1 POSITIONS: INTERNATIONAL CITIZEN SERVICE-ICS VOLUNTEERS (15 POSITIONS) Recruiting from: Nandi County Duration: 3 months Closing date: 26 th November 2015 Interview date: 1 st to 4 th December 2015 International Citizen Service (ICS) is a Department for International Development (DFID) initiative that will give young adults from Kenya and the UK the opportunity to volunteer alongside each other and join the fight against poverty. The scheme combines the power of youth volunteering with youth participation in development. In Kenya, the ICS programme will be known as VSOJ ICS, and will be implemented by VSO Jitolee in partnership with the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Kenyan Red cross (Machakos Branch), Il Ngwesi Community Trust and Illaramatak. We are seeking applications for ICS Volunteers. This is a 3-month contract starting 24 th January to 16 th April The successful applicants will be expected to spend 3 months volunteering alongside youth from the UK in volunteer placements within Machakos, Loitokitok and Nanyuki. The successful applicant will: Be a Kenyan citizen living within Nandi County Have the potential of leadership, and this will be clearly shown through their participation in community initiatives. ICS is a Department for International Development (DFID) initiative that will give youth from Kenya and the UK the opportunity to volunteer alongside each other and join the fight against poverty. The scheme combines the power of youth volunteering with youth participation in development. How Does It Work? You will: Be part of a team of 20 people, half from Kenya, half from the UK Be paired up with a counterpart from the UK Live and volunteer for 3 months in a community in Kenya Volunteer with community-based organizations What Are the Benefits? Becoming a volunteer will give you the opportunity to: Learn more about how other people live and about yourself Gain experience and skills which will enhance your employability/ entrepreneurship potential Do work which is of practical value to people in Kenya Develop skills, knowledge and attitudes which will enable you to play a positive role in your own society Can I Take Part? When will the programme begin? We are currently recruiting for volunteers for the programme that will begin on 24 th January 2016 and end on 16 th April 2016.

3 How Will I Be Selected? On receiving your completed Application Form, we will call you for a preliminary interview. If successful, we will invite you to attend an Assessment Day. The Assessment Day will consist of an individual interview and a number of group activities. The aim of the day is for us to find out more about you and for you to find out more about the programme. The Assessment Day looks for the following potential: Sensitivity: An awareness of other people's feelings and needs Enthusiasm: A positive outlook Cooperation: The ability to work well with others Commitment to learning: Including open-mindedness Adaptability: The ability to adjust well to new situations What Support is provided? Training - You will receive 3 days of training before the start of the programme and further training at the start of the programme. This will give you the opportunity to understand the ICS Programme better and to begin developing the necessary skills to take part in the programme. You will also begin to look at cross cultural issues and team building. Facilitation - There will be one Project Coordinator with you during the programme, and two Team Leaders, one from the Kenya and one from the UK. The Project Coordinator and Team Leaders will provide training, mentoring and medical support if needed. The programme embraces diversity and promotes inclusion and will therefore work with and on behalf of volunteers to overcome any social and/or physical barriers to that inclusion.
