3 Taberna Libraria, in its customary vein of producing commemorative editions and celebrating such a salient centennial, has brought togeer, in a singular facsimile edition, e handwritten works of Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, which are scattered across various institutions, namely: e General Archive of Simancas, e National Historic Archive, e Municipal Archive of Carmona, e Spanish National Library, and e Rosenbach Museum Library of Philadelphia. Cervantes was fond of writing letters. This is accredited by Antonio de Guevara, in a reply sent by letter on 20 October 1588: I have received all of e letters sent by you, and have not answered em for lack of It is a pity erefore at today we only conserve minute traces of such an extensive epistolary output. Besides faiful facsimile reproductions of all of e holographic documents, a separate volume features, for e first time, a complete palaeographic, orographic and graphic-characterological study of e writing of Cervantes, also publishing e most famous falsifications, supervised by eminent specialists. Miguel de Cervantes was a man of his day, one of e many men of e Spanish Golden Age who was a soldier as well as a man of letters, a man who, in spite of his fame in e latter years of his life, left behind mere documentary traces over a hundred signatures at e bottom of all types of documents and a handful of handwritten papers. This testimonial scarcity and e greatness of his figure as e centuries went by gave rise to a small industry of autographs in which his life is remembered, e life he left written in e pages of his books, e life at never came to light in e texts penned by his own hand. 7 Orography, as e social usage at it is, reveals many ings about individuals: e education ey received, eir care and oroughness, allegiance to a given school of grammar (several books of orographic rules had been published in e Golden Age, some of which prescribed revolutionary changes), etc. As a result, e study of Cervantes' handwritten works is bound to be extremely useful also to shed light on a number of issues which as of today still remain a matter of debate (his orographic consistency, how he solved e use of groups of consonants, etc.). It has normally been contended at Cervantes was quite careless in is particular; only a comprehensive analysis of e testimonies brought down to us can settle e discussion definitively. It is not a trivial matter for any writer, even less so in our most universally known auor. Graphology is e scientific technique at studies personality by analysing e graphical gesture, discovering features of character and conduct, intellectual abilities, volitional and motivational qualities, living skills and attitudes, and also e emotions of e human being, at e time of writing. Through graphology we can see Cervantes 'naked', to get to know e very person of e writer, at great unknown. How did he ink? What were his strengs and weaknesses? What did e auor of Don Quixote feel? What impassioned him? Each one of e twelve handwritten works present herein tells us what Cervantes was like, in his entirety and in each of e stages of his life when he penned em, ranging from e ages of irty-four to fifty-six. It is likewise fascinating to discover, rough graphology, e emotional factor in each of e handwritten works, as well as e evolution of his writing, from e younger Cervantes to e famous auor of Don Quixote. In summary, we have embarked on a voyage towards e discovery of e intimate personality of Cervantes, well beyond e universal writer known to all.
