1 CHRISTIAN CENTER SCHOOL Mrs. Vargas s Preschool Classroom Rules Classroom Rules: 1. We are kind and respectful to each other. 2. We raise our hand to speak. 3. We keep hands and feet to ourselves. 4. We follow directions. Discipline helps teachers to instruct, train and guide the student. Scripture reinforces the importance of discipline. Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6 The following methods are used to encourage obedience and self-discipline to the students Positive Reinforcement a. A student will be verbally acknowledged for good behavior. We want to encourage other students to follow by example. Every opportunity is exhausted to foster Godly conduct. It is always necessary to praise a student for appropriate behavior. It should never go unnoticed. b. Each time a child shows good behavior, such as walking in the halls quietly, sitting quietly during chapel, listening during class, or other types of good behavior, the child will receive encouraging words and also he/she will get a sticker. Consequences for Negative Behavior Our class uses a traffic light with the children s names posted on it. Every morning children will begin on a green light. a. If the student receives a verbal reminder about his/her negative behavior the teacher will explain to the student in private what the negative behavior is, why it is important to obey the classroom rules, and how we can make God, parents and the teacher happy with good behavior. b. If, after the verbal warning, the student keeps misbehaving, she/he will be seated for a few minutes in the thinking chair, (her/his name will be posted on yellow light) and the teacher will pray with the student asking God to help her/him correct and improve her/his behavior. Once the child has been disciplined, she/he will be allowed to earn back their place on the green light. c. If the student continues to display inappropriate behavior, a phone call to the parents will be made, and a conference with the teacher will be scheduled if necessary. (At this point the child s name will be posted on the red light).
2 d. If the misbehavior continues the child will be taken to the Principal s office and a conference with parents, teacher and the principal will be scheduled. Please Note: Notes are sent home on occasion, but never for the first offense. Negative behavior includes, but is not limited to: not following classroom rules, consistently and/or deliberately not following directions, being disrespectful of teachers, classmates or others, talking or disrupting during nap, and using inappropriate vocabulary. UNIFORMS: Students are required to wear school uniforms. The school uniform reduces competition between students and puts the emphasis on character and personality traits. Please keep one extra set of clothes in your child s back pack in case an accident happens. (This is not required to be uniform). Girls should always wear shorts under their jumper. Please see the dress code form for more information. FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT SHIRT: On the annual school schedule are the dates when the children will be wearing the Fruit of the Spirit Shirt. They might wear jeans or any kind of pants along with the shirt. We will be also wearing the shirts during our Field Trips. We as teachers are here to support you as parents, but in turn we need your support. We need to make a joint effort for everyone to have a successful year.
3 CHRISTIAN CENTER SCHOOL PRE-KINDERGARTEN POLICIES AND PROCEDURES The following policies and procedures are for the Pre-Kindergarten program. Please be sure to read them and go over them with your children as well. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. SPECIAL SUBJETS: The special subjects that your child will study this year are: Music, taught by Mr. Lam. P. E, taught by Coach Mills. Computer LAB, taught by Mrs. Chambers. The special subject teacher will be available to speak to you about their classes on Orientation Day, Back to School Night, and on an as needed basis. MUSIC: Mr. Lam will teach Music every Friday from 9:00 to 9:30 a.m. P. E: Coach Mills will teach P.E. on Mondays of each week. Please make sure your child has a proper P.E. shoes (tennis shoes) on Mondays. COMPUTER LAB: This class will be held upstairs in the computer lab and taught by the computer teacher, Mrs. Chambers. In order to help the children individually, we will divide our group in 2, the class will be taught once a week on Tuesdays beginning in February FRIDAY FOLDERS: Friday folders will be sent home at the end of each week. Children s crafts, letters, and number worksheets will be sent home for your review and enjoyment. A weekly newsletter, along with any information about the upcoming events, will also be included. We may have an occasion to have something returned in the folder, such as the lunch menu. Please promptly return any requested communications by the next school day. ATTENDANCE: a. Arrival. Class will begin at 8:30 a.m. Please be sure that your child is here prior to this time so he/she have the opportunity to get settled and be ready to begin the day on time. MORNING CARE is available in the gym from 6:30-8:00 a.m. You may take your child to the gym in the morning if you are here between 6:30-8:15 a.m. Students arriving between 8:15-8:30 should come directly to the classroom. b. Dismissal. The children need to be signed out each day. The sign-out sheet is located in the lobby. Children need to be picked up from the gym between 3:15-3:30, after this time, if you are unable to pick up your child, she/he will be placed in the afternoon extended learning center (ELC).
4 c. Tardiness. Students are considered tardy if they are not in the classroom by the 8:30 bell. Parents bringing students at 8:31 or after should stop by the front desk for a tardy pass. In order to cause the least disruptions after classes start, please drop your child at the classroom door. The assistant will be glad to help him/her to unpack and get in their seat. d. Student Attendance. The student is honored for having perfect attendance each quarter. This award is only given to students who have been at school the full day (no tardies or early dismissal). Please be aware that 3 unexcused tardies will be considered as 1 unexcused absence. Note: If your child is going to be absent, please send a note to the office or you can send me an at magda.vargas@ccmfamily.org If your child is ill, please let us know as soon as possible. We always pray for our classmates and friends when they are sick and we also like to keep the other parents informed if the illness is contagious. Your consideration in this matter is greatly appreciated. Please note the medical procedures in the Student Handbook. We also ask that our parents observe the waiting period of 24 hours from the first dose of an antibiotic before bringing their child back to school. This is the recommended waiting period that doctors suggest for a sick child. MORNING SNACK: Please send a morning snack and water each day with your child for a mid-morning break. Morning snack can be: - Fresh fruit or dry fruit (already pealed and/or cut if needed.) - Canned fruit. - Yogurt. - Crackers & cheese. - Raw vegetables (carrots, celery, baby tomatoes, etc. already pealed and/or cut if needed). A dip may be provided with the vegetables if desired. PLEASE DO NOT SEND fruit juice, jellied fruit, candy, fruit roll-ups, or puddings for morning snack. LUNCH: A hot lunch can be purchased in advance. Menu s are sent home and must be returned to school by the designated date. You can purchase the whole month or just the meals that are appealing to your child. Please do not send chocolate or other candies along with your child s lunch. Be sure to provide an extra spoon and napkin if it is needed. If you would like, you may send a box of spoons to keep at school. To avoid spills, please do not send juice/water in wide necked bottles or any glass containers. BIRTHDAY PARTIES: You are more than welcome to organize your child s birthday party in our classroom. You may bring cupcakes for snack time or organize a pizza party for lunch time. Please contact me to set time and date for your child s birthday. BATHROOM BREAKS: It is the school Policy that preschool students must be potty trained, before school begins. We understand that occasionally children will have accidents and we will be glad to assist your child. However, if accidents frequently
5 happen, a conference with Parents and Teacher will be requested. We encourage using the bathroom several times throughout the day. Please make sure your child s clothing is child friendly. Keep in mind that belts are not a required part of our uniform at this age. Hygiene is so important, we clean the toilet seats throughout the day with Lysol or Clorox wipes. We will also ensure that hands are washed before leaving the bathroom. RECESS: The two Preschool classes have a scheduled recess everyday at 11:30 on the backyard playground. The equipment is age appropriate and exclusively used for our younger students. When the weather is warmer, sandals are not the best running shoes and wood chips bother the children when they get lodged in their shoes. Please make sure that your child comes to school with the appropriate shoes for the day. We will visit the playground in cooler weather, so make sure that your child has a warm jacket, coat, hat, gloves, etc. Recess is a great time to use our running feet and we do run, tennis shoes work great for all our activities. NAPTIME: Our naptime begins at 12:30. Your child will need a mat, small crib sized blanket along with a small pillow and pillowcase. It is optional to send a small stuffed animal for your child to cuddle with. Be sure that your child s name is on all of his/her belongings. Every Friday, your child s blanket and pillowcase will be sent home to be laundered and should be returned on Monday. TOY/VIDEOS FROM HOME: The policy that works best in our classroom is no toys or videos from home. When toys come from home, the children become more possessive and aren t willing to share. It is also sad if a toy is lost. It is best to leave a toy at home or in the car for after school. If a child brings a video from home, they want to watch it and are sad when they can t. Please contact me first if your child wants to share a video. I am following a schedule that is very detailed and we do not watch videos unless they enhance a lesson. Occasionally we will watch a short video when recess can t be outside due to adverse weather conditions. SHOW AND SHARE: Each Friday we will enjoy a time of SHOW AND SHARE. Children will show a special toy/treasure from home according to the letter of the alphabet that we are learning during the week. You will be informed in each Friday Newsletter the letter that corresponds for the next week. PROGRESS REPORTS: Progress Reports are sent home on a quarterly basis (about every nine weeks) and Interims are sent home at the midpoint to keep you updated on your child s progress.
