1 SECTION FIRE PROTECTION WET PIPE FIRE SPRINKLER SYSTEM PART 1 - GENERAL 1.01 RELATED DOCUMENTS A. Drawings and general provisions of Contract including General and Supplementary Conditions, Division 1 Specification Sections, and the Mechanical General Requirements Section apply to work of this Section, as if repeated herein WORK INCLUDED A. A complete wet pipe automatic fire sprinkler system, including system design, connection to water main, piping, valves, fire department connections provided by Division 2 and automatic fire sprinkler heads. B. The entire facility shall be protected with a hydraulically calculated wet pipe automatic fire sprinkler system. Covered walk areas exposed to freezing shall be provided with dry pipe preaction system. C. All related piping components and supporting and anchoring provisions. D. Excavation and backfilling. E. Shop drawing preparation and submittals as hereinafter described. F. Testing, guarantees, and all other work necessary to provide a complete approved installation RELATED WORK A. All of Division l5 as applicable.

2 1.04 DESIGN REQUIREMENTS A. The design and installation shall conform to all requirements of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA 13, NFPA 15, NFPA 20 and NFPA 24) and the General Requirements of applicable sections of Uniform Building Code Standard 38-1 and 38-2 the specific requirements of the state and local Fire Prevention Bureau, and Owners insurance underwriter. B. All materials and equipment used in the installation of fire protection systems shall be listed as approved by Underwriters' Laboratories, Inc., "List of Inspected Fire Protection Equipment and Materials," or approved by other appropriate, nationally recognized testing laboratories for use in sprinkler systems, and shall be the latest design of the manufacturer. C. The hydraulic calculations and systems design shall conform to requirements of applicable sections of NFPA. Verify by actual test at the site, the available water flow rate and residual pressure. When submitting shop drawings include copies of water system test reports and all hydraulic calculations with system curves. Indicate location of water flow and pressure tests, and show these test results as a basis for the calculations. D. The automatic sprinkler system design shall be based on the following occupancies hazard classifications: Light Hazard Occupancy E. Contractor shall verify water pressure and flow rates available at site from utility company prior to start of calculations SHOP DRAWING SUBMITTALS A. Shop drawings shall include general pipe routing and sprinkler head locations. Submit hydraulic calculations and blue line prints of the working drawing for the entire system, including site piping, detailed building drawing showing building construction features, ductwork, lights, diffusers, ceiling tiles, equipment and obstructions to show that proper clearance is maintained for piping,sprinkler heads, etc. Indicate dimensional elevations and sizes of piping. Provide sufficient sectional views so pipe routing can be checked for clearances. Refer to all other contract documents to conform to the exact disposition and number sprinkler heads to be installed.

3 B. Final shop drawings shall first be submitted to all local agencies. Following their review and approval, submit to the Owner's insurance company. Following their signatured approval, the shop drawings shall be sent to the Architect's office for review. If required by any reviewing agent, or if review comments require extensive revisions, the submittal shall be revised as required and resubmitted for approval before submission to the Architect's office GENERAL INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS A. Locate sprinkler heads at center of lay-in ceiling tiles unless specifically indicated otherwise. At all other areas, center or space heads equally within modules shown on architectural reflected ceiling plans. For purposes of this section, "modules" are defined as ceiling areas outlined or divided by control joints, reveals, applied trim, structural members, or similar elements. B. Sprinkler piping shall be concealed above ceilings in all finished areas. Piping in unfinished areas may be exposed and sprinkler heads of upright or pendant type may be used as required. C. In general, sprinkler piping shall be installed at maximum height throughout the building. Offset piping as required to clear mechanical ductwork, piping, building structure, etc. D. The piping installation shall be consistent with fire codes, relative to provisions for drainage and obstruction to spray pattern. Provide necessary deflectors so that sprinkler heads will not spray onto electrical equipment. E. Sprinkler heads located 7'0" or less above finished floor elevation shall be provided with approved guards. F. If necessary, provide appropriate supporting members for piping which shall be attached to the building structure so that the load imposed by the piping will not exceed the limitations of the structure. G. Sprinkler heads located near heat producing equipment shall conform to code standards, relative to temperature ratings. H. Provide earthquake protection as required by NFPA 13 code standards.

Anchor all underground mains, tees, ells, bends, valves, with concrete thrust blocks, bolted tie rods, tie rods and pipe clamps, or a combination or rods and thrust blocks, to resist the unbalanced thrust of water pressure of 200 PSI, or 50 PSI above maximum static pressure, whichever is greater. J. Provide flexible couplings, sway bracing or hangers. Proper clearance around pipes passing through concrete construction, etc., to minimize forces on piping and prevent breakage. K. Piping shall be pitched so the entire system can be drained. All drains and test connections shall be extended to the outdoors at the nearest exterior wall, and terminate above paved surfaces in approved locations. Run piping underground if necessary. L. Provide in suitable metal cabinets, to be located adjacent to sprinkler risers, the necessary number of extra heads together with wrenches of each type required, as recommended by Uniform Building Code Standard cable. M. Piping subject to freezing temperature shall be provided with heat trace PART 2 - MATERIALS 2.01 PIPE AND FITTINGS A. Exterior underground pipe shall be Class 150 cement lined cast-iron pipe per ANSI A , UL approved. If allowed or required by local codes and authorities and the Owner's insuring agent, cement asbestos or plastic pipe and fittings may be used, provided that material, construction, and installation are in conformance with NFPA fire codes. B. Interior above ground piping shall be Schedule 10 black steel pipe with threaded fittings. Grooved piping and fittings may be used if allowed by local and state authorities and owners insuring agent. C. Exterior piping joints shall be UL approved push-on, or bell and spigot lead joints. Standard mechanical joints made in accordance with ANSI A21.11 are approved.

5 2.02 VALVES A. Valves shall be UL approved, and located and installed in conformance with Fire Department and Insurance Company requirements, 175 PSI design as specified below, listed in FM approved guide. B. Control Valves - U.L butterfly, iron body with tapped lugs, dry stem, bronze disc, bronze mounted or cast iron gate valves with bronze trim. All control valves shall be chained and locked in the open position. Locks to be fitted with breakable shanks complete with electronic tamper switch. C. Drain Valves - Angle pattern type, screwed with brass body and trimmings and iron wheel handles. D. Check Valve - Iron body, bronze swing disc and hinge. NOTE: FM - Approved wafer design valves may be used subject to local approval ALARM CHECK VALVES A. Furnish and install an approved check valve with retarding chambers, gauges, relays, etc., to operate water motor gong upon flow of water through sprinkler system; valve to be UL approved. B. Automatic alarm bell with water motor operator to ring alarm when water flows at alarm check valve. Provide water piping to water motor in accordance with code and manufacturer's recommendations POST INDICATING VALVES A. See Civil drawings FIRE DEPARTMENT CONNECTION A. See Civil drawings SPRINKLER HEADS A. Heads in finished areas shall be concealed type with white painted cover plate. Heads in unfinished areas shall be brass pendant type.

6 2.07 ALARMS A. Water Alarm - Alarm of the approved weatherproof type, to sound locally on the flow of water in each sprinkler system to which it is connected, shall be mounted on the outside, at a location approved by Architect. B. Flow Switch - Switch circuit for the automatic transmittal of an alarm to the central control and monitoring system shall be provided by Division 16, installed by this section, and arranged to be actuated by the flow of water in each system. PART 3 - TESTING 3.01 Tests to determine conformance with the specified requirements shall be performed in the presence of the Owner's representative and Local Fire Marshal. Each system shall be hydrostatically tested at 200 PSIG for a period of 2 hours, and underground piping shall be flushed in accordance with NFPA 24. Alarms and other devices shall be tested by flowing water through the inspector's test connection. When hydrostatic and alarms tests have been completed and all corrections made, the Contractor shall submit to the Architect a signed and dated certificate, similar to that specified in NFPA 13 with a request for a formal inspection. A competent representative of the sprinkler installer shall be present during the inspection. At this inspection, any or all of the required tests shall repeated as directed. Each detection device and its connection to each valve shall be tested by the application of heat. All defects shall be corrected by the Contractor at his own expense and additional tests made until it has been demonstrated that the systems comply with all contract requirements. All appliances and equipment for testing shall be furnished by the Contractor and all expenses, in connection with the tests, shall be defrayed by him After testing and flushing has been accomplished and Class 1 standpipe system has been accepted, fill entire system with water and close off valve. **END OF SECTION**
