Interaction of Color Color Schemes No color stands alone. In fact the effect of a color is determined by many factors: the light reflected from it, the color that surrounds it, or the perspective of the person looking at the color. A color scheme is simply a plan for organizing colors. Color schemes are classified by how the colors relate to each other on the color wheel. Basic color schemes: Monochromatic The monochromatic color scheme uses variations in value and saturation of a single color. Monochromatic colors go well together, producing a soothing effect. The monochromatic scheme is very easy on the eyes. Mark Tansey The primary color can be mixed with neutral colors such as black, white, or gray. The monochromatic scheme is easy to manage. This scheme lacks color contrast.

Mark Tansey. Purity Test 1982, 72 x 96 in., cat.5, p.49...indians on horseback gaze down...at Robert Smithson's Spiral Jetty, Smithson had sought to create a pure image. The Indians, unaware of the spiral's function as a work of art, attempt to decipher it as a symbol..." From Judi Freeman Mark Tansey Shannon Hannond. Monochrom, Acrylic on paper, 9 x 12 inches, 2013

Analogous Pongsak Tangtiwaja. ว ดกลางคลองสระบ ว, Digital Photography, 2015 The analogous color scheme combines several hues that sit next to each other on the color wheel. One color is used as a dominant color while others are used to enrich the scheme. The analogous scheme is similar to the monochromatic, but offers more variation in color. The analogous color scheme is as easy to create as the monochromatic, but looks richer. This scheme lacks color contrast. Pongsak Tangtiwaja. Thai Mural Painting, Digital Photography, 2015

Complementary Color Scheme The complementary color scheme is made of two colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel. The complementary color scheme offers stronger contrast than any other color scheme, and draws maximum attention. ^ Pierre Auguste Renoir. Girl And Golden Hat < Henri Matisse (French, ). Woman with a Hat, autumn 1905 Oil on canvas; 31 1/4 x 23 1/2 in.

Split Complementary Color Scheme A color and the two colors next to its compliment on the color wheel The split complementary scheme offers more variation of color than the complementary scheme while retaining strong visual contrast. The violet sky in The Yellow House is balanced by a range of yellows and oranges near the complementary opposite of the blue Vincent Van Gogh. The Yellow House, 1888, oil on canvas

Corey Day. Slip Complimentary, Acrylic on canva s, 2012 (yellow-orange, violet, blue) NataliaTolopa. Slip Complimentary, Acrylic on canvas,2012 (green, redorange, red-violet)

Triadic color scheme Triadic color scheme uses 3 colors equally spaced around the color wheel. This scheme is popular among artists because it offers strong visual contrast while retaining balance, and color richness. The triadic scheme is not as contrasting as the complementary scheme, but it looks more balanced and harmonious. The triadic color scheme offers high contrast while retaining harmony. Corey Day. Triadic, Acrylic on canvas, 2012

Roy Lichtenstein( ) A strong triadic combination of triadic primary colors, red, blue and yellow. Natalia Tolopa. Triadic, Acrylic on paper, 2012

Tetradic (double complementary) color scheme Tetrads are comprised of 4 evenly spaced hues. The tetrad scheme offers more color variety than any other scheme. This scheme is the richest of all the schemes because it uses four colors arranged into two complementary color pairs. This scheme is hard to harmonize; if all four colors are used in equal amounts, the scheme may look unbalanced, so you should choose a color to be dominant or subdue the intensity of the colors.
