4 Role of First Aiders Injury Prevention First aid and injury management Call or arrange for someone to call 111 Provide life saving immediate CPR Report any serious injuries ARU and Club DO NOT ATTEMPT TO PROVIDE OR UNDERTAKE PROCEDURES THAT ARE OUTSIDE YOUR TRAINING

6 Player Assessment T - Talk O - Observe T - Touch A - Active P - Passive S - Skills

7 Talk How did it happen? Where does it hurt? How did you land? Did you hear any noises? What kind of pain? Any other questions you feel may be relevant

8 Observe Bones - Alignment, deformity or unusual shape Soft tissues - Swelling, shape and contours - Scrapes and cuts Colour - Redness, inflammation, pale or blue

9 Touch Be gentle and mindful of player comfort Do not drag player to their feet Touch away from injured area and move towards it Try to locate exact site and relate it to what is underneath

10 Active Ask player to move injured limb until restricted by pain - Significant restriction indicates serious injury Do not force them to carry out movement if they do not wish to!

11 Passive Only after active movement has been done by player Be gentle Do not force injured part at any stage Return to play should not be considered unless pain free and full range of movement is evident

12 Skills Ask player to stand unaided Ask player to walk, jog and carry out specific skills related to injured part Return if pain free

13 Head Injury / Concussion Trauma resulting in any disturbance of brain function Can occur at anytime post injury - Typical within hours

14 What you may see Dazed or stunned Lying motionless on ground/ slow to get up Unsteady on feet - balance problems Loss of consciousness or responsiveness Grabbing / clutching of head Seizures More emotional or irritable than normal - falling over - lack of co-ordination Confused/ not aware of plays or events

15 What you are told Headache Dizziness Feeling slowed down and confused Visual problems - Double vision / fuzzy Nausea and vomiting Fatigue Drowsiness and difficulty concentrating Pressure in head Sensitivity to light or noise Ringing in ears Balance problems

16 What questions to ask Which ground are we at? Which team are we playing? Which half is it? Who scored last? Did we win last week? Which team did we play last week?

17 If you suspect concussion or not sure... IMMEDIATELY REMOVE PLAYER FROM GAME If suspected neck injury- only to be moved by St Johns officers with spinal cares Injured player should not return to play until assessed medically- all to see a doctor! Everyone s responsibility to ensure that injured players are safely removed from play!

18 Rest the Body and Brain Corner stone of treatment is rest - Physical activities such as running, swimming etc. - Cognitive activities such as school work, homework, reading, television, video games, smart phones etc. Complete rest for minimum of 24 hours

19 Return to Play Medical clearance must be obtained prior to restarting activity Starship- graduated return (min 3 weeks) IRB- graduated return (more complex) ACC Sportsmart- 3 weeks Symptom free prior to restarting activity Back at school full time No longer taking pain killers IF IN DOUBT SIT THEN OUT

20 Starships Return To Sport Guide Week 1 1 week off sport and exercise Week 2 1 week doing light exercise (non-contact) Week 3 Increase your exercise then take part in a full contact session Week 4 Full contact training and then back to play IF ANY SYMPTOMS OF CONCUSSION RETURN - GO BACK TO WEEK 1

21 Neck Injuries - Anyone with a suspect neck injury - DO NOT MOVE PLAYER FROM FIELD - CALL Keep player calm and still - Keep parents calm - Await St Johns arrival and assessment of the situation

22 Boney Injuries Use common sense They are very painful Movement causes pain! Upper limbs (collar bone, shoulder, downwards) - Maybe safe to move from playing field with support Lower limbs (Pelvis and downwards) - Obvious deformity call 111- don t move - No deformity, may be safe to move if pain allows

23 General Soft Tissue Injury Management P - Protection R - Rest I - Iced C - Compression E - Elevation Avoid for 72 hours - H- Heat A- Alcohol R- Running M- Massage D - Diagnosis

24 Soft Tissue Injury Bruises, bumps, knocks and scratches - Water - Ice - Be gauged by player and your impression Lacerations/ cuts - Pressure - Self protection - Medical assessment

25 Soft Tissue Injury Ligaments, joints and dislocations - Water - Ice - Do not try and relocate - Medical assessment

26 Basic Life Support D - Dangers? R - Responsive? S - Send for help A - Open Airway B - Normal Breathing? C - Start CPR - 30 compressions : 2 breaths D - Attach Defibrillator (AED) as soon as possible and follow it s prompts Continue CPR until responsiveness or normal breathing return

27 Remember Do no further harm and be sensible Do not move players with suspected neck injuries Do not move unconscious players -111 Concussion is a very real problem - when in doubt sit them out Do not move players with obvious lower limb deformities or if too painful to do so Ice and water fixes most bumps and knocks

28 Each team should have a First Aid person. They should have medical training or have attended the First Aid Course. If your team has no trained First Aider, let your convenor know. For any serious injuries please fill in the ARU form on the following page.
