Home Owner s Guide
PDL LexCom Home Network Congratulations on purchasing a home featuring the PDL LexCom Home Network system! The PDL LexCom Home Network provides the critical wiring infrastructure for whole house distribution of multiple telephone lines, high speed data, free-to-air and Pay TV, and VCR or DVD movies, all in a flexible, modular installation which can accommodate future changes and additions. All the cabling has been brought back to a distribution cabinet located in a central location, and patch leads are used to route the incoming telephone, data, television signals, to individual outlets around the home. This gives LexCom Home Network amazing flexibility, as connections may be made quickly, inexpensively, and without disruption to the fixed wiring within the walls. It also makes it simple to re-connect any outlet in any room to receive whichever incoming signal you require. LexCom Home Network has been designed to satisfy present and future signal demands, so only the latest, highest quality and highest capacity cabling has been installed in your home during its construction. All the outlets in your home are identical, irrespective of the device that you wish to connect. The connecting cables have been adapted to suit the device, with three types of connecting cables for telephones, computers, and TV s. These connection cables follow the devices when they are moved from the outlet in one room to another. The function of each outlet is easily defined and re-defined at the distribution cabinet. 2
The Kitchen Commonly the hub of a household, there is often a TV and radio here. A second socket can be used for a telephone or a computer. The Living Room Not only used for watching TV, but also a place to play computer games or plug in your laptop. A four socket outlet will be needed in this room. The Home Office With a Broadband connection you are on-line in a fl ash, enabling you to work effi ciently in your own home. The offi ce network is only a click away. Telephone, fax, computer, scanner and printer access from other rooms will require at least a four socket outlet. DATA TV TEL The Entrance Hall This is where the distribution centre cabinet is placed. There is an outlet with a socket for a telephone and a spare socket for future use. The Master Bedroom A telephone connection is usually a requirement in any master bedroom, but at least two sockets will be required in order to accommodate a TV or computer. The Children s Room With changing requirements as children grow. TV s and computers are often required for games as well as homework and projects. This would also demand a four outlet. 3
Patching Outlets The heart of your LexCom Home Network system is the distribution cabinet which contains within it the active modules that allow you to manage and subsequently distribute your TV, telephone and data signals to any room in your house. This cabinet may contain anywhere from 16 to 40 patchable outlets, depending on the size of the cabinet chosen and your needs. Each of these patchable outlets is connected by a high performance cable to a partnered wall outlet somewhere in your home. The outlets at either end of this cable have been clearly marked with the same number so that you can easily identify the source at the cabinet and destination at the wall. All that remains now is to patch (establish a connection) between the active module and the patchable outlets in the distribution cabinet. The LexCom Home Network system allows you to patch any signal (TV, telephone or data) to any outlet, and therefore any location in your home. This way, you can decide what function each wall outlet in your home will perform - just connect and go. If your requirements change and you need to have a different function at a wall outlet (eg replace a telephone with a computer), it s simply a matter of connecting the patch lead to a different module. 4
Patching is simply connecting a lead from one of the outlets on the right hand side of the cabinet to one of the active TV, telephone or data modules located on the left hand side. Wall Outlet Cabinet Patch Lead LCHTVP Take care when inserting and removing the lead by depressing the latch each time. There should be no need to force is removal or insertion. As far as possible, your LexCom Home Network is protected against damage from incorrect patching (eg incorrectly connecting your telephone signal to your tv). However it is recommended that you patch the outlet in the distribution cabinet prior to connecting the device at the wall outlet. 5
Television & Radio Your distribution cabinet may contain one or more television amplifier modules which can transmit all the free-to-air Analog and Digital television signals, and FM radio signals received from your antenna to any LexCom Home Network outlet in your home. This television amplifier module has six (6) outputs allowing you to simultaneously connect and use up to six televisions, digital set top boxes (STB s) and personal video recorders (PVR s), video cassette recorders (VCR s), home theatre systems and radios. It also features an AV Link input which allows you to connect satellite receivers, Pay-TV set top boxes, DVD players (and more) into your LexCom Home Network system, allowing you to watch these video signals on every television in your home. (For more information on this feature refer to the Modulator on page 8.) TV Amplifier Module LCHA110 TV Connecting Cable LCHLTVWH 6
To watch TV in a room, just identify the LexCom Home Network outlet that you wish to use (the wall outlet should b numbered), and patch the corresponding outlet in the distribution cabinet to any unused output of the television amplifier module. Next insert a TV connecting cable into the wall outlet and connect this to your antenna input of your TV. All of your houses video signals will now be available at this outlet and will be viewable on your TV set. Repeat this procedure for all other TV s. Your radios can be connected in a similar manner and will receive the FM radio transmissions from your antenna. 7
Telephone & Fax Machines Your distribution cabinet may contain one or more telephone modules which can transmit a number of incoming telephone lines to any LexCom Home Network outlets in your home*. * Note: The number of phones that can be connected at one time is dependent on the Ringer Equivalency Number (REN). Each phone will have a REN, typically printed on the plate on the underside of the phone s base. To determine your total REN for your house, simply add the REN numbers for each phone together. The total REN capacity of your house will vary by the type of phone service your telephone company provides. If you have exceeded the total REN capacity for your house, you may encounter problems with getting the phones to ring during an incoming telephone call. For additional information, contact your local telephone company. The telephone module is available in two configurations: Two (2) analog lines in, or one (1) analog line and one (1) digital ISDN line in. The outlets can be configured using the dip-switches to be connected to either of the two incoming lines. This module can also be configured to have a master outlet (for connecting a fax machine, an ADSL modem, or for privacy). Four (4) analog lines in available at all of the eight (8) outlets. This module has a Security (Mode 3) output. Telephone Module LCHT100 Telephone Module LCHT104 Telephone Connection Cord LCHLTELE02 or LCHLTELE05 8
To use a telephone or fax in a room, just identify the LexCom Home Network outlet that you wish to use (the wall outlet should be numbered), and patch the corresponding outlet in the distribution cabinet to any unused output of the telephone module. Next insert a telephone connecting cable into the wall outlet and connect the other end of the cable into your telephone or fax machine. Your telephone or fax machine should now have a dial tone, and you will be able to make and receive telephone calls and faxes. Repeat this procedure for all other devices that need to be connected to your telephone lines. 9
Computer & Internet Your distribution cabinet my contain one or more data modules, which allow you to network together up to four devices per module, at data rates of up to 100Mbps. Multiple computers, network enable printers, games consoles (eg. Sony Playstation and Microsoft Xbox), and other multimedia devices, can be connected together to exchange files, or to be connected to the internet. Your computer network can be set up by enabling your PCs Networking in the Control panel of Microsoft Windows.* *A LexCom Home Network can be connected to other networks, such as adsl broadband, by means of a connection at the patch panel. However, this may require other intermediate stages such as filters, firewalls or routers to ensure communication. This guide does not cover the planning of network interconnections. This must be done separately. Please contact your installer for more details. Data Module LCHS100 10
To use a computer in a room, just identify the LexCom Home Network outlet that you wish to use (the wall outlet should be numbered), and patch the corresponding outlet in the distribution cabinet to any unused output of the data switch module. Next insert a CAT6 rated RJ45 connecting cable into the wall outlet and connect the other end of the cable into your computer. Repeat this procedure to connect a second computer, networked printer, games consoles, or other networkable device. If you need to increase your homes data outlets capacity, additional data modules may be purchased and installed by your authorised LexCom Home Network installer. 11
Pay TV & Video Distribution Your LexCom Home Network system may have (or can be upgraded at a later date to include) a modulator for distributing Pay TV, VHS or DVD movies, or security camera signals. This will allow you to watch and control these sources at all TV s in your home. Each these sources (DVD, Pay TV etc) will be connected to the modulator via composite video and left/right audio using RCA connectors (the yellow, white and red connections respectively). A small infra red (IR) emitter will be connected from the modulator to the source (e.g. DVD player) to allow your remote control commands to be passed from other rooms in the house. The modulator is connected to the LexCom Home Network via its AV link out port to a wall outlet and is subsequently patched to the AV link input on the TV module. Modulator LCHAV1114 Infra red emitter LCHAV1114 Infra red receiver LCHIRRS 12
An IR receiver will be place in other rooms and plugged in to the TV connecting cable. For example if you point the remote for your DVD player at this receiver the signal will be sent to the room where your DVD is connected to the modulator and the command will be transmitted to the source. Take care in the placement of the IR receiver. Do not place the emitter near strong sunlight sources or Plasma and LCD TVs that emit strong radiation fields. The LED will continually illuminate if this happens and may stop all IR signals. 13
Simple Troubleshooting Telephone 1. My telephone does not ring, or I do not have a dial tone. Confirm that the number of the wall outlet that you wish to connect the phone to matches the number of the outlet in the cabinet. Ensure that the patch cord from the cabinet outlet is connected to the correct module (T100 or T104 telephone modules). 2. I have checked my connections and my phone still doesn t work. Check another phone in the house to see if it works. If no other phone works there could be a problem with the incoming service to your house. Wait a while and see if it is reconnected, or try to contact your telephone supplier using another phone (eg mobile, neighbour etc) to confirm. 3. What else could it be? Your telephone network supplier powers the telephone line and all phones connected to it. There is a limit to how much power they supply each telephone line, and you may have connected too many phones to it. Try disconnecting some phones and see if it works then. Computers and Data 1. I cannot connect to other PCs on my home network Confirm that the number of the wall outlet that you wish to connect the computer to matches the number of the outlet in the cabinet. Ensure that the patch cord from the cabinet outlet is connected to the correct module (S100 data module). 2. I want to connect my home to the internet using ADSL broadband Your home has been wired to enable you to have an internet connection at all outlets in your house. Your internet service provider is responsible for ensuring that this service is enabled and connected correctly in your house and to your modem. Your LexCom Home Network installer can then assist you in connecting and distributing this service to the rest of your home. 14
Television and Infra Red Control 1. I can not tune the TV into any channels. Confirm that the number of the wall outlet that you wish to connect the TV to matches the number of the outlet in the cabinet. Ensure that the patch cord from the cabinet outlet is connected to the correct module (A110 TV Amplifier module). 2. I have an AV Modulator and Infra Red sensors installed but the IR signal will not pass through to my source player. Check that IR Receiver is firmly plugged into the TV connection cable, and that the IR Emitter is placed correctly on IR windows of the source device (eg DVD player, Pay TV set-top-box etc). Check that the device is firmly plugged in to the AV modulator, and that the modulators output is patched through to the AV link input of the TV Amplifier module. Check that the IR Receiver is not permanently illuminated (LED sensor is always on),. If it is, move the IR Receiver away from the source of strong interference. If you are not able to solve the problem using these methods, do not try to fix it by opening the cover of the LexCom Home Network cabinet. To prevent personal injury or damage to any equipment only trained and authorised people should work at this level. Please contact your authorised LexCom Home Network installer or PDL for further assistance. 15
