Summary for environmental stakeholders

Background The basis of today s airspace structure over London and the South East was established several decades ago when there were fewer aircraft in the skies and they had basic navigation technology. Aircraft today use very accurate navigation technology (PBN) and new European legislation requires all member States, including the UK, to revise our airspace to maximise the use of these new technologies. Change is therefore inevitable; our focus in this consultation is on how best to enable that change. This change gives us the opportunity to: to improve efficiency (our airspace is complex as demonstrated in next slides) reduce the environmental impact of air traffic This consultation is the first stage in a wider programme to deliver the UK s Future Airspace Policy

Scope of Phase 1 In this stage we address changes to airspace supporting Gatwick Airport from ground level up airspace supporting London City above 4,000ft Later stages will address proposals for airspace supporting other parts of the London airports network, to be complete by These changes are not to do with additional runways. Additional runways will need further change at a later date (we assume 2025+) - we await a Government decision on runways

Key Points We are consulting on areas of airspace, not on routes. Final route positions will be determined after considering the consultation feedback The net effect of these proposals will be less noise. However, flight paths will change and this may mean some areas will be overflown more than today, others less, and some will not notice any significant change. We include the possibility of designing in low altitude respite routes for Gatwick Enabled fuel saving of 10,000 to 20,000 tonnes per year Average CO 2 per flight reduced potential saving of up to 70,000t CO 2

Your Role We ask you questions about our objectives is our justification sound? our decision making criteria how should we balance impact? technical issues (aimed at aviation users) local factors to consider in on-going design process With respect to local impact we provide maps showing today s traffic patterns maps showing the wide areas in which the new routes need to be positioned data showing how many aircraft may use the route and how loud they may be The design is still flexible; your feedback can help shape a solution that optimises the benefits

Consultation Area Part E London City Airport Part F Part B Gatwick Airport Part C Part D

Part D Proposed changes above 7,000ft over parts of Hampshire, Sussex, Surrey and Kent: Gatwick arrivals Gatwick southbound departure New arrival route system called Point Merge in airspace above 7,000ft More continuous descents More continuous climbs Reduced average fuel burn and less CO2 emitted per flight Reduction in the area regularly overflown at lower altitudes (knock-on benefit to other Part B/C geographic areas) Flight paths will change some areas will be overflown more than today, others less, and some will not notice any significant change.

New PBN arrival routes to join the final approach from both the west and the east of the airport; these will bring traffic from the Point Merge arrival system in a more concentrated stream than today Creation of extra respite routes; these are an option for all arrival and departure routes Note that these low altitude changes may require redesign and repositioning of current noise preferential routes.
