1 LONE STAR STATE SCHOOL COUNSELOR ASSOCIATION State Award GOAL: THE LONE STAR STATE SCHOOL COUNSELOR AWARD IS DESIGNED TO RECOGNIZE SCHOOL COUNSELING PROGRAMS IN THE STATE OF TEXAS THAT PROMOTE ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AND CLOSE THE GAP TO LEARNING, GROWTH, AND DEVELOPMENT FOR ALL STUDENTS.
2 The LONE STAR STATE SCHOOL COUNSELOR ASSOCIATION (LSSSCA) State Award is a recognition award for school counseling programs that support the American School Counseling Association (ASCA). The goal for this award is to foster excellence in school counseling in the state of Texas and to prepare school counselors to achieve the national RAMP award. The LSSSCA State Award is based on ASCA s 4 Foundational Elements which include Foundation, Program Management, Delivery, and Accountability. Supporting these key elements are 4 Key Themes that serve to support the role of the school counselor. These themes include Leadership, Advocacy, Collaboration, and Systemic Change. Social Emotional Learning is also a vital part of the Lone Star Award and has been included as a valuable measurement of success for students. PROGRAM MANAGEMENT ADVOCACY DELIVERY FOUNDATION LEADERSHIP COLLABORATION ACCOUNTABILITY 1
3 A. FOUNDATION (6 items) LSSSCA AWARD INSTRUCTION MANUAL Belief Statement 1. Addresses the school counselor s role as an advocate for every student 2. Identifies persons to be involved in the planning, managing, delivery and evaluation of school counseling program activities Vision Statement 3. Is bold and inspiring 4. Describes a future where school counseling goals and strategies are being successfully achieved within 5 10 years Mission Statement 5. Aligns with the school s mission statement and show linkages to district and state department of education mission statements 6. Written with students as the primary focus B. MANAGEMENT (10 items) Leadership 1. Supports academic achievement and student healthy development 2. Promotes effective delivery of the comprehensive school counseling program 3. Promotes professional identity by participating in leadership opportunities and/or presenting at professional meetings/conferences 4. At least one member is a member of the Lone Star State School Counselor Association Advisory Council 5. Membership includes all members of the counseling team, an administrator, and school and community stakeholders who plan, manage, and evaluate the deliver of the school counseling program Program Goals 6. In collaboration with the Advisory Council, develop 2 S.M.A.R.T. goals (from 2 of the 4 data elements) in an effort to close achievement gaps and promote student success: a. academic, b. social-emotional, c. behavior, and/or d. safety Annual Agreement 7. Develops an annual agreement that is signed by each member of the school counseling team, the Advisory Council, and administrator 8. Interventions are established that reflect the school counseling program mission and program goals 9. Identifies areas of participation for school counselor professional development that assists with efforts to close the gap and promote student success Use of Data 10. Identifies the results of counseling program goals 2
4 C. ACCOUNTABILITY (3 items) LSSSCA AWARD INSTRUCTION MANUAL Program goal results are analyzed, and implications considered 1. Provides a summary of findings based on counseling program implementation of interventions designed to achieve student success 2. Analyzes program goals and makes necessary adjustments based on program results and identified student needs 3. Demonstrates methods used to share results with school and community stakeholders D. DELIVERY (5 items) Direct student services include curriculum instruction, group activities, appraisal, advisement, counseling and crisis response 1. Delivers school counseling curriculum lessons to classroom and large groups 2. Provides appraisal and advisement to assist all students with academic, career and personal/social planning 3. Provides individual and/or group counseling to students with identified concerns or needs Indirect student services include referrals, consultation, and collaboration to address targeted student needs (System Support) 4. Creates a system of referrals which includes outside agencies that addresses identified students concerns or needs 5. Consults and collaborates with professionals and other persons of interest in an effort to coordinate services that meets students personal, social, emotional, and academic needs E. ADVOCACY (3 items) School counselors advocate for students through the counseling program 1. Shares information with students and stakeholders about the counseling program that includes schoolwide events that enhances the students social/emotional and academic development (pamphlet) 2. Counselors provide opportunities for students to participate in various service-oriented projects and gain access to community resources designed to help them become productive citizens of society (2 embedded photos) 3. Counselors are an integral part of the campus community as evidenced in their role as members of various committees that support student achievement F. SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING (3 items) (TESTIMONIAL) Understands that the best learning occurs within the context of a safe and supportive school, family, and community environment in which children are valued and respected 1. Implements a schoolwide program that addresses student recognition that fosters the motivation to achieve 2. Encourages student participation in leadership activities that promote self-awareness and responsible decision-making 3. Provides opportunities for students to interact with others from diverse backgrounds to promote social awareness and develop healthy relationship skills 3
