1 The OHIO CORE Skills and knowledge for the 21st Century

2 Purpose of Ohio Core Establish rigorous core standards for all graduates Knowledge & skills for the 21st century (meet the demands of knowledge-based economy) Prepared graduates to succeed in postsecondary endeavors (jobs, college, military) Stronger coordination between high school and higher education Reduce remediation in college

3 Class of 2014 Students entering 8th grade in August 2009 will be held accountable for the requirements of the Ohio Core

4 Graduation Requirements credits of English 1/2 credit of Health 1/2 credit of Physical Education**** 3 credits of Social Studies*** (1/2 American History, I/2 American Government) 4 credits of Math* 3 credits of Science** 4 credits of Foreign Language, fine arts, business, careertechnical, family and consumer sciences, technology, agricultural science or other electives 1 Fine Arts Credit

5 *Math 4 units of math - including Algebra II or its equivalent

6 **Science Must be inquiry-based Laboratory experience 1 credit Physical Science 1 credit Biology 1 credit advanced study (Chemistry, Physics, earth space science, et cetera)

7 Social Studies (3 units)*** American history (½ unit) American government (½ unit) Integrate economics and financial literacy into one or more social studies, or other, course content All students must receive instruction in financial literacy

Financial literacy includes: Use of a budget Relationship of income level to supply and demand in the market Roles of people in the economy Consequences of choices affecting» Budgets» Savings» Credit» Philanthropy» investments Effect of interest rates on savers and borrowers

9 Physical Education**** Credit may be excused If local board adopts a policy Applies to students in interscholastic athletics, marching band or cheerleading for two full seasons Excused student must complete 1/2 credit (60 hours) in another course of study Additional PE courses can not be counted as an elective credit

10 Graduation Requirements Effective with the Class of 2014 Electives (5 units) Must be selected from any of the following: Foreign language Fine arts* Business Career-technical education Family and consumer sciences Technology Agricultural education English language arts Mathematics Science Social studies Not otherwise required

11 Graduation Requirements Effective with the Class of 2014 Fine Arts (2 semesters or equivalent) Anytime from grades 7 through 12 Must be music, art, theater High school credit may be granted if the coursework is high school level and taught by a high school licensed teacher Otherwise, coursework still counts toward two-semester graduation requirement Can apply to 5 electives required Career-technical students are exempt from the fine arts requirement

12 High School Credit Can be earned in grades 7-12

13 Graduation Requirements 2014 Must meet all Ohio Core Requirements Must pass all parts of the Ohio Graduation Test QuickTime and a decompressor are needed to see this picture.

14 Opt-Out The student must have attended high school for 2 years. The parent/guardian must file a signed, written statement consenting to the opt-out. The student and parent/guardian must agree to procedural requirements of the school. The school, student and parent/guardian must jointly develop an individual career plan. The school must provide counseling and support. The student must successfully complete the state s curriculum requirements in place in The student may not directly enter most 4-year colleges. Opt Out provision in effect for 3 years unless extended by legislature.

15 College Admission Must have completed the Ohio Core A few exceptions permitted If remediation is needed, admission will be delayed

16 College Remediation 4-year schools not allowed to offer remediation or reduced subsidy Exceptions: Central State U; Shawnee State U; Youngstown State U

25 Goal 1 (Reading) Emphasis will be placed on best instructional practices and assessment, in order to meet AYP targets, with all students scoring proficient or better on the state reading assessments by 2014.

26 Reading Strategies Identify and implement research-based reading comprehension strategies. Prioritize the needs of all students and implement a financially supported, systemic, 3-tiered intervention continuum. Implement the board adopted reading curriculum K-12.

27 Goal 2 (Math) Emphasis will be placed on best instructional practices and assessment, in order to meet AYP targets, with all students scoring proficient or better on the state math assessments by 2014.

28 Math Strategies Systemically implement district adopted curriculum and best instructional practices to actively involve and engage all students in the learning process. All teachers will use data from formative assessments to drive instructional strategies and interventions to ensure successful summative assessments by all students.

29 Goal 3 (Learning Environment) By 2014, Findlay City Schools will provide 21st Century learning environments that are safe and inviting, promote parent involvement and service learning, and set high expectations in order to increase student engagement, graduation rate, and parent satisfaction.

30 Learning Environment Strategies Model and apply 21st Century technology to design, implement and assess learning experiences, which engage students and improve learning. All students will be educated in environments that are safe, drug free and conducive to learning.
