1 Major Event Integrated Production Workflow HBS & EVS Celebrate a Decade of Innovative Sport Broadcasting Collaboration Within the last 10 years both companies have greatly EVS and HBS work closely to provide the sports broadcast contributed to improving the quality of broadcasting major market with technological solutions that answer the most sport events. HBS - a wholly-owned subsidiary of Infront demanding requirements during live broadcast operations. Sports & Media - has inspired dramatic changes in the way The Media Server developed by EVS and introduced by HBS the host broadcast of major sporting events is handled and at the 2006 FIFA World Cup for instance, was the first of has emerged as an industry leader in this specialised field. its kind and set a new industry standard in terms of reliability, EVS Broadcast Equipment revolutionized live broadcasting connectivity, and speed. Today EVS and HBS are still looking with its innovative Live Slow Motion system. The company ahead together with the aim of creating better content, at a that specializes in the design and the manufacturing of faster pace, and with more efficiency. hardware and software solutions invigorates live sport and studio productions with its Instant Tapeless Technology across the globe. The long term collaboration between the host broadcast specialist and the manufacturer of novel and reliable tapeless technologies has led to drastic changes and significant enhancements in the way major sporting events are brought to viewers worldwide.
2 Major Event Integrated Production Workflow From Ingest to Playout Outside Broadcasting In order to guarantee the best of every action, major broadcasters have drastically increased the number of cameras employed for the production of live football matches. While traditional league matches are shot with an average of 12 to 18 cameras major events, such as the FIFA World Cup are tracked with no less than 34 cameras. In addition to standard cameras that record 25 frames per second, Host Broadcasters also use a series of Super-Motion cameras, which record 2 or 3 times more pictures per second than your average camera.the objective is to offer higher quality and slow-motion replays with increased accuracy. For example, a clip recorded at 75 frames per second will be replayed at 33 % speed to obtain a very smooth slow-motion replay clip at 25 images per second. Controllers Remote controllers and their associated control programs can quickly edit multi-camera feeds, review them, instantly replay at variable speeds, or clip to highlight any important play phase. Several graphic tools are offered in these controllers to allow quick analysis: the offside line creator which automatically recognizes the limits of the playing field and allows the operator to draw an offside line, magnifying zones, and special zones that follow players. In order to insure the production of live replays, slow-motion action replays, highlights and closers during a live football match, all cameras are recorded by video production servers placed in Outside Broadcast facilities (OB Vans) located nearby the stadium during the event. The following technologies are placed in the vans for live productions: Video Production Servers Servers ingest all of the incoming camera feeds continuously, so that not a single shot is missed. Each server can simultaneously ingest and control multiple feeds, synchronize them, store or stream them, or send the content for further use (e.g. playout, post-production). All servers are ganged together via the production network allowing any field from any server to be instantly reviewed, replayed or sent from any other networked server. Each server is connected to two separate networks: the production network which connects the machines together and a gigabit network which links the production servers to classical Ethernet networks. Obviously, the servers have to be reliable with a very high level of redundancy and fault-tolerance, insuring that no failure can interrupt the workflow. XT[2] production server allows to record, control, and play media easily, quickly, and intelligently. Developed for the fast-paced environment of sports production, the XT[2] has become a field-proven server for the most demanding workflows. The XT[2] offers ingest up to 6 video channels, in any IN/OUT configuration, from any source, made instantly available for playback, live editing or for transfer to postproduction. It offers loop recording process, instant response, native supports of multi formats and codecs and is fully scalable, expandable and upgradeable.
3 On-the-Fly Editors Muticam[LSM] provides the most reactive and sensitive live editing solutions for sports. In addition to its world renowned replay mode function slow-motion and super-motion, Multicam[LSM] offers a range of on-the-fly editing actions, relied upon each day by broadcasters around the world. Even if OBVans have to be very reactive and live oriented, viewers today are expecting many add-ons from broadcasters: playouts need to be embellished with images, graphics, transition effects, comments, titles, or scores. Instant contribution software and on-the-fly editing programs are used to supply live highlights, title generators, key and fill, graphical tools, graphic insertions. All these tools have to be very reactive to provide graphic effects on-the-fly. It offers instant review of all camera angles for easy clip creation and replays at variable speeds, efficient live editing functions for highlights and built-in effects such as the new virtual offside line graphic. 4 The International Broadcast Server To expand broadcasters creative capabilities during major sporting events, such as the FIFA World Cup, HBS introduced the EVS Media Server in 2006 during the FIFA World Cup, offering the HBS production team as well as Media Licensees 24/7 access to all the recorded media, including the director s cut, multiple camera angles, and best shots (live slow-motion, highlights) for instant production and postproduction operations. The Media Server is a fully integrated cluster of EVS production servers. Built on EVS instant tapeless technology the media server combines hardware and software solutions optimized to manage exchange and distribution with the highest level of speed and reliability, including media indexing (based on intelligent logging systems) of all incoming feeds; content archiving; and the set-up of a media sharing network. Content Browsing and Control Producers and editors can browse through all of the content available on the media server using EVS IPDirector software, which features a keyword grid, clip preview, search engine, and other tools for pre-cut and preview purposes. The Host Broadcast team and MRLs have the capability to access feeds on the media server, while the content is fully monitored and permanently logged. As soon as the information is stored on the central media server, the producers, directors, editors and other personnel are able to browse, select and choose material from the server, quickly and easily by using IPDirector. Content can then be assembled, organized in playlists, re-clipped if needed, completed with voice-over, and searched for further use, such as playout, post-production, highlights, recaps, and archiving. These programs are always highly interconnected to allow content to be used instantly and simultaneously anywhere. The Media Server is composed of : Logging Programs All the media and clips are reviewed and linked to pre-defined or definable metadata by loggers. The descriptive metadata will be used by editors, contributors, commentators or reviewers to search instantly for content with comprehensive keywords (free kicks, goals, names of players, ). The metadata will also be used to send selected media to several zones : long-term archives or new media such as the Internet or mobile phones. This integrated suite of video production management applications gives total control of production and allows to easily ingest, log, manage, search, track, edit, create clips and highlights, browse, and ultimately playout any video or audio content instantly. Its logging interface and central metadata database have been used in any big last sport events (FIFA World Cup, Olympics ).
5 Major Event Integrated Production Workflow Near-Line Storage Here one can find all of the archived content related to a match (previous matches, player recaps, and special highlights) that can be mixed with live content to enrich highlights. As a central actor of the entire workflow, the Media Server will exchange all its enriched content with several zones. Metadata and clips, which are linked together, are sent to : Playout Zones Usually located at the TV stations across the globe, linked to the Media Server by satellite lines, these zones ensure the delivery to final users: home viewers or mobile devices such as i-phones, mobile phones, or browsing PCs. The delivered content is selected through searchable keywords that follow specific criteria. EVS Media Archive Director is designed to maximize the archive management process, to easily and rapidly access them, and to instantly and simultaneously deliver content on multi platforms with a central management interface. The concept is to offer a set of software tools to manage all platforms of the workflows centrally, including their formats, and allow for intelligent media browsing based on metadata and logging. It provides intuitive control of robots, easy automated access to any content, fast and reliable content delivery and optimized management of archive content. Long-Term Archives All media from a match are kept in this zone to ensure long-term storage for further use. Some programs, such as EVS Media Archive Director, can make all content available to third-parties for further consultation or delivery. Referees, clubs, officials, broadcasters, TV-on-demand, CD producers, may express the need to access or buy the event s content. These programs ensure the accessibility and delivery by the searchable metadata in automated ways with previous viewing in lo-res and deliver content in several forms: tape, CD, blue-ray, Internet browsing, or direct streaming. Remote Contribution Interfaces Major broadcasters are increasingly sending less journalists to events, preferring to give them access to content via Internet. People can access Media Server content, review it and even contribute by making new clips or new playlists in lo-res. The result can be downloaded in hi-res or instantly sent to postproduction or to playout. XT[2]Web is a combined web and broadcast solution that offer fast and easy access to clips and associated metadata. It enlarges the production scope of EVS production systems, making content, including unseen camera angles, exclusive clips, and feeds, immediately available through a web solution
