4 Preface This volume contains both an alphabetical and a numerical list of typical activities or, sometimes, products. These lists show the UK () class or subclass to which the activity or product should be classified. Both lists attempt to provide a link to the last Standard Industrial Classification (UK (), which was significantly different in structure, although in some cases it was not possible to do so without further information. The link indicated should, therefore, not be taken to be definitive. It is important to remember that classification involves identification of the appropriate statistical unit. For example, when a road freight transport section of a manufacturing firm is a separate statistical unit, it will be classified to transport (division 49, group 49.4) but when it is an integral part of the main firm then it will be classified to the principal activity of that firm. Activities and products may be known under different names and some have been classified in the alphabetical index under several alternative titles. These alternatives also appear in the numerical index. Due to changes and innovation, it has not been possible to list all economic activities within this publication; the indexes remain dynamic and any addendums will be published on the UK webpage Unlike the 80 Indexes publication, it has not been necessary to include references to the equivalent European Union classification system, NACE rev 2 today, as the two systems are identical down to and including the four digit class level. The detail of the classification has substantially increased (from 514 to 615 classes). For service-producing activities, this increase is visible at all levels, including the highest one, while for other activities, such as agriculture, the increase in detail affected mostly the lower level of the classification. One effect of the increase in detail at class level has been a reduced need for detail at the subclass level. The total number of subclasses has decreased from 285 to 191.
