1 DEI Distance Education Programme 1. Introduction The Distance Education Programme of DEI was launched in 2004 to extend the benefits of its high quality, innovative, and value based education system to all sections of society, in particular the weaker sections and women, in remote, backward and tribal areas in various parts of the country for their empowerment and economic development. Towards the fulfilment of this objective, a number of employment-oriented vocational programmes are offered in the distance mode with nominal fees. In addition to these, higher level programmes are also offered which help students from backward and tribal areas to join the mainstream. The Distance Education Council (DEC) of IGNOU has given recognition to the Distance Education Programme of DEI. On the recommendation of the Joint Committee of UGC-AICTE-DEC, approval has been accorded by DEC to a number of programmes for being conducted in the distance mode. The distance education programmes are offered at 85 Study Centres in India and 6 abroad. The programmes are backed by laboratories, workshops and state-of-the-art communication technology which include EDUSAT satellite-interactive terminals and POLYCOM based internet connectivity, providing a two-way interaction between the University and its Study Centres. The Distance Education Programme is based on a blended mode of education with a mix of traditional face-to-face interaction (3 hours per day and 6 days in a week) and e- education. Some of the programmes are taught via the synchronous on-line mode and some are web-based. Like the University, the distance education programme also follows the semester and credit system with continuous evaluation. A. These are the Cutting & Sewing and Office Assistant cum Computer Operator programmes which are designed to be in alignment with NCVT Curriculum and are close variants respectively of Dress Designing & Tailoring and Modern Office Management & secretarial Practice Programmes which are approved by the Joint Committee. It may also be noted that the Wireman and Electrician programmes of the two years duration are designed to be in alignment with NCVT curriculum. The joint Committee approval is for one year Wireman and Electrician programme. 6. DEI ICT Distance Education Centres The Institute has upgraded four Study Centres, where it now offers in synchronous mode, diploma, degree and higher level programmes to students admitted to DEI with flexibility of attending classes at multiple locations through state-of-the-art information communication technology (ICT). The DEI-ICT Distance Education Centres are located at: 1. Melathiruvekatanathpuram (MTV Puram), Tamil Nadu (a remote rural and backward area) 2. Rajaborari-Timarni (Harda District, MP, a tribal area) 3. Soami Nagar, New Delhi (near IIT Delhi) 4. Bangalore The students of the Distance Education Programme are treated at par with conventional mode students with respect to entitlement for awards, Institute medals, and admission via lateral entry from Certificate to Diploma programmes etc. 7. Admission Procedure Students can enrol for a course offered at a Study Centre by applying on prescribed form at the Study Centre. Students are advised to contact the specific Study Centres where they desire to take admission. The details of each Study Centre appear under the heading Details of Study Centres and Programmes offered at the Study Centres. The forms shall be available at the Study Centre and the last date of submission of forms at the Study Centre is 30 th June, The admission process starts from 1 st July, 2014 and the classes will start from 14 th July, All admissions are valid only after approval from DEI Head Office. The application form and other details regarding admission are available on the DEI Web site. Classes will start on July 14, 2014.

5 8. Continuous Evaluation System The semester-cum-continuous evaluation system is followed for all Certificate, UG Degree, Post Graduate Diploma and Post Graduate Degree Programmes. It is similar to the system for regular and modular programmes of the Institute. For details please refer to the Institute prospectus. 9. Placement assistance to students Placement Assistance is provided to those students who wish to take up job after successfully completing their course. Structure of DEP Placement Cell consists of a Central Coordinator (Distance Education Placement) at DEI-DEP Head Office and a suitable administrative structure with a Training & Placement Officer (TPO) at every Study Centre. For all the technical programmes, teams of experts having domain knowledge and understanding of the specific Industry are deputed to support the TPOs in each Region/ Zone. Job Fairs are conducted at some of these locations. Student from nearby Study Centres are invited to attend interview at the Job Fair where 20 to 40 companies visit and conduct interviews, just as they do at campus and hire large number of students. Students also get a chance to appear in multiple interviews if they do not qualify in one company.(every year 5 to 7 Job Fairs are being organized at different locations and approximately 600 students are offered jobs close to their hometowns.) Short term modular programmes enhance placement opportunities. 10.
