4 Structure Of The Skin Consists of two main parts: Epidermis -thin layer composed of epithelial tissue. Found on fingertips, palms and soles Dermis deeper, thicker connective tissue. Blood vessels, nerves, glands, hair follicles are embedded in the dermal tissue Skin cells are pushed to the skins surface and old ones slough off an average of every four weeks

10 Acne Excess accumulation of dirt and sebum (oil produced by hair follicle) in the follicles and pores of the skin Pores and hair follicles become congested and bacteria begins to feed on the sebum Inflammation and infection results in the formation of a pimple or blackhead around the hair follicle Acne Vulgaris is a common type of acne primarily found in adolescents

11 Rosecea Affects mostly light skinned adults Usually between the ages of 30 and 60 Redness, tiny pimples and noticeable blood vessels Located in the central area of the face (cheeks and nose)

12 Aging Skin Collagen and elastic fibers begin to decrease in numbers around the late forties Decreased size of sebaceous glands leads to dry and broken skin Aging skin is thinner and the migration of new cells slows considerably Production of sweat diminishes Skin heals poorly and becomes more susceptible to pathological conditions

13 Finger and Toe Nails Nails are hard, keratinized epidermal cells Growth of nails slows down during second and third decades of life Nails may become brittle due to dehydration, repeated use of cuticle remover or polish, as well as age Nail fungus can leave the nail plate with a thickened, yellow, or cloudy appearance, becoming rough and crumbly, or separating from the nail bed. Risk factors include poor health, prior trauma, compromised digestive system and immune suppression.
