1 AP World History Summer Assignment You will be completing 3 parts for the summer assignment a book and its assignment, a timeline, and a map. Please read the details below about each part of the summer assignment. Part 1. You will be reading ONE of the two books below. Choose which one you prefer and do the assignment associated with the book. Book Option 1: A Little History of the World by E.H. Gombrich, This is the first English translation of a book written in 1935 in German and translated into 18 languages. Thirty years later, a second German edition was published with a new final chapter. In 40 brief chapters, Gombrich relates the history of humankind from the Stone Age through World War II. In between are historic accounts of such topics as cave people and their inventions (including speech), ancient life along the Nile and in Mesopotamia and Greece, the growth of religion, the Dark Ages, the age of chivalry, the New World, and the Thirty Years' War. Much of this history is told through concise sketches of such figures as Confucius, Alexander the Great, Hannibal, Jesus Christ, Charlemagne, Leonardo da Vinci, Napoleon, and Columbus. Gombrich was asked to write a history geared to younger readers, so the book is filled with innumerable dates and facts, yet it is one to be read by adults. With 41 black-and-white woodcut illustrations and nine maps, it is a timeless and engaging narrative of the human race. You may also obtain a copy through Amazon: Assignment for A Little History of the World: For Chapters 2-40 you must note 5 specific historical facts (and not just random details) about the chapter s topic. These notes may be typed or handwritten as long as it is legible. Example: Chapter 34 French Revolution 1. King Louis XVI did not care about the Enlightenment ideas. 2. Noble landowners could do whatever they wanted and treated the peasants poorly. 3. Etc Book Option 2: History of the World in 6 Glasses by Tom Standage, A History of the World in 6 Glasses tells the story of humanity from the Stone Age to the 21st century through the lens of beer, wine, spirits, coffee, tea, and cola. Beer was first made in the Fertile Crescent and by 3000 B.C.E. was so important to Mesopotamia and Egypt that it was used to pay wages. In ancient Greece wine became the main export of her vast seaborne trade, helping spread Greek culture abroad. Spirits such as brandy and rum fueled the Age of Exploration, fortifying seamen on long voyages and oiling the pernicious slave trade. Although coffee originated in the Arab world, it stoked revolutionary thought in Europe during the Age of Reason, when coffeehouses became centers of intellectual exchange. And hundreds of years after the Chinese began drinking tea, it became especially popular in Britain, with far-reaching effects on British foreign policy. Finally, though carbonated drinks were invented in 18th-century Europe they became a 20th-century phenomenon, and Coca-Cola in particular is the leading symbol of globalization.

Each answer should sufficiently answer the topic with specific details found in the reading. Chapter 1 - Beer 1. How is the discovery of beer linked to the growth of the first civilizations? 2. What does this history of beer in the ancient world tell us about the early civilizations? 3. How did Mesopotamian geography shape its peoples view of the gods? 4. What were some of the uses of beer by ancient cultures? 5. How did the Egyptian attitude toward beer differ from that of Mesopotamia? 6. How did beer civilize man, according to Standage? 7. What is the relationship between beer and writing, commerce, and health? 8. Who built the ancient pyramids of Egypt and how were they paid? What benefit did the pyramids and their construction bring to Egyptian society? Chapter 2 - Wine 1. How did the development of large states and empires promote wine as drink of choice? 2. What role did Greek geography play in its economic development and trade? 3. How and why did wine develop into a form of a status symbol in Greece? 4. How was wine consumed? What does this tell us about the ancient Greek culture? 5. What was Plato s view of democracy? How did Plato s symposium differ from others? 6. How did the use of wine in Roman culture differ from that of ancient Greece? 7. Compare the acceptance of wine in Christianity to the Islamic view of spirits. Chapter 3 - Spirits 1. What is the origin of distilled spirits? 2. What is the connection between spirits and colonization? 3. How was the production of spirits connected to slavery? 4. In the 18th century, how did spirits help Britain have a more superior navy than France? 5. Why were spirits an important staple in Colonial America? 6. How did rum play a role in the American Revolution? 7. What were the negative effects/uses of spirits? (Use entire chapter to answer this) Chapter 4 - Coffee 1. Who did Europeans get coffee from and how did it spread to Europe? 2. Why was it so important to Europe s development that many people s beverage of choice switched from alcohol to coffee? 3. Describe coffee s effect on the global balance of power (in terms of commerce). 4. How did coffee play a pivotal role in the scientific revolution? (give lots of detail) 5. How did coffee play a pivotal role in the financial revolution? 6. How did coffee play a pivotal role in the Enlightenment and the French Revolution? (give lots of detail)

3 Chapter 5 - Tea 1. What were China s major exports during the Tang dynasty? 2. How did the consumption of tea in Europe differ from how it was consumed in China or Japan? 3. If tea arrived in Europe around the same time as when coffee did, why did it not find the immediate success that coffee had? 4. How did tea transform English society? Who were its main consumers and what were some of the new rituals that surrounded tea? 5. How was tea an integral part of the Industrial Revolution? 6. What was the connection between tea and politics? 7. What role did the British East India Company play in world history? (provide details) 8. How was tea connected to the opium trade and the Opium War of ? Chapter 6 - Coca-Cola 1. What was the origin of coke? 2. How was this beverage used medicinally and what were the additives? 3. What was the relationship of coke and World War II? 4. How was coke thought of by the communist during the Cold War? 5. What is meant by globalization in a bottle? 6. How did Coco-Cola become basically seen as an American value? How did this help and hurt Coca-Cola (and, in some ways, America itself?) Discussion Questions 1. What global processes does the reader learn about as they learn about these different beverages? 2. What does one learn about class and social structure (and religion) in studying beverages (and/or food)? 3. How do these new drinks become accepted in part through their supposed medicinal value? 4. One criticism of this book is that the author focuses too much on Europe and not on other parts of the world. Do you agree or disagree with this criticism? Which parts of the world do not receive much attention in this book? Part 2. Create a timeline for some of the major events in World History (some of the major events can be found on page 6 in this packet). Major events would be things like the fall of an empire, the start of a religion, major wars, etc. Be sure to label the events with B.C.E. (Before the Common Era, aka B.C.) or C.E. (Common Era, aka A.D.). If you cannot find the date of the event in the book readings, you may use the internet to look up the dates. A year will suffice, specific month and day is unnecessary. Also, create a code to classify the events that fall within the following time periods on your timeline: Foundations 8000 BCE 600 BCE Classical 600 BCE 600 CE Post Classical 600 CE 1450 Exploration Early Modern Modern 1900 Present Each time period needs to have at least 3 events in it. Your timeline needs to include 30 events total between all of the different time periods. You may use the AP World History Major Events Timeline list (page 6) to pick out important events to include on your timeline (or events similar to these from your reading).

4 Part 3. On a map of the world, either hand drawn or a print out of a blank map, locate and label the following regions. Also label at least 3 countries within this region. You may use the World Regions Chart to find which countries to label. There will be a TEST on the basic aspects of the world map and the major events that occurred during each time period during the first week of school. The amount of information and detail you want to provide in your map is up to you. However, please remember that there will be a test on this the first week of school. The World Regions Chart will help you begin to study for the map quiz. Your chapter notes, timeline, and Major Events list will help you study for your timeline quiz.
