1 MOVEABLE ALPHABET: CONSONANT DIGRAPHS (BLUE SERIES) WITH OBJECTS Material 1. Consonant digraph objects may be organized in the following groupings: 1. /th/ thumb 2. /th/ 3. /sh/ shell 4. /ch/ chick 5. /tch/ witch 6. /ck/ tack 7. /wh/ whelk 8. /ph/ phone 9. /ng/ ring 2. Two sets of moveable alphabets: one red and one black. 3. Lined paper 4. Pencils (red and lead) Presentation: - Consonant Digraphs 1. Invite the child to work with the consonant digraph objects, and the red and black moveable alphabets. 2. Show the child where the consonant digraph objects and the moveable alphabets are located on the shelf. 3. Select the container with the consonant digraph objects and the moveable alphabets and carry them to the table. 4. Place the container of objects in the upper left of the table. 5. Place the red moveable alphabet to the right of the container of objects. 6. Place the black moveable alphabet to the right of the red moveable alphabet. 7. Remove one object. Name the object: thumb. Ask the child, What is the first sound that you hear? 8. Say, Show me the letters th from the red moveable alphabet. Place the red letters th to the right of the object. 2 9. Say, Make the sounds of the rest of the word and select the black letters that represent the sounds. 10. Place the black letters to the right of the red letters. 11. Indicate the object and say the word thumb. Indicate the letters and read the word thumb. 12. Invite the child to write the word on lined paper. 13. Return the object to the container. 14. Return the letters to their appropriate compartments in the moveable alphabet boxes. 15. Return the materials to the shelf. Presentation 2: 1. The child continues through the series of consonant digraph objects: 1. /th/ thumb 2. /th/ 3. /sh/ shell 4. /ch/ chick 5. /tch/ witch 6. /ck/ tack 7. /wh/ whelk 8. /ph/ phone 9. /ng/ ring Control of Error 1. Consonant digraph pictures may be organized in the following groupings as single picture cards: 1. /th/ thick, thin, thumb 2. /th/ that, these, this 3. /sh/ shell, shin, ship 4. /ch/ chest, chick, church 5. /tch/ crutch, match, witch 6. /ck/ back, neck, tack 7. /wh/ whelk, whip, whisk 8. /ph/ pharaoh, phone, photo 9. /ng/ ring, song, wing Each grouping has one consonant digraph. Within each grouping, three different consonant digraph pictures are placed together in a container. For example, the pictures of thick, thin and thumb are placed together in a container. 2. Two sets of moveable alphabets: one red and one black 3. Lined paper 4. Pencils (red and lead) Presentation: 1. Invite the child to work with the consonant digraph objects, and the red and black moveable alphabets. 2. Show the child where the consonant digraph pictures and the moveable alphabets are located on the shelf. 3. Select the container with the consonant digraph pictures and the moveable alphabets and carry them to the table or rug. 4. Place the container of pictures in the upper left of the table or rug. 5. Place the red moveable alphabet to the right of the container. 6. Place the black moveable alphabet box to the right of the red moveable alphabet. Montessori Research and Development

5 7. Remove one picture. Name the picture (thumb). Ask the child, What is the first sound that you hear? 8. Say, Show me the letters th from the red moveable alphabet. Place the red letters th to the right of the picture. 9. Say, Make the sounds of the rest of the word and select the black letters that represent the sounds. 10. Place the black letters to the right of the red letters. 11. Indicate the picture and say the word, thumb. Indicate the letters and read the word, thumb. 12. Continue in this same manner with the remaining pictures: thick, thin. 13. Upon completion, allow the child to review the material by renaming the pictures and reading the words. 14. Invite the child to write the words on lined paper. 15. Return the pictures to the container, selecting the materials from left to right. 16. Return the letters to their appropriate compartments in the moveable alphabet boxes. 17. Return the materials to the shelf. Presentation 2: 1.
