Yearbook Design Handbook Compiled by: Emma Siritzky On the home page of Yearbook Avenue first click the Create tab. Then select Page Designer from the drop-down menu.
When you enter the page designer, this is the menu bar at the top of the page. Save Print Undo & Redo Spell Check Highlight incomplete elements Lock page elements Leave a sticky note on the page These are three very important buttons on the main menu bar that you will need for the basics of designing. Create a photo box (and choose its shape) Create a text box Create a shape or solid colored box (and choose its shape)
This is the format tab when you select a picture box. Click on the Format tab at the top to edit technical elements of the page (alignment, font, layering, spacing) Add a drop shadow to a picture box to make it more 3d This makes it really easy to make two page elements perfectly aligned on the left, right, top, or bottom Edit layering of selected page elements Round corners of picture Change the shape of the picture box Change text-wrapping options (text going over or around picture boxes) Group selected page elements together (so it s easy to move them together)
This is the format tab when you select a text box. Outline the text box (you can change to fill color and shadow color below) Change the transparency level Select a font Change text color Change font size Change text alignment: left aligned, centered, right aligned, justified Bold, italicize, and underline text Change the spacing between each line of text Wrap text around picture boxes
This is the effects tab when you select a text box. Click on the Effects tab at the top to add cool effects to elements of the page Add a shadow to an element of the page and edit the properties of the shadow with the options below (blur, opacity, angle, color etc.) Add a glow to an element of the page and edit the properties of the glow with the options below (blur, opacity, color etc.)
This is the effects tab when you select a text box. These buttons open tools that can fix red-eye, make a cutout picture (get rid of the background), or select one part of a picture to be in color Colorize a picture and make it tinted in a certain color (or make it black and white or sepia) ** The rest of the buttons are the same as when you open the effects tab for a text box
The File tab at the top left lets you save and create new practice pages and templates. Save your work Save a page as a template (you can place template designs on any page in the book) Create a new practice page to start designing The edit tab at the top left lets you edit your work and undo/redo any actions. Duplicate elements on the page using the copy and past buttons (this is really useful if you wan to make sure two elements are the same size) Select text and check the spelling!!!
The View tab at the top left lets you change the settings for how you view the page. This hides the grid that shows each pica This hides the gray page border This makes the page elements snap to the gray grid instead of letting you choose it s specific spacing This hides the gray page border This hides the rulers at the top and left of the page This locks the green guides in place so you don t accidentally move them
The arrange tab at the top left lets you change the placement of page elements. Lock page elements Group together page elements Make two page elements perfectly aligned on the left, right, top, or bottom Change the layering order of page elements Flip page elements vertically and horizontally and rotate page elements Mirror the page (flip the design)
The Go To tab at the top left lets you navigate the website. Go to other pages on Yearbook Avenue without having to go to the home page. The Designs tab on the right lets you access your template and practice pages under the Custom tab. Find your saved templates and practice pages. You can click and drag them onto a blank page to place your design. You can also find your saved click-n-go elements that you can then place on any page
Right click on the ruler on the top of the page to add green page guides on the 6s or the 8s or to clear all guides. 3 columns = 6 columns total (the 6s) 4 columns = 8 columns total (the 8s)
Page Element Glossary: Dominant: An element on the spread that is most prominent Eyeline: A way to link a spread through a horizontal line which runs across both pages of the spread Gutter: the break between the two pages of a spread Folio: the page number/spread name at the bottom of the page Pica: a unit of measure (the grid is made up of picas) Spread: Two facing pages in the yearbook Design Rules: Design with either 6 columns or 8 columns to align the elements of the page. The dominant element of the page should be 2-3 times larger than the other elements of the page. Always have an eyeline running across the spread to unify the elements. Only the dominant element can cross the eyeline. Text should be able to escape the page in two directions; don t trap the text between other elements of the spread. Start designing with the pictures in the center of the spread and the copy on the outside. Make sure the text alignment is the same throughout the book to make it cohesive. The spacing between pictures should be even. Elements that cross the gutter unify the two pages of the spread. White space should be planned.
