1 Strategy & Design for Print & Media GRADE LEVEL 2nd and 3rd grade TIME One 1-hour-and-15-minute session. The session will require an additional 15 minutes for set-up and 10 minutes for clean-up. This lesson requires about 1 hour of preparation time for teachers (parents, volunteers). PROJECT DESCRIPTION Students discuss their relationship with God by answering questions like, What wonderful qualities has God given me? and What can God help me do better? Based on their answers, students create a collage of photos and small objects to represent their relationship with God. NOTE A 10-minute PowerPoint presentation precedes the hands-on activity, discussing how collages are used to communicate themes. LESSONS Cultural Students demonstrate their understanding of how God and God s creations relate to their everyday life. design Students learn collage techniques. They see how small pieces can be arranged into a larger composition. connection to jewish values Students explore how their own special qualities and the good things in their lives (friends, family, nature) are gifts from God. MATERIALS 6 x 9 clip boards (one per student purchased from Oriental Trading or similar supplier) magazines (pictures of sports, family, animals, nature, food, home wares, etc.) Brightly colored paper (for background of collages and writing answers to questions) Ribbon (various colors) Thin colored markers Glue sticks Scissors Printouts ( God Questions/Statements hard copy and digital files supplied) Newspaper (to cover work surfaces) OPTIONAL MATERIALS Small shells Small sticks or branches (cut into 2-3 inch pieces) Quick-drying glue HOMEWORK Three weeks prior to the activity, ask students to bring in old magazines or newspapers that contain the following categories of pictures: sports, family, animals, nature, school scenes, food, home scenes. 2 PROCESS: Teacher Preparation 1 Purchase or order 6x9 clipboards. Make sure you have a clipboard for every student. 2 Purchase or order brightly colored paper for background of collages. 3 A few days prior to the lesson, cut the brightly colored paper to 6x8 pieces that can fit on the clip boards. 4 Rip out pages from the magazines and separate the pictures into piles. Each pile should fit a different category (family, sports, nature, etc) so students can easily find the type of picture they want. The Session 1 Immediately prior to class, prepare students work stations with: Colored markers Several sheets of God-relationship questions/statements (hard copies and digital files provided) Glue sticks Scissors Quick dry glue Pre-cut brightly colored paper for collage backgrounds TEACHER TIP For this project, it is best to have 6 desks pushed together to make a large work table. Make 2-3 large work tables of 6 desks each. Cover with newspaper. 2 On another table in the classroom, organize the torn out magazine pages in piles, so students can find the type of pictures they want to cut out and arrange in their collages. 3 3 Write these questions/statements on the board before the lesson begins, so students have time to think about which question/statement will be the subject of their collage. What wonderful qualities has God given me? What can I do better with God s help? I would praise God for creating: My 11th Commandment would be: What can God help me do better? 4 Discuss with students that they will get to make their own collages that represent their relationship with God. Tell them that they will answer questions they may have discussed in class this year. 5 Show the PowerPoint TEACHER TIP Have a sample collage (unglued) prepared ahead of time. Walk them through the steps of choosing a theme and designing a collage. Reinforce the idea that their collage pictures will progress from the general to the specific from the background paper to a layer of large pictures to several smaller pictures. Show pictures (included) of finished collages. 6 Have students choose a God question/statement as their collage theme. 7 Students should cut out their question/statement. On the remaining white paper or one of the brightly colored papers, have students write brief (one sentence) answers to their God question/statement, clearly and legibly, and cut out the answer as well. Piles of pages from magazine arranged by topic (i.e. family, food, sports, nature, etc. 8 Students choose a background paper for their collage. 9 Students choose and cut out 3-4 large pictures (approximately 3 inches) that will comprise the first layer of their collage. The background pictures will demonstrate their answer to the God question/statement. 10 Students choose 3-4 smaller pictures to layer over their collage where there is blank space. Cut them out. 4 11 Ask students to make a rough draft of their collage. Ask them to plan how they will arrange their God question and answer along with the large and small pictures on their brightly background paper. Students should draft their collage before gluing their pictures on the background. 12 Ask them if their draft collage is communicating the theme they want. Encourage them to be creative. Try ripping some pieces or cutting the pictures at odd angles to make their collage more dynamic. Encourage refinement before gluing. 13 Once they have planned and refined their collage, students can glue all parts down with their glue sticks. 14 Teacher passes out clipboards. 15 Students clip their collage to their clipboard. Have them tie a bow with ribbon to make a hanger for their clipboard. Tell students the reason their collage is on a clipboard is to enable them to hang their art somewhere they can see it each day. And when they get tired of the collage, they can make a new one and hang it up easily. OPTIONAL Students shouldn t be limited to using magazine pictures. After the pictures are glued down, they can add small three-dimensional objects that have meaning to them, like small shells, sticks, flower petals or candy wrappers. Use the quick-dry glue to attach these objects to their collage. SUGGESTED DISCUSSION TOPICS Talk about your collage. How do each of the pictures relate to the God statement/question? What personal items would you add to your collage if it were bigger (e.g., a sports medal, your dog s collar, a picture from a family vacation)? What kind of relationships with God do you have in your daily life? How do you keep in touch with God? It needn t only be through prayer. You might have a relationship with God through the activities you like to do (sports, art) or through your family and friends. Questions?
