3 Professional Triathlete Chris Big Sexy McDonald validates RCS designs in the A2 Wind Tunnel Reynolds Composite Studio (RCS) Here at Reynolds Cycling, the hard work happens in the Reynolds Composite Studio, where our team of talented and dedicated engineers collaborates on the innovative and painstaking designs used in Reynolds Cycling wheels. There s literally a rocket scientist at the helm of RCS, and he s an ex-pro triathlete to boot. His name is Paul Lew, and when he s not designing unmanned aircraft for the United States Department of Defense, he s registering another patent, analyzing computational fluid dynamics data, or visiting the A2 Wind Tunnel in North Carolina. Reynolds Composite Studio Paul Lew pioneered the use of unidirectional carbon fiber technology in bicycle rims, breaking ground for the entire carbon wheel industry. His designs, molds, tooling, production techniques, and testing protocols create the soul of the Reynolds Composite Studio. Alongside of Lew is a group of creative and brilliant engineers who pour their passion for the ride into every aspect of wheel design and testing. 4 Reynolds Technology Aerodynamic Technology Dispersive Effect Termination (DET ) DET stands for Dispersive Effect Termination. It is a V-shaped rim design that smoothes turbulent, energized airflow and re-attaches it to the aerodynamic surface, effectively reducing aerodynamic drag. This new shape also provides significant improvement in handling. DET shifts the center of pressure further forward of the center of mass (or hub/axle center), which creates a more stable steering force. With DET the side force associated with a crosswind is constant over a wider range of crosswind angles. Translation: predictable steering with superb handling. With DET, the engineers of the Reynolds Composite Studio (RCS) challenged the popular perception that turbulence in the boundary layer of a bicycle rim is beneficial. Through complex Computational Fluid Dynamics modeling, the RCS created a rim that optimally manages turbulence and generates forward thrust. Testing in the A2 Wind Tunnel in Mooresville, NC in March, 2012 validated the superiority of DET, demonstrating that it offered lower minimum drag and a significantly larger yaw performance range. DET, Technology offers an aerodynamic advantage, better ride quality, improved handling, and increased lateral stiffness. 10 Reynolds Technology Aerodynamic Technology Swirl Lip Generator (SLG) SLG stands for Swirl Lip Generator. It is.9mm lip placed on the leading edge of the rim to widen it near the spoke face and minimize pressure drag. Testing in the A2 Wind Tunnel in Mooresville, NC demonstrated that the Swirl Lip Generator reduces drag so effectively, that the time savings over a distance of 40km is 12.5 seconds. SLG effectively helps turbulent air passing over the wheel to re-attach to the spoke face after flowing over the spinning rim. 19 Reynolds Technology The Reynolds Composite Studio has pioneered innovation in carbon fiber sourcing, laminate selection, resin chemistry, compaction method, rim design, and braking. Please refer to the following icons throughout the catalog. Reynolds Carbon Technology We are uncompromising in our selection of the highest quality carbon fiber in fact, most companies order theirs off the shelf, but ours is made to order in Japan, per our specifications. And we use different carbon fiber lay-ups for optimal tensile strength, stiffness, and elongation in each region of our wheels. HML stands for (Hybrid Modulus Laminate) It is a precise method of assigning different carbon fiber and lay-ups to each region of the rim. VRC stands for (Variable Resin Chemistry) It is the application of a specific chemical formula of resin, optimally corresponding to different laminates within the rim. Braking Technology Reynolds Technology Cryogenic Glass Transition (CTg) Braking System CTg stands for Cryogenic Glass Transition. It refers to a patented braking system developed by Reynolds. The system is comprised of two components: Reynolds' proprietary Cryo-Blue urethane polymer brake pads and hybrid carbon-fiber-and-resin laminates in the brake track. The integrated CTg system effectively minimizes heat build-up from pad-to-rim friction and dissapates heat away from the brake track providing smoother, more predictable braking that delivers the best possible stopping performance. With CTg, braking temperatures are 100*F (38*C) cooler than with other technologies. Wheel Technology IGC stands for (Inert Gas Compaction) It is the use of inert gas compound to mold and cure rims. IGC ensures a more durable rim, born from ideal manufacturing conditions. Our 2013 Road and Aero Wheels are based on the following rim designs: Competitive Rim 6 (CR6) The CR6 Rim Design identifies six unique areas of the rim and assigns a specific carbon fiber and epoxy formula to each. Performance Rim 3 (PR3) The PR3 Rim Design identifies three unique areas of the rim and assigns a specific carbon fiber and epoxy formula to each. Braking Technology Brake Wear Indicator (BWI) BWI stands for (Brake Wear Indicator) It is a 10 mm wide red line that Reynolds embeds into the brake track. The indicator, centered over the valve hole on both sides of the rim, becomes visible when excessive wear has occurred to indicate that the wheel needs replacing. Reynolds is the only carbon wheel to offer this feature, and a patent is pending for its design. 20 2013 Jersey / Bibs The Reynolds Assurance Program RAP stands for Reynolds Assurance Program ; however, it also stands for Reynolds Aggressive Protection, and indeed, that s what it is. RAP shouldn t be confused with our standard Two Year Warranty. We manufacture excellent wheels from the highest quality materials, and of course, we back every one with our Warranty. RAP is more than a warranty. It s an accident protection plan. With RAP, wheels that become damaged during regular, intended use are simply sent to the Reynolds Technical Department for repair or replacement. No Questions Asked. ACCESSORIES Accessories Carbon Water Bottle Cage RAP is available only on wheel sets from Authorized Dealers, and it lasts for two entire years of coverage.
