4 SPT Worksheets The SPT Worksheets have been carefully designed to teach the most useful soundspelling patterns to your students. Each worksheet corresponds with the TSV Spelling Assessment spelling patterns. In other words, SPT Worksheet #1 Short u Sound teaches the sound-spelling pattern tested as #1 bumper on the TSV Spelling Assessment. Each of the 64 worksheets teaches each of the 64 sound-spelling patterns tested on the assessment. The Teacher Resource Page The Teacher Resource Page lists ten TSV Sound-Spelling Pattern Example Words to be given as part of the spelling pretest. Remedial spellers should include any of these example words that were misspelled on the pretest on their Personal Spelling-Vocabulary List. Use these example words to briefly explain the various markings and their significance as you write and pronounce a few on the board. For example, a blank ( ) indicates that a consonant sound (not necessarily a consonant letter, because there may be a consonant digraph such as sh that fits in the blank) must go before, e.g. ay, or after, e.g. a e, the vowel. The s on the Teacher Resource Page are given after the students self-correct their SPT Worksheets. Have the students print the sentence on binder paper, skipping lines. Say the dictation sentences out loud, repeating the words as often as is needed by the students. Correct the dictation in the same manner as the pretest with students placing a dot below each dictated letter. Have the students correct any vowel sound-spelling pattern errors on the line on top of each error in a different color pencil or pen. Each dictation includes some words with the same vowel sound, but different spellings, to require students to discriminate and problem-solve among spelling choices. The immediate feedback of self-correcting the dictation, with the teacher right there to answer questions, is powerful instruction. Make sure to constantly reinforce the valuable practice of educated spelling guessing among the sound-spellings within the same vowel sound. Use the spelling marks and blanks to guide students in their corrections. The SPT Worksheets The SPT Worksheets are arranged in numerical order, according to the sound-spelling patterns that most reading specialists recommend for effective reading and spelling instruction. Use the SPT Worksheets in numerical order. Students need to practice each of the spelling patterns that the results of the TSV Spelling Assessment indicate to be un-mastered in the sound-spelling order of the worksheets. The format of each worksheet is intentionally similar and will require no teacher assistance with directions after the first worksheet or so. Each worksheet lists the sound-spelling pattern as the title with the appropriate spelling marks and blanks. Next, the worksheet usually has a spelling sort that requires students to use pronunciation, analogous spelling patterns, and the spelling marks and blanks to categorize the sound-spelling pattern words. Finally, the worksheet ends with various activities designed to help the students practice application of the weekly soundspelling pattern in the writing context.
