2 LET THE SILLINESS 2 COMMENCE! This pack s full of ideas to help you plan for Save the Children s Christmas Jumper Day. Some of it s silly. Some of it s serious. All of it s very useful. To get you started, here s a handy three-step guide to taking part. Photo: Kate Stanworth/Save the Children STICK ON YOUR SWEATERS (THE SILLY BIT) Get all your pupils to wear a festive woolly on Friday 16 December. There s no need for everyone to splash out on snazzy new knits just help them spruce up some old sweaters with tinsel, baubles and pompoms. 1 3 SHOUT ABOUT IT Put up loads of posters around your school, write it in the school calendar, send letters home to parents basically do whatever it takes to make sure everyone knows that Friday 16 December is Save the Children s Christmas Jumper Day. Can t do 16 December? Don t worry just pick a date that suits you. DONATE (THE SERIOUS BIT) This part s very important. By donating 1 each, your pupils will save children s lives. Simple as that. Organise a bit of extra end-of-term silliness using the ace fundraising ideas in this pack and they could help even more children. 1 could buy a raincoat to help protect a child refugee from the elements. 3 MAKING A SERIOUS DIFFERENCE Photo: CJ Clarke/Save the Children By taking part in Save the Children s Christmas Jumper Day, your pupils will be helping give the world s forgotten children a brighter future. They ll be helping sort out real matters of life and death, like global inequality, poverty and hunger. And they ll be doing all this while wearing some very silly sweaters. SAJA S STORY Saja * is 11 years old and comes from Iraq. Armed conflict forced her family to leave the home they shared. After a difficult journey they arrived at the Khanaqeen camp, where they ve now lived for over a year. When we first came to the camp my children refused to leave the tent, says Saja s mum, Sumaya. There was nothing for them to do in the camp except play around the tents and get into mischief. But now Saja has started going to a space run by Save the Children, where she gets the chance to play, learn and recover from everything she s been through. Photo: CJ Clarke/Save the Children I like coming here, says Saja. It is like my home and everyone plays together. Me and my friends are like sisters. We play different games here like hide and seek, tug of war and running. There are a lot of toys and the teachers take care of us. I want to be a vet, she reveals. Birds don t have doctors to give them treatment or anyone to take care of them. I want to heal them and I want to be a vet, to take care of them. 4 WOOLY WONDERFUL FUNDRAISING IDEAS As well as wearing your favourite festive knits, you and your pupils could help change even more lives by trying out these fab fundraising ideas. JUMPER THE TEACHERS Teachers get sponsored to wear a silly sweater which is decorated by students. The more money students raise, the dafter the teacher s jumper. BAKE SALE Get everyone to bring in festive cakes and biscuits to sell. You ll find recipes for ball of yarn cupcakes and ginger Christmas jumper cake at christmasjumperday. org/schools-pack as well as posters to jumper up your stall. JUMPER JUMBLE Ask everyone to bring in old jumpers and decorations. Hold a Chrismas Jumper Day decorating party and collect donations for each item. SWEEPSTAKE Give the teachers a chance to get in on the jumper fun. Set up a staffroom sweepstake using the poster in this pack and give the winner something special. CHRISTMAS CAROL-OKE Invite grown-ups along to enjoy a concert of Christmassy classics. Why not sell mince pies and raise some extra money by asking parents to turn up in woollies and donate? Photo: Kate Stanworth/Save the Children 6 CHRISTMAS MOVIE DAY Screen a Christmas film in your school hall. Offer popcorn, sweets and drinks in exchange for donations. Pick a festive classic that features excellent knitwear. These fundraising tips and hints should set you off in the right direction, but we d love to hear any new ideas. And if you share any school snaps * on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram, don t forget the hashtag #christmasjumperday * Make sure you have permission from parents before sharing any images of children. 7

5 LOOK THE PART There s no need for everyone to splash out on brand new sweaters. Just ask your children to bring in an old unwanted jumper, then have fun crafting Christmas masterpieces from paper, glue and glitter. MR SNOWMAN Create two large circles from white felt or paper. Use black felt or paper for the eyes and mouth, and make a cone out of orange card for the nose. You can download some cracking tips and templates to help design your jumpers but here are some easy ideas to get you started. Download detailed tips and templates at christmasjumperday.org/ schools-pack RED-NOSED REINDEER Draw a reindeer shape and a big bright nose. For the antlers, fold a piece of white paper or felt in half and cut out an antler shape. Unfold it and you ll have an identical pair. MAKE LIKE A TREE Cut a large tree shape from green felt or paper, then decorate it with glitter or strips of tinsel. Don t forget to put a star on the top! 300 could provide safe drinking water for 60 schoolchildren for a month. WOOLLY AWARDS Whose jumper demonstrates a serious dedication to silliness? And who s gone that extra mile with their fundraising? Hold a special ceremony at school and download our crown template to make sure your sweater stars get the recognition they deserve. 8 9

6 YOUR CHRISTMAS JUMPER DAY CHECKLIST PAYING IN After the day, don t forget to send us all your hardearned fundraising. However much you ve raised, there s a quick and simple way to get it to us. 1. Circle Friday 16 December in your diary (or whichever date you choose) 2. Find extra fundraising resources, posters and other goodies at christmasjumperday.org/ schools-pack 4. Get children to bring in tinsel and baubles to decorate their jumpers 5. Take pictures! * And share them with us using #christmasjumperday 6. Collect and pay in your life-changing funds just follow the instructions on the following page 124 could buy a teacher kit with the supplies to continue providing children with lessons at a school in Syria When paying in your fundraising online, by cheque or by cash, please include your unique Christmas Jumper Day reference number so we know how much you raised and can send you a certificate. You can find your 12-character reference number on the letter that came with this pack (it begins CJD16 ). PAYING IN ONLINE Go to christmasjumperday.org on or after 16 December to make a quick, secure payment. Give the reference number from the letter that came with your pack. PAYING IN AT THE BANK Take your money and the giro slip that came with your letter to your bank or to any NatWest branch. Unfortunately these slips can t be paid in at the Post Office. PAYING IN BY POST Send your giro slip, with a cheque payable to Save the Children, in the envelope provided. Please don t send cash in the post. 3.
