1 Game 5D1: Representing and interpreting data Strand: Data Strand Unit: Representing and interpreting data Curriculum Objectives Covered: Collect, organise and represent data using pictograms, single and multiple bar charts and simple pie charts. Read and interpret pictograms, single and multiple bar charts and simple pie charts. Compile and use simple data sets. Explore and calculate averages of simple data sets. Use data sets to solve problems. Name: Surveys Aim: To collect data on various topics, present the results using pictograms, single and multiple bar charts and simple pie charts. Activity Area: Classroom. Surveys also conducted in other classrooms. Duration: This activity could be carried out in one long session (approx. 1 hour) or over a number of days. Linkage: Number: Fractions Shape and space: Lines and Angles Integration: Geography: Natural Environments Science: Energy and Forces (Survey topics can be integrated with any subject) Resources: Graph paper and blank paper for each child. Set Up: 1. The children are split into teams of approximately 6 children per team. Start Playing: 1. Each team selects a different survey to conduct in the school. Ideas for surveys could be:
2 Subject Favourite Author Favourite Colour Favourite Crisp Flavour Favourite Sport Options Jacqueline Wilson, Roddy Doyle, Dick King-Smith, Enid Blyton, J.K. Rowling. Red, Yellow, Green, Blue, Pink. Cheese & onion, Salt & vinegar, Ready salted, Smoky bacon, Prawn Cocktail. Football, Tennis, Swimming, Basketball, Running. 2. Each team goes to a different classroom to survey the children in that class. 3. The team explains to the class that they must choose only one option from the list that will be read out. 4. Each child in the participating class decides which answer from the list is most correct for him/her, and raises his/her hand when that option is called out. 5. The survey team count up the number of raised hands for each option and record a tally. 6. When a team has collected its data, the children go back to their own classroom. 7. Each team reads from its tally chart, and compiles a simple data set (fig.a). 8. Each team presents their findings using a combination of pictograms (fig.b), single bar charts (fig.c), multiple bar charts (fig.d) and simple pie charts (fig.e). 9. The team can split up to work on these charts. e.g. 1 child could work on the pictogram, 1 on the single bar chart, 1 on the multiple bar chart and 2 on the pie chart. *The children could also use computer applications to organise and represent data. 5 4. Each team should then work together to come up with a short list of questions based on their data. e.g. 5. How many people s favourite author is J.K Rowling? 6. How many more people prefer Jacqueline Wilson compared to Roddy Doyle this year? 7. Did more than half of the total people surveyed prefer any one author? 8. Who is the most popular author? 9. Who is the least popular author? Each team should discuss the answers to their questions, but should not write them down. 12. Each team s charts along with their questions should then be put on display in order to allow all children in the class the opportunity to look at the work of the other teams. 13. The children can attempt to answer the questions on display relating to each team s charts.
