4 The Plan This plan sets out how we plan to make our services accessible and fair to all people in Southampton What is Equality all about? Equality means being fair to everyone. Equality is about protecting people s rights and making sure everyone is treated fairly. Diversity means that everyone is different and our community is made up of lots of different types of people, who come from different places. 4
5 The Equality Act 2010 The law says we should do more to make things fairer for different sorts of people, and help people to understand equality and human rights better. Under this law we have to:- Make sure that there is no discrimination, harassment or victimisation. Discrimination means being unfair to someone because of their race, religion or beliefs, disability, gender, sexual orientation or age. Harassment means being bullied. Victimisation means being picked on. 5
6 Help all people to have the same chances. Encourage everyone to get along so fewer people are bullied. Give out information every year about how well we are doing this. 6
7 The Human Rights Act 1998 This is another important law. We want to be sure we obey the law. There are five principles of human rights in this Act:- 1. Fairness 2. Respect 3. Equality 4. Dignity 5. Autonomy (being independent) These are known as the FREDA principles 7
8 This Equality Plan talks about how we are going to do what the Equality Act 2010 and Human Rights Act 1998 say. This Plan says how we are going to protect people from unfair treatment. It will include how we buy (commission) and provide services. We will use this plan to make sure that we include the needs and views of everyone in Southampton to make things better for everyone. We know there is a lot to do. Our Aims: Our aim is to make sure patients, carers and staff: 1. Do not suffer any discrimination 8
9 2. Are treated with dignity and respect 3. Are involved in discussions and decisions about their healthcare. 4. Have the right to accept or refuse care and treatment. 9
10 5. Are involved in planning healthcare services Discrimination Some people are discriminated against. This means they are not treated fairly and equally 10
11 People can get treated unfairly for a lot of reasons. 9 are talked about here and are called the 9 Protected Characteristics. 1. Age This means people of all different ages. 2. Disability People sometimes say they have a disability if they find it harder to do everyday things. Sometimes this can be physical (perhaps they use a wheelchair or can t see well); sometimes they have a learning disability or mental health issue. 11
12 3. Gender reassignment (Transgender) There are people who are born as a boy physically but feel inside they are more like a girl. Or, they may be born as a girl but feel inside they are more like a boy With treatment and operations a man or a woman can change their gender. 4. Marriage and Civil Partnership People can get married, or if they are the same sex, have a civil partnership. 5. Pregnancy and Maternity Pregnancy is when a woman is expecting a baby and Maternity is after she has had the baby. 12
13 6. Race This is when people are defined by race, ethnic group, colour or nationality (including citizenship) and national origins. Everyone belongs to an ethnic group 7.Religion or Belief Everyone has the right to choose and follow the religion or faith they want to believe in. 13
14 8. Sex (Gender) This is about whether you are a woman and a man, a girl or a boy. 9. Sexual orientation This is when a person is attracted towards their own sex, opposite sex or both sexes. This is known as being gay, lesbian or bi-sexual or straight. 14
15 What we will do: We will talk to the communities, individuals and carers to find out what they think. And involve them when we make plans Our Governing Board will make sure that we follow the Equality Plan and that all our staff know and understand what they have to do to make this Plan a reality. 15
16 We all need to work together to understand and think about equality, diversity and Human rights in everything we do. We will train our staff to make sure they think about all these things for themselves and for the people we buy services for. 16
17 We will change the plan when we learn something new. 17
18 Southampton City Clinical Commissioning Group (SCCCG) Plan for The Plan NHS Southampton City CCG started in 2013 and has the responsibility for: a. Providing health services to the people of Southampton, and b. Promoting good health and well-being for everyone This strategy is the first step in planning how we will stay true to the Equality Act 2010 Public Sector Duties and make sure people s human rights are protected. 18
19 We will also make sure that everyone is able to see this plan and tell us what they think. Improving health in Southampton: Southampton has some real health challenges. These are some of them: We want to support people to stop smoking 19
20 We want to promote healthy eating We want to help people get active 20
21 We want to help people to avoid diseases like heart disease, diabetes, strokes and cancer We want more people to take up cancer screening 21
22 Our Focus: Provide the best healthcare for the people of Southampton 22
23 Listen to you and involve you in your care Help to give babies the best start in life as this helps good health later in life 23
24 Help people to keep in good health as they grow older 24
25 How we will make sure that Equality does happen! 1. We will support people from the 9 Protected Characteristics to get the best quality care. This will reduce the differences or inequalities 2. We will collect information from the many different people and their carers who are using our services 25
26 3. We will also collect information from our systems to check who is using our services so we can make sure all 9 Protected Groups are accessing them 4. We will collect information from our all our staff. This will help us as an employer to make sure we promote equality for all our staff 26
