2 At the Kansas Food Bank, we re filling plates... and feeding hope. For the Kansans we serve, having reliable access to nutritious food is about more than eating it s having the basic necessities they need to thrive, and the added security of knowing their neighbors truly care for their wellbeing. As one mother said with relief after visiting her local food pantry in Wichita, Thank you. You ll never know how much this food really helps. It s truly unbelievable when you think about the scale of our work that thousands of supporters, food donors, volunteers and our great staff make possible. Over the past year we ve delivered more meals to more hungry people than at any time in our history a huge accomplishment that couldn t happen without our team of committed hunger fighters. And you re one of them. We are so encouraged when we hear stories of how our services help Kansas s families, children, seniors and individuals in need. We strive to serve Kansans of all ages, and our Food 4 Kids program has, with the help of our community, seen steady growth since it began in We re now serving 7,158 children in 400 Kansas schools we re so proud to know we re serving that many Kansas children in need. We are also happy to report that this year we unrolled our new initiative to fight hunger on the other end of the spectrum: seniors. With the backing of Senator Bob Dole, we ve started the Bob Box program, which provides rural older Kansans with boxes full of nutritious groceries. These are proud, respectable seniors that are receiving a hand up not a hand out. In addition to ramping up services for children and seniors, we ve doubled our efforts to meet the needs of the most rural areas of our state with our mobile pantry program and SNAP (formerly food stamps) outreach. We re also working hard to distribute thousands of pounds of fresh produce through our hunger relief partners to ensure we re not just providing food, but good, nutritious meals to families and individuals in need. We remain humbled by the compassion Kansans have for our fellow neighbors it s so important. It s a pleasure to work with generous friends and partners who help us in so many ways, and we re very happy to be able to tell you about our successes in feeding Kansans in need. We know it wouldn t be possible without you thank you. Our mission is to provide comprehensive and compassionate HungerCare whenever and wherever it is needed to safeguard the health, well-being and productivity of food-insecure Kansas families and their children, as well as senior citizens, the homeless and the chronically ill and impoverished among us. 5 Our Service Area Our Programs Are Making a Difference In an effort to reach every single Kansan in need of food regardless of age or location we ve unveiled special programs throughout the years to place a special focus on seniors, children, rural Kansans and families and individuals eligible for SNAP assistance. Here s what our programs accomplished in Fiscal Year 2013: SNAP Outreach Assisting households with SNAP (formerly food stamps) applications is yet another way the Kansas Food Bank helps families who struggle with food insecurity. Our outreach workers help applicants complete Mobile Pantries an online application and submit required paperwork to the state for processing. Focus for SNAP outreach has been in western Kansas, specifically counties that do not have offices for potential applicants to apply. In 2012 our drivers logged more than 127,000 miles, an average of 10,000 miles per month bringing food to our fellow Kansans in need. Our trucks continue to deliver much needed food to outling partner agencies and mobile pantry locations. Bob Box Bob Box Sponsored in part by Senator Robert Dole Fighting Senior Hunger The population of senior citizens living in rural Kansas is significant. This older generation of Kansans has shaped our state into the Kansas we know today a fine place to live. But now, living on a fixed income in our state s most remote locations, these seniors are having a hard time obtaining the basic necessities for survival. Many can t afford to keep their cupboards stocked with enough nutritious food to last the month. Senior Box In addition to Bob Boxes for rural Kansans, we continue to provide Senior Services in Wichita with monthly food boxes for homebound seniors. These boxes contain a This year, with the backing of Senator Bob Dole, the Kansas Food Bank unveiled the Bob Box program to bring relief to these seniors in need. By partnering with local Health Departments to identify and distribute boxes to seniors at risk of hunger, we have been able to distribute 4,800 Bob Boxes across 25 northwestern Kansas counties. Each Bob Box contains 28 pounds of food, which equals about 21 nutritious meals. Boxes are distributed discreetly, preserving the dignity and respect of this fine generation of Kansans. variety of non-perishable food items that are staples for seniors. Senior Services partners with us to ensure seniors who are most in need receive this much-needed supplement. For many rural Kansans, access to quality, nutritious groceries is limited due simply to a lack of infrastructure. That s why the Kansas Food Bank has developed a mobile pantry program to help provide underserved areas of our state with access to much-needed food. Leanna Binns works at the Wichita County Health Department in Leoti and knows how great the need for food is in this rural area. Participants start lining up at least 20 minutes before distribution time, she explains. We enjoy working with the Kansas Filling the Gap There are a few times of the year children who rely on their school s free or reduced-price meal program dread school holidays and the two week time frame from when USDA summer meals end and when school begins. When the cafeteria doors close, these children are at risk Food Bank to make sure families in our rural community have access to monthly food. Without this partnership, I know many would struggle to put meals on the table. In Fiscal Year 2013, we had 75 mobile pantries providing healthy food to 36 different communities. 5,535 families were served that s a total of 16,658 people receiving 211,069 meals. Our mobile pantry program is ensuring that every Kansan has access to nutritious food no matter how remote their location. of going long periods of time with nothing to eat. To fill this gap, the Kansas Food Bank continues to provide shelf-stable meals at 14 sites around Wichita. In Fiscal Year 2013, over 11,000 meals were provided to hungry children when school was not in session.

6 Food 4 Kids The Kansas Food Bank is experiencing unprecedented growth in service to children at risk of hunger throughout our 85-county service area. Even short periods of time without food can have long-term negative effects on a child s development and ability to concentrate. Plus, an empty stomach will make a child more fatigued and irritable increasing behavior and learning issues. Food 4 Kids provides weekend packs of kidfriendly, nutritious food for children who are at risk of hunger each Friday during the school year, when Saturday and Sunday can mean Fresh Produce The Kansas Food Bank has been committed to increasing the amount of fresh produce available through our network of HungerCare providers over the past two years. We know that all too often, parents trying to stretch their food budget pass up fresh items at two long days without enough food to eat. In the school year, Food 4 Kids served 7,158 students at 400 schools. Feedback from counselors, teachers, principals and school nurses reassures us that the program is a reliable source for filling weekend hunger gaps. I can see a difference if they ve eaten anything over the weekend, explains Johnny Gonzales, school counselor at Caldwell Elementary, a Food 4 Kids participant school in Wichita. There s nothing like the look in a 5-year-old s eyes when they receive their pack of food. By providing Kansas children with the food they need today, Food 4 Kids is paving the way for a vibrant, thriving community tomorrow. the grocery store in place of cheaper, less nutritious options. And in many rural locations throughout our state, fresh items are simply not available due to a lack of infrastructure. In Fiscal Year 2013, the Food Bank distributed 1,814,698 pounds of fresh produce to families. Looking Ahead As we move forward, our focus remains the same: to provide every hungry family, child, senior and individual in Kansas with access to nutritious food. We re aiming to reach more Kansans in need than ever before, and reaching out to rural, underserved communities is one way we ll accomplish that. We ll continue to deploy mobile pantries to our state s most remote locations, and expand Bob Box to reach even more rural seniors in need. We ll enhance our SNAP outreach to educate and assist more households in obtaining the assistance they need, as well as increase fresh produce distribution so families have access to healthier options. In Fiscal Year 2014, we have set an aggressive goal of providing 11 million meals for Kansans in need we need your partnership more than ever.
