Introduction of REAP In , the government allowed rice export also by the private sector. Before this, the Rice Export Corporation of Pakistan (RECP) was exclusively handling rice export of Pakistan. The private sector rice trade comprised mainly of rice dealers, sellers and growers. After rice exports were allowed to the private sector, a new body of people emerged in the shape of rice exporters. In , REAP became a registered body with the Director Trade Organization, Ministry of Commerce. Also in , membership of REAP became compulsory for all rice exporters. Now the membership of REAP is in the region of around 1800 members spread all over Pakistan. The Office Bearers and Members of Managing Committee of REAP are constantly working for improvement in Pakistan's quality of rice and introduction of new varieties both in Sindh and Punjab. 3

organic rice Organic rice is grown using natural and not chemical fertilizers, which are harmful to health and environment as well. However, producing organic rice is much more than just using natural or organic fertilizers. Benefits of organic rice: 1. Free from chemical, 2. Organic rice is fat free and has high carbohydrate content. 3. Red and brown rice have higher fiber value than white rice. 4. Organic rice has low sugar content 5. When you eat 45 grams of organic rice, you only consume 160 calories of carbohydrates.
Organic Seed production: Organic systems avoid the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, and growth regulators. Instead they rely on crop rotations,, biological pest control maintain soil health, supply plant nutrients, minimize insects, weeds, and other pests. Weed Suppression Weed control and soil fertility are the principal challenges associated with organic rice production. primary weed-control practices include crop rotations, land leveling, seedbed preparation, water management, rotary hoeing. 10
Soil Fertility Maintaining soil fertility in organic cropping typically involves some combination of crop rotation with deep-rooted legume crops or green manure/cover crops, applying animal manures, composts, and other approved organic amendments. Nitrogen is usually provided through thegrowing of legume cover crops. Bone meal is a good source of cheap phosphorus (with a content of around 12%). Rice straw and manure are good sources of potassium Organic manure Organic Manures obtained either from cattle or plants. Use of organic manures by farmers is an age-old practice in agriculture. Organic manure's maintains better structure of soil 11

Rice Milk 6. Rice Pudding 7. Rice Starch 8. Rice Straw 9. Rice used in Beverage Making 10. Rice Paper 11. Rice Glue 12. Rice Cakes (mochi) 13. Rice Vinegar 14. Rice Soy Milk 15. Red Yeast Rice 16. Rice based food products
Value Addition in Rice & Its By-Products Bran Oil: Rice bran oil is the oil extracted from the germ and inner husk of rice. It is notable for its very high smoke point of 490 F (254 C) and its mild flavor, making it suitable for high-temperature cooking methods such as stir frying and deep frying. It is popular as a cooking oil in several Asian countries i.e India, including Japan and China Rice bran oil contains a range of fats, with 47% of its fats monounsaturated, 33% polyunsaturated, and 20% saturated Fatty acid composition of rice bran oil: Palmitic15.0% Stearic1.9% Oleic42.5% Linoleic39.1% Linolenic1.1% Arachidic0.5% Behenic0.2%
Benefits & Uses of Rice Bran Oil: Frying Pure rice bran oil, exhibits excellent frying performance and contributes a pleasant flavor to the fried food. It possesses good storage stability and fry life without hydrogenation. These properties make it a premium choice for frying upscale products with delicate flavors. Most Japanese restaurants in the USA have now switched to Rice Bran Oil for their Tempura Frying Oil because of its superior performance in this special application. General frying applications, ranging from French fries to chicken, rice bran oil exhibits excellent taste and texture. Since hydrogenation isn't required for stability, it is a natural high-quality liquid frying oil that is also free of trans-fatty acids. Stir-Frying Rice Bran Oil is also a great choice for use in stir-frying. While its delicate, nut-like character complements the natural flavor of stir-fried meats, seafoods and vegetables, it never overpowers them. A further advantage is its natural resistance to smoking at high frying temperatures. Not surprisingly, rice bran oil has quickly become the oil of choice by many high-end Asian-American restaurants. Salad Dressing Rice Bran Oil has a light, barely perceptible flavor, making it wonderful to use with gourmet vinegars and spices. The oil emulsifies easily, so dressings don't separate. 15
Benefits & Uses of Rice Bran Oil: Baking Because of rice oil's light flavor, it has found favor in baking applications. Brownies and other baked goods made with rice oil turn out light and delicious. Baking sheets and cake pans coated with rice oil allow the baked goods to come out of the pan or off the cookie sheet with no trouble at all. Soap Manufacturing Rice Bran Oil has a long and successful history in Japan as a base for soaps and skin creams. The oil is purported to reverse the effect of aging by slowing the formation of facial wrinkles thanks to rice bran oil's rich concentration of Vitamin E and gamma-oryzanol. In Japan, women who use rice bran oil on their skin are known as 'rice bran beauties'. In the US, rice oil has gained a strong and loyal following with soap manufacturers and artisans. 16
Feasibility regarding Value Addition and By-Products in Pakistan Extraction of Oil from Paddy bran, one of the main by products of the rice milling industry. In first phase if we successfully install more than 20 Bran Oil producing plant nearest to rice mills, the project will initially yield an annual income of between Million UD. Dollars to Millions US. Dollars. Particularly in this project if the Government to give incentives to Rice Millers in connection with Duty Free import of such Plant, definitely we can save the heavy foreign exchanger incurred on import of cooking oil from abroad. In the recent past during the visit of His Excellency, President of Pakistan visit to Japan, besides the others Mr. Irfan Ahmed Sheikh, Chairman REAP were also part of the said delegation and regarding Bran Oil Japanese has shown their interest to provide facility of bran oil refining to make it suitable for human consumption. Initially, the oil would have to be exported to Japan for refining and value addition. 17
Feasibility regarding Value Addition and By-Products in Pakistan REAP is also planning to send a delegation in India headed by Chief Executive TDAP, Mr. Tariq Iqbal Puri, along with Chairman REAP and REAP Members for the purchase of Rice Bran Oil Plant almost Ten REAP Members are ready to purchase the said machinery and install it in Pakistan where as for the production of Bran Oil. It is very healthy sign and concrete step by REAP Members in the progress of over all industry which would be helpful for economic stability of Pakistan. It is reported that there will be a buy back arrangement with Japan. They will import the bran oil produced by Pakistani Mills for two to three years. If the Government help Rice Industry, there are certain things can be made from Pakistani rice varieties can be used for the purpose of processed food material such as fomented soybean paste, distilled spirit, snacks made from rice. Establishing by product industries for China: In a move to capture large share from China s global import, REAP is looking for financial assistance and guidance to Rice Exporters for establishing by-product industries in Pakistan for China. 18
SUGGESTIONS/ CONCLUSION: The Promotion and production of By-Products is the need of the day and we should take concrete steps in this connection. We can earn huge Foreign Exchange from Value Addition in Rice and its By-Products. Govt. should also take measure and give incentives to Rice Millers in connection with duty Free import of such plants. Pakistani Mission should come forward and give feedback the trend of trade in the country in which they are posted. 19
