Global Demand for Food Grows In a world where population is expanding and the demand for food is increasing, chia is a game changing agricultural crop. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) estimates the world will have to produce 70% more food by 2050 to feed a projected extra 2.3 billion people. Chia will be an essential part of the human diet. Chia Uses & Applications Chia can be consumed in a variety of ways. It can be eaten directly as whole seeds, ground seeds, bran, flour and oil, or used in commercial food applications including mixed into bottled beverages, breads and baked goods, breakfast cereals and nutrition bars, pasta and dairy. It can also be used in cosmetic and skin care products (the essential oils), and animal feed to enrich poultry, eggs, beef, milk and pork. 3 All About Chia Chia Description & Production Chia (Salvia hispanica L.) is a species of flowering plant in the mint family (Lamiaceae) native to central and southern Mexico and Guatemala. The Chia plant is an annual herb growing to 1.5m tall; it produces purple and white flowers with seeds growing in clusters in a spike at end of each stem. Chia seeds are oval-shaped, 1mm in diameter, with color varying from brown, grey, black, and white. Chia is an edible oilseed, the richest plant-based source of Omega-3 alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), with more protein, fiber, and antioxidants but fewer carbohydrates than rice, wheat, corn, barley, or oats, and an excellent source of calcium, magnesium, potassium, phosphorous, iron, zinc, and copper. It is low in sodium, gluten free, non- GMO, kosher, vegan, non-allergenic, and can be stored for years with no deterioration. Chia is the richest plant-based source of Omega 3, protein, fiber and antioxidants Chia can be grown commercially around the world in tropical and sub-tropical regions within 23 degrees of the equator where the photoperiod (daylight) is less than 13.5 hours. Grown closer to the equator increases seed oil content and shortens seed-to-harvest period, allowing for double and triple crops. Chia plants mature faster at lower elevations on rich, fertilized soil with good irrigation. Chia farming costs and methods are similar to soybeans, allowing for mechanical seeding, weeding, and harvesting, with yields of between 1,000 kg and 2,000 kg per hectare. Chia Consumption & Applications Chia was a major crop of the Aztecs, a staple food alongside corn and beans; after hundreds of years of disuse after the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire, chia is experiencing a renaissance, with a five-fold growth in consumer demand in Pure Chia follows rigorous guidelines and principles based on sustainable agriculture methods Chia falls primarily into two food industry sectors: functional foods and nutraceuticals. Functional foods are foods, ingredients or products that contain specific medicinal or physiological benefits over and above that of just nutrition, while nutraceuticals are products purified from foods that contain medicinal or physiological benefits in supplement or dosage form. Chia can be used by consumers as whole seeds, ground seeds, meal, bran, flour, and oil, which they can eat directly or mix into water, juices, cereals, salads and recipes, or taken in concentrated pill and powder form. Chia can be used for commercial food applications including bread and baked goods, breakfast cereals and bars, beverages, pasta, and dairy, without altering flavour. Chia can also be used in the animal feed industry to enrich poultry, eggs, beef, milk, and pork with Omega-3 s, in the pet food industry to improve nutrition, in the cosmetics and skin care industry as an essential oil, in the pesticide industry as a natural insecticide, and in the energy sector where chia biomass can be used in ethanol production.
