the next 25 years. Now I would like to close with three statements you are all probably sick of hearing, but they need to be said in this public forum.
