Neville Bonner Neville Bonner was the first Indigenous Australian person to be elected to the Parliament of Australia. He was a Queensland Senator. Neville Bonner was born in New South Wales in His mother was an Indigenous Australian. His father was an English immigrant. He left before Neville was born. At the time, there was a law that said Aborigines had to leave towns before sunset each day. This meant that Neville s mother couldn t have him in a hospital like most mothers. He was born under a palm tree. Neville s early life was very tough. When he was seven he had to go to work with his family. They cleared bush with small axes. Neville wasn t allowed to go to school. But his grandmother managed to talk a teacher into letting him go for a brief time when he was fourteen. She always stood up for her family when they were treated differently because of their race. Neville proved to be a good student. But he couldn t stay long. When his grandmother died, Neville set off to find work. He became a stockman. Over the next few years he did every kind of job he could, including cane cutting and logging. In 1943 he married his first wife, Mona. They went to live on Palm Island, an Aboriginal settlement. He began to work to help his people. In 1967 there was a referendum, or vote, in Australia. It meant that Aboriginal people could now be counted as Australian citizens. Neville decided it was time to speak up. In 1971 he became Australia s first Aboriginal senator. For the next twelve years he was a voice for his people. Neville felt a huge responsibility to stand up for Indigenous Australians in Canberra. In 1979, he was named Australian of the Year. Neville Bonner died in He had spent his life trying to get the best for his people. 10

The Daintree The Daintree Rainforest is a unique place. Located in north Queensland, it is about 1200 square kilometres in size. It is home to one of the biggest range of plants and animals anywhere. Daintree, the Rainforest The Daintree Rainforest is over 135 million years old. This is ancient even by rainforest terms. The Amazon Rainforest is only 50 million years old. About 430 types of birds live in the Daintree. Thirteen of these don t live anywhere else. 65% of Australia s bat and butterfly species live in the rainforest. It also is home to 30% of all the country s frog species. Many of the animals in the Daintree are endangered. This means they re close to dying out. Some of the animals you can see in the Daintree are huge saltwater crocodiles, goannas and tree frogs. But there are thousands of different animals in this amazing area. Daintree, the Man Richard Daintree came to Australia from England. He was a sick man. He hoped the warmer weather would be good for him. Daintree was a geologist. This is a scientist who is interested in the materials that make up the earth, like soil and rocks. He found several types of plant. Daintree was very interested in a pretty new invention called photography. His photos of Australia were popular back in England. He returned there in 1876, after getting sick again, and died in The rainforest is named after Daintree. The Endangered Cassowary Today some Daintree animals are endangered. They include the rare cassowary. These are large birds that can t fly. There used to be lots of cassowaries. But their numbers have gone down from being hit by cars, being trapped by people trying to trap feral pigs and being killed by dogs. All of these are things brought about by humans. There are now only about 500 cassowaries in the Daintree. But this is up from about 50 in
