CYBERJAYA UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF MEDICAL SCIENCES (CUCMS) PHARMACY GRADUATES CAREER CHOICES DATIN MARIANI AHMAD NIZARUDDIN MS NURHAFIZAH ALWI DR WAN SAZRINA WAN ZAID MR AHMAD RASHIDI MOHD TAHIR FACULTY OF PHARMACY CYBERJAYA UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF MEDICAL SCIENCES
INTRODUCTION CUCMS was established officially on 23 rd October 2005 under the Private Higher Education Act 1996 in line with the Malaysian government s aspiration to further improve the healthcare of Malaysians through state-of-the-art educational technology and training in medical sciences. Pre-registration training
Year of enrolment of graduates of BPharm programme at CUCMS
LITERATURE REVIEW It becomes a norm for students who are furthering their studies in pharmacy to have a perception that a pharmacist only works in hospital or community settings. Students have little understanding regarding the wide range of career opportunities available for pharmacists (Kirby-Smith et al., 2008). There are several studies that have assessed the career choices of graduating medical students and doctors after completing the pre-registration period. There are few studies that provide information regarding career choices and preferred area of practice among pharmacy students and graduates (Syed Shahzad et al., 2010).
LITERATURE REVIEW In Malaysia, little is known about the reasons why students choose pharmacy as a course to further studies, preferences, about their career and professional role as well as opinions about compulsory government service (Syed Shahzad et al., 2010).
Justification The Malaysian government s pharmacy liberalization of training pupil pharmacist (PRP) will greatly affect the future career choices of graduates and must be studied.
GENERAL OBJECTIVE To identify the current placement of CUCMS pharmacy graduates and their future career choices. Specific objectives: To identify the association between gender and CUCMS pharmacy graduates career choices. To identify the association between ethnicity and CUCMS pharmacy graduates career choices. To identify whether the period of time for pre-registration training had any effect on their career choices. To compare the difference of career choices before and after pre-registration training. To identify the factors that influences the CUCMS pharmacy graduates future career choices.
METHODOLOGY Study design: Cross sectional study Study Period: 1 st of June until 1 st of September Study Population: 99 CUCMS pharmacy graduates Batches: 2005, 2006, 2007 and Sampling method: Blanket sampling ( ing link)
Study Instrument Questionnaire: 4 parts Part I: Respondent s demographic data. Part II: Respondents interest in pharmacy course as an undergraduate. Part III: Respondents placement and experience during preregistration training. Part IV: Respondents future career choices. The questionnaire was adopted and adapted from the Early choices questionnaire for A Longitudinal Cohort Study of Pharmacy Careers Early Choices Questionnaire ( Willis, Shann, Hassell, Centre for Workforce Studies, University of Manchester,2005). Pilot study: some modifications were made to the questionnaire and validated by experts.
DATA ANALYSIS All data collected were analysed by using SPSS software version 20. The Microsoft Excel was also used to transform the collected data into graphs or charts.
RESULTS Response rate: 84.8% (n=67) respondents. * 3 questionnaires were rejected due to incomplete answers.
Gender DEMOGRAPHIC RESULTS Gender Ethnicity Respondents graduation year
RESULTS Objective 1:To identify the association between gender and CUCMS pharmacy graduates career choices. Male Female Total P-value* N (%) N (%) N(%) Hospital 5 (7.5) 32 (47.8) 37 (55.2) **0.03 Community pharmacy 4 (6.0) 4 (6.0) 8 (11.9) Pharmaceutical company 7 (10.4) 3 (4.5) 10 (14.9) Others 4 (6.0) 8 (11.9) 12 (17.9) Total 20 (100) 47 (100) 67 (100) *Chi-square test **p<0.05 shows significance
DISCUSSION: Objective 1 There was an association between gender and the future career choices. This finding does not support a study 2001 in which there was no association between the proportion of female and male students towards the desired place of work. Both male and female students tend to choose the same career choices with 30.4% (n=7) and 37% (n=17) respectively. The independent community pharmacy was become their first choice for desired place of work (Ab Fatah et al., 2001).
RESULTS Objective 2:To identify the association between ethnicity and CUCMS pharmacy graduates career choices. Malay Chinese Indian Others Total P-value* N (%) N (%) N (%) N (%) N (%) Hospital 31 (46.3) 2 (3.0) 4 (6.0) 0 (0.0) 37 (55.2) **0.03 Community 6 (9.0) 2 (3.0) 0 (0.0) 0 (0.0) 8 (11.9) pharmacy Pharmaceutical 3 (4.5) 5 (7.5) 2 (3.0) 0 (0.0) 10(14.9) company Others 8 (11.9) 0 (0.0) 3 (4.5) 1 (1.5) 12 (17.9) Total 48 (71.6) 9 (13.4) 9 (13.4) 1 (1.5) 67 (100) *Chi-square test ** p<0.05 shows significance
DISCUSSION: Objective 2 There was an association between ethnicity and the future career choice. A study reported differently which showed that there was no association of desired place of work based on ethnicity. Malay and Chinese students tend to choose community pharmacy as their career choices with 58.3% (n=21) and 87.0% (n=20) respectively (Ab Fatah et al., 2001).
RESULTS Objective 3: To identify the association between period of Pre-registration Training and CUCMS Pharmacy Graduates Career Choices Total P value* N (%) N (%) N(%) Government hospital 8 (11.9) 29 (43.3) 37 (55.2) ** Private community pharmacy 1 (1.5) 7 (10.4) 8 (11.9) Pharmaceutical company 2 (3.0) 8 (11.9) 10 (14.9) Others 1 (1.5) 11 (16.4) 12 (17.9) Total 12 (17.9) 55 (82.1) 67 (100) *Chi-square test ** p>0.05 shows not significance
RESULTS Objective 4:To compare the difference in career choice before and after pre-registration training. Difference between CUCMS pharmacy graduates PRP placement and their career choice after PRP.
DISCUSSION: Objective 4 Respondents were asked if they were given a chance to choose, where they wanted to do their pre-registration training. Two-third of the respondents choose hospital pharmacy as their first choice to do the pre-registration training with 74.6% (n=50). They were also asked about their future career choices in which area of pharmacy field that they would choose after completing their preregistration training. Although government hospital was still chosen as number one career choices by the respondents before and after the pre-registration training, the number was decrease into half which 32.8% (n=22) from 74.6% (n=50). After pre-registration training, the pharmaceutical industry, government polyclinics (KK) and community pharmacy were chosen as the future career choices most equally by the respondents with 14.9% (n=10).
DISCUSSION: Objective 4 After undergo experience during pre-registration training, a person may find that hospital setting was not the career that fit to them. They tried to find the career that suits to their preferences by changing to another area of work (Brown, 2002).
RESULTS Objective 5:To identify the factors that influences the CUCMS pharmacy graduates future career choices Factors that affect CUCMS pharmacy graduate career choices. Factors Number of respondents, N (%) Pharmacy work experience before. 0 (0.0) 5 (7.5) 16 (23.9) 32(47.8) 14(20.9) Practicals during undergraduate. 0 (0.0) 6 (9.0) 14 (20.9) 32(47.8) 25(22.4) I love to work in hospital environment. 2 (3.0) 6 (9.0) 23 (34.3) 24(35.8) 12(17.9) Better pay. 1 (1.5) 6 (9.0) 29 (43.3) 19(28.4) 12(17.9) I love to work in a lab. 15 (22.4) 13(19.4) 24 (35.8) 15(22.4) 0 (0.0) I want to do my own business. 4 (6.0) 4 (6.0) 34 (50.7) 14(20.9) 11(16.4) Encouraged by my family. 7 (10.4) 9 (13.4) 30 (44.8) 15(22.4) 6 (9.0) Love teamwork. 1 (1.5) 4 (6.0) 17 (25.4) 33(49.3) 12(17.9) Flexible working hours. 5 (7.5) 12(17.9) 19 (28.4) 18(26.9) 13(19.4)

DISCUSSION: Objective 5 The top ten factors that influence CUCMS pharmacy graduates career choices were love to share knowledge, practicals during undergraduates, desire to investigate new things, implementation of liberalization, opportunity for advancement, love to work with other health care professionals, exposure during PRP, working experience, flexible working hours and work in a team.
CONCLUSION In conclusion, there was an association of the future career choice between male and female respondents. There was also an association between ethnicity and the future career choices. Government hospital was still chosen as the top future career choice. Respondents are mostly exposed in hospital pharmacy settings than the others as most of the respondents undergo their pre-registration training in government hospital.
CONCLUSION The top five factors that affect their career choices were love to share knowledge, practical during undergraduates, desire to investigate new things, implementation of liberalization and opportunity to advancement.
