1 Handwriting and Presentation Policy 2015 Aims: 1. To know the correct style, letter formations and joins in handwriting to ensure consistency across the school 2. To understand the progression in handwriting so that pupils are taught in every lesson and pupils handwriting develops and improves 3. To ensure high expectations in handwriting lessons and that pupils are expected to apply the same standards in other independent writing For pupils to: 1. To know the importance of clear and neat presentation in order to communicate meaning effectively 2. To write legibly in both joined and printed styles with increasing fluency and speed by; Having a correct pencil grip Knowing that all letters start from the top, except d and e which start in the middle Forming all letters correctly Knowing the size and orientation of letters Handwriting At Beeston Primary school we believe that neat well formed handwriting and presentation of written work helps to raise standards as the pupils take pride in and have a sense of ownership of their work. As a school we are adopting the Nelson Handwriting scheme. Please see appendix 1 for a full outline of how this scheme promotes and helps deliver the new National Curriculum.

3 Resources Teachers can use the Nelson Scheme Teacher Resource books. Nelson font is also stored on the IWB so that teachers can use the correct font on their Notebooks to provide the correct model to pupils. Pencils and Pens Pupils will use HB pencils initially and move onto black manuscript pens. We do not allow the children to write in gel, biro or fountain pens. They may start using pens in hand-writing lessons and then begin to use them in all lessons when their writing is neat and consistent enough. Pens must be introduced in hand-writing lessons in Year Four at the latest. Some pupils will find their writing is neater in pencil and should be given the choice to use pen or pencil in independent writing. However, all pupils should be taught to use them in hand-writing lessons. Getting ready to write Seating and posture Chair and table should be at a comfortable height The table should support the forearm so that it rests lightly on the surface and is parallel to the floor Encourage children to sit up straight and not slouch The height of the chair should be such that the thighs are horizontal and feet flat on the floor Tables should be free of clutter Rooms should be well lit

4 Left handed pupils should sit on the left of their partners Pencil grip A tripod grip is the most efficient way of holding a pencil For right handers Hold lightly between the thumb and forefinger about 3cm away from the point The paper should be placed to the right tilted slightly to the left Use the left hand to steady the paper For left handers Hold lightly between thumb and forefinger resting on the first knuckle of the middle finger Hold about 3cm from the tip The hand should be kept below the writing line although some pupils will find a hook more comfortable The paper should be tilted slightly to the right at about Use the right hand to steady the paper NB It is very important that a right handed child is NOT seated on the left hand side of a left handed child as their elbows will collide!

5 Presentation Aims 1. To establish high expectation and pride in everything we do. 2. To create a clear and consistent set of guidelines for the presentation of children s learning. For pupils to 1. Recognise work that is presented to a high standard 2. Be motivated to take pride in their work and present it in the best possible way. Presentation of work is an important aspect of children s learning. The quality of presentation reflects the children skills and the pride they take in their work. How work is presented will depend on the learning purpose and audience. Please see appendix 2 for examples of perfectly laid out work for year 2, 4 and 6 We encourage children to take pride in their work. We set them clear guidelines for each piece of work so they know what is expected of them. We ensure they have the appropriate materials necessary for producing the best quality of work. (good pencils, rulers and appropriate paper for the different tasks.) We provide them with a variety of audiences so that they are encouraged to present good work at all times (e.g. other classes, parents, community, displays ) We encourage children to look after their work and keep their work clean. If a piece of work is not completed to the highest quality then children will need to start the work again on a new page.
