Cambridge, Ontario N3H 0A8 The following information pertains to the portfolio/interview portion of the application to the Bachelor of Applied Technology in Architecture Project and Facility Management program at Conestoga College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning (ITAL). Attending the program information meeting and interview/portfolio review is a mandatory component for admission into the APFM program. Applicants unable to attend in person because of excessive distance may request to submit a digital portfolio and Skype interview. Information on this process and additional information for International Applicants is at the end of this document. Application process You submit your application through OCAS You will receive an invitation from the college registrar to attend an information session and interview/portfolio review You confirm your intention to attend one of the interview session dates/times The process for the confirmation is explained in the letter of invitation. Follow the instructions to establish a date/time for your interview. Program information session and interview/portfolio review On the chosen date of your interview session there are two activities: o an information session explaining some key aspects of the APFM program, o the individual interviews. Program information session At the start of each interview session, there will be a brief presentation that provides an introduction to, and overview of, the APFM program. The timing of the information session is indicated on your invitation letter. The information session is followed by individual interview/portfolio review sessions. The individual interview/portfolio review sessions are 30 minutes in length and will take place over the entire day, beginning after the information session. The specific time for your individual interview/portfolio review session is established through a sign-up process. Thirty minutes prior to the information session you will be

2 able to sign-up for your individual interview time. This sign-up will take place outside of the information session room. Interview/portfolio review Your individual interview/portfolio review session will help ensure that you are making an informed decision in choosing this program. The interview/portfolio review serves 2 purposes; 1) to allow you to become familiar with the APFM program, and, 2) to assess your strengths and attributes that would contribute to your potential for success in the APFM program. During your interview/portfolio review session, you will meet with a panel comprised of program faculty, college administration and current students of the APFM program. During this session, you will have the opportunity to present your strengths, interests, background and skills. Portfolio - material selection: The APFM program is unique in its breadth, combining aspects of design, business, construction and management of an architectural project. The portfolio should contain material that demonstrates breadth and variety, illustrating your potential for success in the program. For the APFM program the definition of the portfolio is rather inclusive. The portfolio should be an organized compilation of your academic, personal, and professional achievements and interests. The work presented should be of a quality that best represents your potential and capabilities. Use your selection of portfolio work to communicate the range of experiences, skills and aspirations, which have led you to consider this particular program and career path. The work should be formatted to ensure a professional and effective presentation of the material. In selecting your portfolio material you should consider how best to encapsulate your particular qualities and attributes. While not exclusive, the following is a range of considerations you should bring to your selection of portfolio material.

3 Writing The portfolio must include a sample of work demonstrating your writing skills. This piece is retained by Conestoga as part of your application package. Academics Some of the material in the portfolio should give a review of your academic achievements, highlighting material of special recognition as well as material that represents your ability to succeed in a Bachelor degree program. project work specifically noteworthy work achievements awards, honours activities group participation, sports teams, tutoring endeavours other activities extracurricular or otherwise Personal The portfolio should include aspects that communicate your interests outside of school or work. You should review your hobbies and other activities that could represent your breadth of interests and capabilities. volunteering participation community activities or groups interests travel, hobbies Creative/Technical The portfolio should include work from either courses or personal undertakings. Hobbies or other types of creative endeavours could also be included. Possible material to consider: drafting sketching painting photography sculpture video model making

4 Professional/business Some of the material of the portfolio may complement the applicant s resume. This section could highlight specific achievements or activities related to your work experience. The portfolio could expand upon personal or entrepreneurial undertakings. achievements description of work undertaken and responsibilities entrepreneurial undertakings Portfolio graphic presentation: The presentation of the portfolio material is important. A well-organized and formatted portfolio tells much about you as an individual and your skills in original and critical thought. The most effective means of displaying your work is to place the work in a presentation/display binder or portfolio that has individual inserts to hold the work. There is no specific format required by the APFM program but some recommendations are: Large format or physical work is best photographed and reproduced. When including 3- dimensional work, consider including a few images from various vantage points. Reports, certificates, awards: include the work in either binders or sheet protectors to enable distribution to the committee members as necessary. Portfolio oral presentation: As well as formatting the work into a professional looking portfolio, you should consider how you would discuss the work with an interview panel. The panel will be interested in how the work was completed, why the work was undertaken and what was learned in the process. The portfolio should be comprehensive yet succinct. The interview is 30 minutes in length and the portfolio review is only one component of the interview. Edit the portfolio so that it illustrates the best of your abilities and breadth of your interests. The portfolio needs to communicate a range of experiences, skills and aspirations, which have led you to consider the APFM program and its potential career paths.

5 Digital Portfolio Submission It is highly recommended that you attend the information session and individual interview/portfolio review session in person. However, we recognize that distance from the Conestoga campus may not make attendance possible. Applicants who are not able to attend the interview/portfolio review in person due to excessive distance are required to submit a digital portfolio and have an interview by phone or Skype. It is preferred that your digital portfolio be posted to a website and the web address provided. Alternatively, a pdf file (maximum 10 Mbytes) can be ed. A sample of writing, as a pdf file, must be provided by . After applying through OCAS and having received a letter of invitation to the information session and interview/portfolio review, you can request this type of interview/portfolio review session by contacting Colin McGugan, the APFM program coordinator, at cmcgugan@conestogac.on.ca. Additional Information for International Applicants International applicants must submit the on-line application, application fee and all transcripts to wwed@conestogac.on.ca in order to be assigned a student number and have their requirements assessed. It is recommended that International applicants who are within driving distance to Conestoga attend in person for the interview/portfolio review. Otherwise, requests for a digital portfolio submission and interview by phone or Skype will be made to the applicant from the International Office.
