5 Eat well! The Eatwell Plate is for everyone over two years old The Eatwell Plate shows the types and proportions of different foods from different food groups contributing to a healthy balanced diet The Eatwell Plate does not have to apply to every meal Balance can be achieved over a day/week

16 What is not shown on the plate? Fluid - Water, liquid milk and fruit juice On average the body needs two litres of fluid (water) a day to help the body to function properly 6-8 glasses water daily Try to limit fruit juice to 150ml as it contains sugar!

17 Composite foods Much of the food we eat is in the form of dishes or meals rather than individual foods These are called composite foods Composite foods are made up from more than one food group from the Eatwell Plate Can you name some composite foods?

22 The Eatwell Plate activities Get the children to help sort the Food Images into the correct food groups in order to complete a wall poster Logbook what it means to be healthy I like, I dislike, I m not sure if I like (why?) Postcards from fruit/veg pollination germination farm to fork (food origin and food miles) recipe Portion control and serving size

23 Serving vs Portion Get each student to measure out portions of different food stuffs using only their hands as guides. Weigh each portion and explain to students the difference between portions and serving Hand sizes vary, so each student attain different quantities thus, becoming familiar with relative portion size and serving size

24 Summary The Eatwell plate shows us that we need to eat a variety (rainbow) of foods to be healthy It helps us recognise the different food groups and how each groups contributes to a healthy balanced diet It helps us remember that we need different amounts of certain foods in order to remain healthy It helps us understand that we need different foods and drinks to be healthy
