2 PFG s laminated glass PFG produces a range of quality laminated glass products for application in buildings, homes, offices and various other uses. Our laminated glass, branded Intruderprufe, is made when two pieces of glass (ClearVue and / or DecorVue) are bonded together by a tough interlayer, called a polyvinyl butyral (PVB) plastic interlayer. The result is a high-performance glass material that can withstand hard blows from a solid object and, should the window break, the fragments stick to the interlayer and so the integrity of the window is maintained. HOW WE MAKE LAMINATED GLASS Cleaning and scrubbing, to remove impurities off the raw glass. The first sheet of quality float glass is fed along the laminating line. A PVB interlayer is drawn over a sheet of glass. A second sheet of glass is placed on top of the PVB to form a sandwich. The sandwich passes through a press and heating process which removes most of the air and effectively fuses the three items. Laminated sheets are stacked in a specific configuration for loading into an autoclave. A silver metallic coating is applied to a surface of high quality float glass by the magnetron sputter process in order to enhance the solar heat eliminating properties of laminated glass. 3 Benefits The benefits of laminated glass: SAFETY The toughness and resilience of laminated glass makes it an excellent safety glazing material. In vertical or sloped applications, laminated glass can resist penetration from impact. If the glass is broken, fragments will adhere to the PVB, reducing the risk of personal injury and property damage. SECURITY Laminated glass offers greater protection for people and property over other glass products. The standard two-ply construction provides resistance to penetration when subjected to attempted forced entry. In multiply configurations, laminated glass can even resist bullets, heavy objects, or small explosions. In most cases, it takes many blows, all in the same spot, to penetrate the glass. SOUND CONTROL The sound damping performance of the PVB makes laminated glass an effective sound control product. Laminated glass is commonly used in airports, museums, sound studios, and schools to reduce unwanted noise from aeroplanes, heavy machinery and traffic, to name a few. SOLAR ENERGY PERFORMANCE Laminated glass offers unique combinations of clear or tinted interlayers and solar heat reflecting coatings which can serve to reduce the harsh effects of glare and solar radiation to create comfort conditions for the occupants of buildings. ULTRAVIOLET SCREENING The ultraviolet () filtering performance of the polyvinyl butyral interlayer helps protect valuable furnishings, displays or merchandise from the fading effects of radiation. NATURAL AND MAN-MADE DISASTERS Laminated glass can help provide protection from injury and property damage from man-made or natural disasters. By keeping the glass intact within the frame, laminated glass helps reduce injuries from large shards of flying glass caused by, for example hurricanes, earthquakes or other unusual loading on the glass.

5 Quality and testing PFG s laminated glass has been tested by repeatedly dropping a 225g steel ball from a height of nine metres. Each drop is equivalent to a hammer blow. The number of blows required to penetrate the glass is as follows: Laminated strength No of blows NS 3 1 HPR 8 2 HI 24 3 Laminated glass is similar to the glass used in car windscreens. The PVB interlayer is clear and therefore invisible when viewed through the glass. However, interlayers can also be tinted to produce colours for various architectural applications. The thickness of a PVB interlayer affects the level of protection offered by the glass, satisfying legal requirements. Risk PVB thickness Low 0.38mm 1 Medium 0.76mm 2 High 1.52mm 3 Laminated quality glass testing: The swing bag test As part of the quality control process, sheets of laminated glass are tested on site using a swing lead-filled bag test. A sheet of glass is secured to a steel frame and a heavy lead-filled bag is released from a designated height. The lead-filled bag strikes the glass, causing the glass to break. But, thanks to the vinyl layer, the glass does not shatter. The pattern of the smash in the glass and the size of the pieces gives an indication of the quality of the laminate process.
