FSA Parent Information Session Thursday, January 21, 2016 Welcome!
Florida Standards Assessment Replaces FCAT 2.0 The Florida Standards Assessments (FSA) has replaced most FCAT 2.0 assessments in the school year (except 5 th grade science) These assessments will be administered by a new assessment provider, the American Institutes for Research (AIR) These assessments will have a different administration structure with its own features, tools, and characteristics For more information about the Florida Standards Assessment, including sample assessments, test design information, and item specifications, please access the website below:
Other State-Required EOC Assessments End Of Course Assessments are being created for all courses offered through the Orange County Course Code Directory that are not assessed through national (e.g. AP/IB), statewide or other assessments per the Student Success Act. Each course not associated with a national or statewide assessment will have an End Of Course Assessment Outline that identifies the tested standards and provides additional information for each course
Common Core State Standards/Florida Standards With the growing complexity of the world and the increasing demands of the 21st-century workforce, there is little question that all students should graduate from high school fully prepared for college AND careers. The Common Core State Standards Initiative is a state-led effort that established a single set of clear educational standards for kindergarten through 12th grade in English language arts and mathematics that states voluntarily adopt. Forty-five states have adopted the standards. Florida adopted the Common Core State Standards with some revisions/additions. The standards are designed to ensure that students graduating from high school are prepared to enter credit bearing entry courses in two or four year college programs or enter the workforce.

FSA Writing Component Students will be asked to read one or more texts. The text (s) will be no more than words combined. They will respond to the text based question on a prompt. The prompt should be in an essay format and MUST use text evidence to support their response. The response may be either informative/explanatory or an opinion/argumentative.
Example informative/explanatory prompt Write an informative essay about the effects wild animals and humans have on each other when they live in the same area. Use information from the passages in your essay. Manage your time carefully so that you can read the passages; plan your response; write your response; and revise and edit your response. Be sure to include an introduction; information from the passages as support; and a conclusion that is related to the information presented. Your response should be in the form of a multi paragraph essay. Write your response in the space provided.
Example opinion/argumentative prompt Write an article for the school newspaper in which you give your opinion about whether students in your school should switch classes for different subjects. Use information from the passages in your article. Manage your time carefully so that you can read the passages; plan your response; write your response; and revise and edit your response. Be sure to include an introduction; support for your opinion using information from the passages; and a conclusion that is related to your opinion. Your response should be in the form of a multi paragraph essay. Write your response in the space provided.
Scoring for Writing Component There will be three scores per essay: Purpose, Focus, and Organization (0-4 point rubric) Evidence and Elaboration (0-4 point rubric) Conventions of Standard English (0-2 point rubric)

Open Response Kari has two fraction models, each divided into equal-sized sections. The models are shaded to represent the same fraction. Model A is divided into 8 sections, and 5 sections are shaded. Model B is divided into 12 sections. What do you know about the number of sections shaded in Model B? Explain your answer.
FCAT 2.0 Science Vocabulary knowledge is essential. The reading level of the test items should be on 5th grade reading level, except for specifically assessed science terms or concepts. Some words used in the Grade 5 benchmarks are above grade level. Test items that include a collection of data should require the student to analyze or interpret that data (e.g., use data from a scenario to identify a trend) rather than retrieve information directly from a passage, chart, graph, or table. Student must apply knowledge of science concepts taught throughout K-5. Distracter rationales should represent computational or conceptual errors commonly made by students who have not mastered the assessed concepts.
