2 Foodies Bite size step s to learning about food Theme 3 A healthy, balanced diet Lesson 1 Key stage 1 Date: Lesson objectives Lesson resources Lesson activities To understand that we eat different foods depending on the time of day, occasion and lifestyle. To be able to talk about foods they like and dislike with reasons. From you: Show here any food pictures you have collected. Samples of special food or a visitor and their special food. Provided by us: Work sheet 1 My meals. Work sheet 2 Food and drink I like. Explain to the class the objectives of the lesson Introduce the theme and tell the children that we are going to be thinking about the food they eat and the drinks they consume. Talk about what they eat at different times of the day, e.g. breakfast, snacks, lunch and evening meal. Write the different times on the WB and show examples. Individual work Give out Work Sheet 1 My meals and ask the children to fill it in, they can draw the food if appropriate. Explain that we need to eat and drink regularly to help our bodies grow, be active and stay healthy. Food diary sheets. Whole Class Talk to the children about their favourite foods and why they like them. Ask them about foods they do not like and their reasons. Encourage them to use their senses i.e sight, touch, smell, taste when talking about food. Get the children to fill in work sheet 2 Food and drinks I like with pictures and words where appropriate. Plenary Explain that: The food they like now may change as they get older. That particular food is often eaten on special occasions. Ask the children for some ideas of special food they have eaten. Here would be a good point to show some samples of special food (often as part of a religious festival, or food from another country s festivals) or have a visitor come into school to share their food and experiences. Also show foods grown/eaten in their particular region or that is solely British produce. With the children Give out the food diary sheet here also and explain to the children that they need to fill it in with the help of an adult for 2 days and then bring it back to school. 110 Supported by

13 Theme 3 Lesson 2 KS1 Television script Welcome. Today we will be talking about food and healthy eating. Hang on, why is healthy eating so important? Well, do you want to have the best possible start in life and be as healthy and active as possible? Yes Then a well-balanced diet is an important part of that and it may also help you concentrate and be alert and you all want to learn and be clever like me don t you? Yes That s why it s important for children to eat a balanced diet. Wait a minute, what s a balanced diet? I know, it s a biscuit in each hand! No it s not! If I eat the same amount of white chocolate and dark chocolate is that a balanced diet? (I love chocolate!) No it s not! OK, I give up then, what is a balanced diet? OK the food we eat comes in 5 basic groups - protein, starchy foods, dairy, fruit and vegetables and finally sugars and fats. I like chocolate better! Go on then explain! What s protein? (hold up a picture of Peter Protein) Protein is found in foods like meat, such as turkey, fish, such as tuna and eggs. What do we need protein for? It helps our bodies to grow.

14 Theme 3 Lesson 2 KS1 Television script Wow, I could be 6 foot tall and so strong! OK then so what s next? What are starchy foods? Starchy foods are foods like pasta, potato, rice and wholegrain bread. They give us the energy to keep active. OK and what about dairy? Well, dairy foods such as milk and cheese contain something called calcium, which is great for healthy bones and teeth. So a piece of cheese really can give you a cheesy grin! Well I know what sugars and fats are! Its things like cakes and biscuits, yummy! That s right and sweets and chocolate and fizzy drinks! What are sugars and fats for then? Well they do give us energy and help keep us warm but we shouldn t eat too many of them. Why not? I love eating sweets and chocolate. If we eat too many sweets and food which is high in fat we can become overweight. Being overweight is not good for your health. Sugar can also decay your teeth if eaten too often. Wait a minute! What s this got to do with a balanced diet? Eating a balanced diet to help you keep healthier means eating the right amount of each of the 5 food groups. That means only a small amount of sugars and fats and at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day. In fact people who eat lots of fruit and vegetables tend to be healthier because they are getting plenty of fibre which is good for their tummies and plenty of goodness from all the vitamins and minerals. Eating fresh, frozen, tinned, or dried varieties of fruit and vegetables and fruit juice are all good ways of getting more of these into your daily diet. Go on, give it a try!

21 Theme 3 Lesson 2 KS1 My Healthy Plate Dice game Cut out all the pictures of food on the sheets. Place them on the table in front of you. Have a practice go Read the dice key next to the big plate and practice rolling a number and telling a partner what type of food you will be able to choose. Point to the one you think is right, check on the dice key xx Meat, fish and Alternatives. Dice key 1=Meat/fish 2=Bread/cereal 3=Vegetables/fruit 4=Dairy 5=Treats What you have to do Roll the dice, see what number you get, check the key and see what type of food you have to choose. Find the right picture and put it on your blank plate. The number on each section of the plate tells you how many pictures you have to put on each section. Take it in turns with a partner. The first person to fill both their plates is the winner.

25 Foodies Bite size step s to learning about food Theme 3 A healthy, balanced diet Lesson 3 Key stage 1 Date: Lesson objectives Lesson resources Lesson activities To be able to look at their own meals and assess if they are balanced. From you: Copies of the food diaries filled in at home. Spare copies for anyone who was absent or has lost theirs which can be filled quickly with the help of an adult. Eatwell powerpoint Teacher keep a copy on the WB/OHP for future ref. Explain to the class the objectives of the lesson. Ask the children to get out their food diaries. Show them the Eat well plate powerpoint. Explain to them that to stay healthy we have to eat a balance and variety of foods from the 4 main sections on the plate. We should try not to eat too much from the 5th section fats and sugar foods. Check they understand by asking them Would it be healthy if I ate just fruit? No, we must eat a balanced diet to stay strong and healthy. Show the Eatwell plate on the WB/OHP and recap with the children the 5 food groups that make up the plate. Make sure they understand what a balanced diet is and how many portions of each group they need to eat each day to stay healthy, have lots of energy and grow strong. Now lets look at our food diaries. In your Theme books I want you to draw a line down the middle of a clean page and put a smiley face on one side and a sad face on the other. (Hold up an example). Partner Work With a partner I want you to check your food dairies and write or draw all the healthy things you eat on the smiley side and all the other things you eat on the other. Take turns to talk about your diary with your partner. Plenary Let s look at our answers, as the children share what they have found out about the food they eat with the rest of the class. Is it balanced? Is it healthy? What can we do to make it better? Ask them to add an extra 2 healthy things to make their meals healthier or take something away. Draw or write them at the bottom of your page. Ask the children to Write down which food group each of their items belongs to next to their words or pictures. Use the copy on the WB/OHP to help them. Here could be a good time to make magic sandwiches, cut into star shapes. Discuss with the children what bread would be healthy and which fillings would make their sandwiches healthy. They are magic because they make them strong and healthy and help them grow. 133 Supported by
