Seal the entire book box and one insert with DecoArt MultiPurpose Sealer; using the glaze wash 1

3 brush. Allow to dry. Lightly sand, wipe off with a lint-free cloth. Basecoat the entire book with Bleached Sand; using the glaze wash brush, achieve an opaque coverage. Basecoat the trim edges and backside of the front cover of the book box with Charcoal Grey; using the 12 shader. Smoke Marbleizing Technique: 2. *This faux finish on the book box will accent a variety of designs you to choose to paint on the inserts. You might want to have a scrap piece of wood prepped to try this technique before going directly to the box. Also you could try using a spoon, fork or palette knife to see the different effects each one makes. I used the palette knife. The outside front and back of the book box are faux finished. To smoke, light the candle in a holder and allow to burn for a few minutes, until you have a good flame. Practice moving the scooped side of the tablespoon, the fork or palette knife wiggling and moving it up and down in the flame. Watch the steady stream of black carbon rising above, this stream of smoke is what adheres to the project piece. Hold the piece about 6 above the flame moving the piece around so that the carbon will adhere to various places. Be careful not to let the palette knife touch the surface and handle with care - the carbon will smudge. If you get too much carbon, wipe off with a soapy cloth, redo the basecoating and re-try marbleizing. When you have achieved the desired effect, spray lightly with matte spray to avoid smudging. When marbleizing a larger or awkward piece, you will have to smoke it in sections. Smoke one section, spray, let it dry and repeat steps to the other sections until the entire piece is marbleized. After the piece has dried, varnish the entire piece with the Oval Wash Combo brush; it doesn t leave any visible brush stroke marks after the varnish has dried. Using the gray graphite paper, a traced pattern, and a stylus transfer the horizon line, structures, shrubs, and pines along the horizon to the insert. Use a ruler to transfer the straight lines of the design. Painting Instructions: Winter Sky 3. With the dampened silk sponge and Deep Midnight Blue, pat in the sky area starting at the top of the insert. As you work down the sky area, pick up Light French Blue on the other pre-dampened sponge for the lighter color at the horizon. Blend the colors together where they meet. Moon 4. Transfer the moon. Dampen the area around the moon with clean water, then with thinned Light French Blue pit pat around the moon; use the mop brush to soften. Allow to completely dry, then repeat the steps; if necessary, to brighten. 2

4 Basecoat the moon with two sheer coats of Snow White; using the 6 filbert. Allow some of the background color of Deep Midnight Blue to come through for shades. Background Horizon Pines 5. With a pencil and ruler, lightly transfer the center line for each pine. Now slightly dampen the surface with clean water where the pine will be pulled. The dampened surface will allow the pines to softly bleed; giving the illusion of the pines in the distance. Use the 4 filbert loaded with a mixture of Snow White + a shot of Blue Haze Light across the chisel edge, pull the lighter background pines first. Up on the chisel edge, vertically pull the very top of the pine. Horizontally tap from left to right for the boughs, slowly and slightly widening as you work towards the base of the pine. Allow a bit of the background to show through; so the pine doesn t look like a triangle. Repeat the same steps with the front pines; using Black Green. For snow on the pines, repeat the steps lightly with Snow White, randomly tapping on the boughs. Background Horizon Shrubs 6. With the appropriate size Texture brush and Evergreen, dance in the shrubs along the horizon behind the structures. Then with Snow White on the toe of the Texture brush, lightly and randomly dance snow on each shrub. The snow will also help to separate shrub clusters. For proper use of the Texture brush, use the following method. Dampen the bristles with water to start the separation of bristles. Tap bristles into the paint on your palette, hold it perpendicular to your palette, pounce it up and down to get some of the paint off keeping the paint sparse on the brush. Note this brush can be used on the whole foot or just the toe. Tap lightly on the surface, dance with the brush up and down, rolling the brush in different directions in between your fingers when it is up in the air (like dancing the twist, light on your feet). 3

5 Allow some drying time in between dances so the paint sets up and you don t end up with a globby or muddy look. Land Areas 6. Basecoat the land areas with two coats of Snow White; using the glaze wash brush. Corner load the angle with Winter Blue, randomly chisel float* over the snow areas. *chisel float by corner loading the angle, blend off on your palette, lay the bristles of the brush flat on the surface, chisel edge up. Push the paint on the bristles from left to right in a scratching motion, allowing the bristles to pull a broken line that is slightly floated. Using the gray graphite paper, a traced pattern and a stylus transfer the remaining design to the surface. Use the graph ruler to aid in the transfer of straight lines, by dragging the stylus along the ruler s edge. Corner load the angle with Winter Blue, float shading along the bottom right of the background snow/land area. Background Pines 7. For the pines to the right of the yellow structure and behind the barn, repeat the steps for Background - Horizon Pines; using the 4 or 6 filbert with Evergreen. Then randomly with Snow White; for snow. Background Shrubs 8. Using the med Texture brush and Evergreen, dance in the shrubs to the left of the yellow structure, barn, and behind the snowman. Then randomly with Snow White; for snow. Bare Tree 9. Double load the 4 shader with Honey Brown + Espresso, base the trunk of the tree and then up on the chisel edge, pull the bare branches. Then with Snow White, randomly dab snow on the branches. Painting Structures 10. Use the appropriate size shaders to basecoat the structures. The appropriate size liners to pull wall lines. Use the appropriate size shaders to wash over the shade side walls; corner load the angle to 4

6 float shade on the opposite wall. Each numbered step will contain instructions to complete the structure. Roofs, windows, doors will be completed in a later step. Refer to line drawing for numbering. Structures #1 & #3 11. Wasabi Green basecoat walls Uniform Blue pull wall lines; wash over left walls; float shade across the top of the right walls Structure #2 12. Autumn Red basecoat walls Black Plum pull wall lines; wash over left wall; float shade across the top of the right wall Structure #4 13. 7 Roofs 16. Snow White basecoat roofs Corner load the angle with Uniform Blue, lightly float shading across the top of each roof. Double load the 0 liner with Uniform Blue + Snow White, pull the side roof lines. Load the 0 liner with Snow White, re-stroke over the side roof lines; to brighten. Doors and Windows 17. With the appropriate size shaders, pull the Bleached Sand barn door; Espresso yellow structure door; Deep Midnight Blue windows With the 10/0 liner and Light French Blue, pull the barn door handle. With the 10/0 liner and Bleached Sand, pull the window panes, shutters, and door knob on the yellow structure. Snowmen 18. Snow White basecoat snowmen Corner load the angle with Uniform Blue, float down the left side of the snowman and the c stroke for the arm inset. Then corner load the angle with Camel, float a tint highlight down the right side of the snowman. Double load the 10/0 liner with Honey Brown + Espresso, pull the twig arm. With the 10/0 liner and Tangelo Orange, pull carrot nose. Path 19. Corner load the angle with Uniform Blue, lightly float down both sides of the path. Ground Snow 20. Corner load the angle with Snow White, float along the front side of the snow hills; to brighten. Crops 21. With the sm Texture brush and Espresso, dance in the crops in the foreground. Foreground Shrubs and Foliage 22. With the sm Texture brush and Evergreen, dance in the foreground shrubs and foliage. Then with Snow White on the toe of the Texture brush, lightly and randomly dance snow. Falling Snow 23. With the Spattering Tool (or Old Toothbrush) and thinned Snow White, lightly spatter over the design area. Finishing: 24. To protect finished painted pieces, varnish the entire book box and insert with the DuraClear matte varnish; using the Oval Wash Combo. This brush doesn t leave any visible brushstroke marks after the varnish has dried. Finishing Touch: Add a decorative knob to the book box if desired. 6
