3 Indian River Virtual Instruction Programs Procedures School District of Indian River County offers eligible students full and part-time virtual school options each school year. All programs were created in accordance with Florida Statutes to provide our students with high quality instruction in an online environment. We offer solutions for students enrolled in public school, private school or home education. Our Program: The School District of Indian River County offers two virtual school options each school year; the Indian River Virtual School (IR Virtual School), Indian River Virtual (IR Virtual). All programs were created in accordance with applicable Florida Statutes. IR Virtual School (Indian River Virtual School) was created in 2016 in accordance with s of the Florida Statutes. IRVS is a fully online program for students in grades k-12. IRVS is a Full Time virtual school utilize Florida Department of Education approved virtual providers. IR Virtual (Indian River Virtual) was created in accordance with s F.S. is a franchise of the Florida Virtual School (FLVS), utilizing the FLVS curriculum instructed by Indian River County teachers. Students may enroll in IR Virtual through the FLVS website and select the district of instruction as. Part-time students may be enrolled in a public school, home education or in a private school that has affiliated with FLVS. Indian River Virtual School (IR Virtual School) Graduation requirements Except as otherwise authorized pursuant to F.S , for Accelerated high school graduation options, graduation requires the successful completion of a minimum of 24 credits, or an International Baccalaureate curriculum. Students will be advised of eligibility for the state scholarship program and post-secondary admissions. The 24 credits required for graduation may be earned through applied, integrated and combined courses approved by the Department of Education. English Language 4 credits ELA I, II*, III, IV Arts (ELA) ELA honors, Advanced Placement (AP), Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE), International Baccalaureate (IB), and dual enrollment courses may satisfy this requirement Mathematics 4 credits One of which must be Algebra I* and one of which must be Geometry Industry certifications that lead to college credit may substitute for up to two mathematics credits (except for Algebra I* and Geometry* Science 3 credits One of which must be Biology I*, two of which must be equally rigorous science courses. Two of the three required credits must have a laboratory component. An industry certification that leads to college credit substitutes for up to one science credit (except for Biology I*) An identified rigorous Computer Science course with a related industry certification substitutes for up to one science credit (except for Biology I*). Social Studies 3 credits 1 World History* 1 United States History.5 Economics (must include Financial Literacy).5 American Government Physical Education 1 credit Option 1: 1 Credit in Physical Education to include the integration of Health (HOPE) Option 2:.5 Credit Personal Fitness and.5 Credit PE and.5 Credit Health (other eligible courses or eligible course substitutions **) Students in a District that has chosen the Health Opportunities through Physical Education (HOPE) or the HOPE-PE variation will have the following PE waivers available: Completing two full seasons of an interscholastic sport at the junior varsity or varsity level shall satisfy the one credit requirement in Physical Education provided the student passes a competency test in physical fitness developed by the Florida Department of Education with a C or better. Either coursework or interscholastic sports with the passing of the Personal 3

4 Performing Fine Arts/Practical Arts Career & Technical Education Eight credits electives: 1 credit or ½ credit in each of the areas to the right Fitness state developed test with a 70% will satisfy the Physical Education requirement but not a combination. *If the student satisfies the Physical Education requirement through the interscholastic sport option, a one credit elective must be substituted for the Physical Education requirement. Completing two years in a Reserve Officer Training Corps (R.O.T.C.) class satisfies the full 1 credit PE requirement and the full 1 credit Performing Arts requirement. Students will take two additional elective credits to meet the 24 credit requirement. One credit in practical arts career and technical education or exploratory career and technical education One credit in performing fine arts to be selected from music, dance, drama, painting or sculpture. A course in any art form that requires manual dexterity or a course in speech and debate Four (4) credits in elective courses selected by the student as part of the education plan required by S F.S. These credits may be combined to allow intensive reading or mathematics intervention courses or credit recovery courses as described in S (2)(b)1,F.S. Elective courses are selected by the student in order to pursue a complete education program as described in S (3), F.S., and to meet eligibility requirements for scholarships For each year in which a student scores at Level 1 the statewide assessment the student must be enrolled in and complete an intensive reading course the following year. Placement of Level 2 readers in either an intensive reading course or a content area course in which reading strategies are delivered shall be determined by diagnosis of reading needs. Reading courses shall be designed and offered pursuant to the comprehensive reading plan required by F.S (9). For each year in which a student scores Level 1 or Level 2 on the statewide assessments, these courses may be taught through applied, integrated or combined courses and are subject to approval by the Department of Education. At least one course within the 24-credit program must be completed through online learning. World Languages Minimum 2 years of the same language required for admission into most universities and some scholarships. Not required for standard diploma graduation. Online course At least one course within the 24-credit program must be completed through online learning. Students must earn a 2.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale. A virtual driver education course may satisfy this online course graduation requirement. State Assessments* Students must earn a passing score on the Grade 10 ELA statewide assessment. Grade Point Average Students must take the Grade 11 ELA statewide assessment when implemented. Passing the Algebra 1 EOC is required and the results will count as 30% of the final course grade. Students must take the Geometry EOC and the results will count as 30% of the final course grade. If Algebra II is selected, Algebra II EOC assessments will count for 30% of the final course grade when implemented. Students must take the Biology EOC assessment and the results will count as 30% of the final course grade. Students must take the US History EOC assessment and the results will count as 30% of the final course grade. Cumulative GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale (unweighted) Evaluation of VIP Providers In the event the district contracts with a VIP provider, Indian River Virtual School will comply with all aspects of Board Policy 6320 and s F.S. Teacher and Staff Evaluation Information Employees of Indian River Virtual are subject to board policies, 3000 and 4000, and in accordance to the contracts collectively bargained for instructional and non-instructional staff. 4

5 Program Administration Information Indian River Virtual School will operate under the direct supervision of the Principal for Virtual Instruction. The Assistant Principal is supervised by the Director of Secondary Curriculum and is also under the direction of the Superintendent. The Principal is evaluated in accordance with the Instructional Leadership Performance Appraisal System (ILPAS). Attendance and Academic Progress Full-time students enrolled in Indian River Virtual School are enrolled in a public school and therefore must meet the attendance requirements pursuant to School Board Policy Students will be required to log into the district s learning management system to complete the daily attendance check-in. In addition to a daily attendance check, students will be expected to maintain adequate pace in all courses. The expected pace will be provided to all students at the beginning of each semester. The pace of all students will be monitored by the classroom teacher, guidance counselor and assistant principal. Students, who are not maintaining adequate pace, will be referred to the schools administration for appropriate interventions. Failure to abide by the policies and expectations may result in probationary status, removal from the program or denial of reenrollment. Qualifications for Online Instructors Employees of Indian River Virtual School are subject to School Board Policy Employment of Instructional Staff. Promotion and Retention Decisions Full-Time Students are governed to the district Student Progression Plan; the plan may be reviewed at: Promotion and retention decisions will be made by the staff of Indian River Virtual School. Part-Time Students are receiving instruction in one or more courses through Indian River Virtual School; however they are not in membership with Indian River Virtual School. Therefore, all promotion and retention decisions are made by each student s school of membership. Instructional Materials and Computing Resources Indian River Virtual School (IR Virtual School) utilizes several Virtual Instruction Providers. All curriculum utilized in this program is the creation of the virtual provider. All curriculum utilized by Indian River Virtual will meet the Florida State Standards. 5

6 In accordance with s F.S., the district will provide eligible students with computers necessary for participation in our full-time program and reimbursement for internet services. Families must apply for technology assistance and meet the requirements for the Free/Reduced Lunch program to be eligible to receive computer and internet assistance. Eligibility and Enrollment Full-Time Students Eligibility: Eligibility for our program is established by sections and , Florida Statutes. The specific eligibility requirements vary by program and/or grade level and are subject to change each legislative session. Regardless of program, all students must reside in Indian River County and maintain residence within the county for the entire enrollment period. If a family moves out of the county, the student will be required to withdraw. To be accepted, each student must have a positive history of attendance (if applicable) for the semester prior to enrollment, be on track from graduation/promotion and be eligible to enroll in a traditional school in the School District of Indian River County. In addition, students in an Exceptional Student Education (ESE) program with an active IEP or students with a 504/ADA Plan, must also have their plan reviewed by the IEP or 504 team to determine if the virtual school is an appropriate learning environment prior to acceptance being granted. Enrollment Process: Students interested in enrolling full-time must complete all stages of the application, registration and enrollment process. The virtual instruction programs are public schools and therefore all enrollment requirements established by the Florida Department of Education and the School Board of the School District of Indian River County must be met. o Meet with the principal of Indian River Virtual School o Review the Participation Agreement with the principal and agree to the requirements Part-Time Students Students may enroll part-time with Indian River Virtual (IR Virtual), if they: o Reside in Indian River County o Are eligible to attend a school in the School District of Indian River County o Are in membership in a public school, registered with the district as a home education student, or enrolled in a private school that has affiliated with Florida Virtual School (FLVS). o The course request has been approved by the student s guidance counselor. VIP contracts All VIP contracts will comply with district policies and the requirements of s F.S. 6

7 Requirements for testing FSA/EOC Requirements Section (6)(b), F.S. requires that each student enrolled in a virtual instruction program must take state assessment tests within the school district in which such student resides, which must provide the student with access to the district s testing facilities. Each District Virtual Instruction Program (VIP) will establish a process for notifying participating families in schools 7001, 7004, 7006, and/or 7023 of this requirement, the schedule for testing and the location each test will be administered. Upon receipt of test scores, each District VIP office will distribute scores in accordance with district practice. In the event a district contracts with a provider under school 7001, test results will be provided to the vendor. During the annual Student Data Corrections process, each District VIP will review DOE reported data for all programs (7001, 7004, 7006 and/or 7023) and make the appropriate adjustments. FAIR Full-Time virtual instruction program students in 7001, 7004, 7006 and/or 7023 may also be required to comply with state and district requirements for the monitoring of reading development. Students will be required to participate in FAIR (or other similar assessment, per district guidelines). Students will be required to participate in the manner and location as prescribed by the District VIP. Information will be distributed to participating families as appropriate. Additional District Testing If additional testing is required by the district, then full-time and part-time students in 7001, 7004, 7006 and/or 7023 may be required to participate. Families will be notified of all necessary testing by the District VIP office.
