My name is Antoine McKnight and I am your instructor for this class. I have over 30 years as professional firefighter and I am currently a Battalion Chief. I am looking forward to facilitating a positive learning environment. This is an ONLINE Class utilizing Etudes and I encourage everyone to utilize the Discussion and Private Messages tab (located on the left of your screen) to share experience and or knowledge for the benefit of the entire class. NOTE: If you don t have Internet access at home, there are computer labs on campus. DO NOT WAIT until the last minute to complete assignments. 2 Course Description: This course provides an overview of a career in fire protection and related fields. The philosophy and history of fire protection/service; fire loss analysis; organization and function of public and private fire protection services; fire departments as part of local government; laws and regulations affecting the fire service; fire service nomenclature; specific fire protection functions; basic fire chemistry and physics will be discussed. Included will be the preparation of a resume, oral examination practice sessions and discussions regarding physical, medical and background examinations as required for employment. This on-line course using the Etudes system allows you the opportunity to take college courses and conduct your studies around your own personal schedule. This course is one of the 6 required core classes for the Fire Technology Degree. The goals and objectives for the course as well as the course content has been approved State-wide for fire fighters by the California State College Chancellor's and the Office the California State Fire Marshal as well as the National Fire Higher Education Committee and the West Los Angeles college committee. Required Texts Introduction to Fire Protection and Emergency Services- Fifth Edition, Robert Klinoff - Jones & Bartlett Publishers, 2015 ISBN: Reference Materials Reference: materials: NFPA Handbook, National Fire Protection Associat Student Learning Outcomes (SLO) 1. Describe the NFPA Standards for the position of fire fighter I. 2. Describe the components of the duties of the fire fighter position. 3. Compare and contrast the difference between a structural fire fighter, wildland fire fighter and aircraft fire fighter. 4. Demonstrate the ability to recall the four stages of a fire including the three events that may occur, if proper ventilation procedures are not conducted. 5. Demonstrate an awareness of cultural diversity.
3 ASSESSMENT OF STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES Students will be given short answer essay questions, fill-in questions, and a series of multi-choice questions. Students will make oral presentations on research topics. Students will describe the duties and standards for the position of fire fighter, fire dispatcher and fire inspector and other related positions in the fire protection industry. Students will discuss in class all aspects of the fire fighter position including fire station duties, fire prevention activities and training activities. Students will discuss in class the NFPA testing, standards and specifications for fire fighter I certification. On-line students will present their presentation on line at the time agreed upon with the instructor. Students will understand and explain the difference between the fire code, zoning codes, building codes and other codes to be enforced the fire station level of inspection. Course Requirements and assignment guidelines Written Assignments There are five (5) written assignments that must be completed as per the schedule. You will find them under Discussion and Private Messages tab on etudes. Each question is worth 10 points and must be answered according to the date schedule. Be concise as possible however; make sure you completely answer the question. Pay attention to the due dates for each question. Quizzes There are 14 multiple choice quizzes for this course, one for each chapter of the book. You will find these quizzes under the Assignments, Test, and Surveys tab on the left hand side when you log into Etudes. Complete the first 7 exercises before attempting the mid-term examination. Each quiz is worth 10 points Mid-Term The mid-term will have 50 randomly selected questions from the information found in the first 7 chapters of the textbook. Final Exam The Final will cover all 14 chapters of the textbook. There are 100 multiple-choice questions. Each questions is worth 1 point for a total of 100 points possible for the final exam
4 Late Assignments Any late assignment will be penalized.25%. Grading Assignment Category # of Assign. 5 Class Policies Assessment of Student learning outcomes: Some or the entire above course objectives may be used as a measure or assessment of student retention of course materials for this course. One or more of the 5 written assignment questions may be selected to be used to assess student success in this course or may be found in one of more of the multiple choice questions found in this course. Written examinations will be used to test on one or more expected student learning outcomes above. Questions have been selected to serve as the assessment tool for this class. You must obtain a grade of 80 % or better on the selected questions. All entries into Etudes are recorded and used as your attendance record. Students not making entries into etudes during the first three weeks of class will be dropped from the class. Contacting Me is the best and quickest way to contact me. If you have a problem, do not let it snowball. Contact me immediately. Students are expected to ask questions and obtain help from instructor via and/or during office hours. College Policies: Academic Integrity (Plagiarism) In accordance with code , academic dishonesty is prohibited and will not be tolerated in this class. Violations of academic integrity include, but are not limited to, the following actions: cheating on an exam, plagiarism, working together on an assignment, paper or project when the instructor has specifically stated students should not do so, submitting the same term paper to more than one instructor, or allowing another individual to assume one s identity for the purpose of enhancing one s grade. Academic dishonesty of any type, such as cheating or knowingly furnishing false information, by a student provides grounds for disciplinary action by the instructor or college. In written work, no material may be copied from another without proper quotation marks, footnotes, or appropriate documentation. Plagiarism will result in a zero for the assignment, possible dismissal from the class and disciplinary action from the college. You will not receive credit for any essay missing previous drafts, citations and/or a Works Cited page. Student Conduct According to code , disruption of classes or college activities is prohibited and will not be tolerated. Refer to the catalog and the Standards of Student Conduct in the Schedule of Classes for more information.
6 Recording Devices State law in California prohibits the use of any electronic listening or recording device in a classroom without prior consent of the instructor and college administration. Any student who needs to use electronic aids must secure the consent of the instructor. If the instructor agrees to the request, a notice of consent must be forwarded to the Vice President of Academic Affairs for approval (WLAC College Catalog).
