1 PREFACE This volume contains both an alphabetical and a numerical list of typical activities or, sometimes, products. These lists show the UK SIC (2003) class or subclass to which the activity or product should be classified. Both lists attempt to provide a link to the last Standard Industrial Classification that was significantly different in structure, SIC(80), although in some cases it was not possible to do so without further information. The link indicated should, therefore, not be taken to be definitive. It is important to remember that classification involves identification of the appropriate statistical unit. For example, when a transport section of a manufacturing firm is a separate statistical unit, it will be classified to transport (division 60, group 60.2) but when it is an integral part of the main firm then it will be classified to the principal activity of that firm. Activities and products may be known under different names and some have been classified in the alphabetical index under several alternative titles. These alternatives also appear in the numerical index. It has not been possible to list all variations, however. Unlike the SIC80 Indexes publication, it has not been necessary to include references to the equivalent European Union classification system, NACE Rev1.1 today, as the two systems are identical down to and including the four digit class level. User demand for a more detailed coding structure has led to the creation of 40 new five-digit subclasses, for example 74.81/4 Film processing, since the 1997 UK SIC(92) Indexes publication. Additionally, over 20 new classes were created. For all subclasses, whether new or previously available, the balancing, not elsewhere classified or other subclass is denoted by /9". For example, in the 1997 revision of SIC(92) 15.94/2 Manufacture of other fermented fruit beverages became 15.94/9. In some cases, the creation of new subclasses left the balancing subclass, as previously numbered, in the middle of a list of specific subclasses. Consequently, when the balancing subclass was moved and renumbered as a /9 a space was created at the old subclass number. This publication follows the principle adopted in The old subclass number is no longer used and an appropriate note is inserted. Both the new subclasses and the limited renumbering that resulted are incorporated in this publication.
