Overview of CSS (and CSS3) Task 1a: Create a new external CSS file Task 1b: Styling background CSS Styling Task 2: Using ID and Classes Task 3: Set the box model properties Task 4: Styling the content s layout Task 5: Styling the navigation menu 1
CSS is used to control the style and layout of Web pages. Separate web page content from its design Interesting demonstration of what can be accomplished visually through CSSbased design: CSS3 is the latest standard for CSS. The standards for both HTML and CSS are maintained by W3C Detailed info about CSS3 can also be found here: New effects achievable with CSS3, e.g. Rounded Corners Box Shadow Text Shadow Opacity Border Image Animations etc TRY: 1) 2) 3) 2
The three ways to incorporate CSS: Inline style as the attribute of the HTML tag <p style="color:sienna;margin-left:20px;">this is a paragraph.</p> Internal All CSS codes in the HTML s head section <head> <style> p {color:sienna; margin-left:20px; body {text-align:center; </style> </head> External CSS codes reside in its own.css document and link is in the HTML s head section HTML source code: <head> <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="main.css"> </head> main.css : p {color:sienna; margin-left:20px; body {text-align:center; Note: You may also import CSS file within CSS: When document loads in a browser, declarations are sorted and given weight. Declaration with most weight wins when there is a conflict e.g. two or more declarations are applied to the same element Inline overwrites Internal overwrites External overwrites 3
CSS rule has two main parts: Selector: determines what the rule applies to normally the HTML element you want to style. Declaration: Surrounded by curly brackets { and ends with a semicolon ; consists of: Property the attribute you want to change Value the value that will be used for the change Use HTML files from previous tutorial or get a copy from a friend 4
Open index.html and put this line in the head section: <head> <title>my HTML5 Page</title> <link rel="stylesheet" href="css/main.css" type="text/css" /> </head> Repeat the above for all the other html files. Open any text editor and save as main.css in the project folder (if you follow the code above, you will have to put it in a folder called css ). Use the W3Schools editor to try styling each of these properties: Background - Text Fonts Tables Alternatively, you can also use WYSIWYG Online CSS editor; e.g.: 5
In main.css, list all the block-level HTML elements we used to structure the body content as selectors and set e.g. the background-color property for each: body { background-color: #a9b2b9; header { background-color: #67a0ca; nav { background-color: #a1b7c8; article { background-color: #bbc3c9; section { background-color: #c5cbd0; aside {background-color: #8bff7f; footer { background-color: #a1b7c8; Note: To quickly preview hex colours: Save and preview the HTML. Explore other background properties here: In addition to setting a style for a HTML element, CSS allows you to specify your own selectors called "id" and "class". An ID can only be used once to specify a style for a single, unique element. have higher specificity than class (overwrites class remember the cascade rule?) A class can be used several times you should use classes for items that you know you're going to use a lot. An example would be if you wanted to give several paragraphs on your webpage the same styling, you would use classes. 6
Use when applying a style to a group of HTML tags E.g. Most paragraphs are normal, some paragraphs are quotes CSS code:.classname { property: value; HTML source code:.first { text-align: center; font-style: italic; Assign the tag to the class using an attribute <p class= first > If you can t make it <tag class= classname > </tag> good, at least make it look good.</p> Use when applying a style to a single HTML tag a unique identifier to an element CSS Code: Id selector #idname { property: value; In HTML source code: Use an attribute to specify the id used for the tag #news { text-align: center; font-style: italic; <tag id= idname > </tag> <header id= news > Copyright 2006 </header> 14 7
For the ID: Assign different ID selectors to the sections. Style so that both sections are distinguishable from one another. For the Classification category Make the header and footer have the same font and background colour by assigning the same class name to them. Other additional stuff to include in the <head> element: 8
Dimension (width & height) Unit* for value: pixel, %, em, ex point, pica, mm, cm, inch Others : Auto *Read more here: Margin Clears an area around the border. The margin does not have a background color, it is completely transparent Border A border that goes around the padding and content. The border is affected by the background color of the box Padding Clears an area around the content. The padding is affected by the background color of the box Content The content of the box, where text and images appear When there are many properties to consider, it is possible to shorten the code by specifying all the properties in one single property. This is called a shorthand property. padding-top: 5px; padding-left: 10px; padding-right: 10px; padding-bottom: 5px; padding: 5px 10px 5px 10px; padding: 5px 10px; Effort to compile CSS shorthands: 9
Width & height: body { width: 960px; Margin: section { margin: px 10px; Padding: Border: Save CSS and preview HTML. section { padding: 5px 10px; border { border: 1px solid #fefefe; Elements can be positioned using the properties: top, bottom, left and right. these properties will not work unless the position property is set first. They also work differently depending on the positioning method. There are four different positioning methods: 1. Static: (default) positioned according to the flow of HTML code 2. Fixed: positioned relative to the browser window (and does not move) 3. Relative: A relative positioned element is positioned relative to its static position. 4. Absolute: positioned relative to the first parent element that has a position other than static. If no such element is found, the containing block is <html>. Absolutely positioned elements are removed from the normal flow. The document and other elements behave like the absolutely positioned element does not exist. Absolutely positioned elements can overlap other elements. Try experimenting with positioning here: 10
With CSS float, an element can be pushed to the left or right, allowing other elements to wrap around it. Float is very often used for images, but it is also useful when working with layouts. Try experimenting with floating elements here: Use CSS clear property to break the float The clear property specifies which sides of an element where other floating elements are not allowed. Try experimenting with floating elements here: Use float and clear to create a two-column layout for your content, e.g. section { aside{ background-color: #c5cbd0; margin: px 10px; padding: 5px 10px; border: 1px solid #fefefe; width: 442px; float: left; background-color: #8bff7f; clear: both; text-align: center; padding: 10px 10px; Floats all section (s) to the left No floating elements allowed on either the left or the right side Save and preview. 11
specifies if/how an element is displayed Setting the display property: block A block element is an element that takes up the full width available, and has a line break before and after it. inline An inline element only takes up as much width as necessary, and does not force line breaks. none: Hides an element, will NOT take up space Another property called visibility can be specified to hidden (e.g. visibility:hidden) but will take the same space. Try experimenting here: CSS pseudo-elements are used to add special effects to some selectors. The syntax: selector:pseudoselector { property: value; CSS classes can also be used with pseudoelements: Selector.class:pseudoselector { property: value; p.highlight:first-letter {color:#ff0000; 12
Selector Example Example description :link a:link Selects all unvisited links :visited a:visited Selects all visited links :active a:active Selects the active link :hover a:hover Selects links on mouse over :focus input:focus Selects the input element which has focus :first-letter p:first-letter Selects the first letter of every <p> element :first-line p:first-line Selects the first line of every <p> element :first-child p:first-child Selects every <p> elements that is the first child of its parent :before p:before Insert content before every <p> element :after p:after Insert content after every <p> element :lang(language) p:lang(it) Selects every <p> element with a lang attribute value starting with "it" You can also group them together: Same selector, multiple styles h1 { color:green; h1 { text-align:center; h1 { color:green; text-align:center; Same style, multiple selectors h1 { font-weight:bold; h2 { font-weight:bold; h1, h2 { font-weight:bold; 13
It is also possible to apply a style for a selector within a selector. section h1 { color:green; text-align:center; section p { color:#ff0; text-align:left; <nav> <ul> <li><a...</a></li> <li><a...</a></li> <li><a...</a></li> <li><a...</a></li> </ul> </nav> Nesting selectors Pseudo element nav { background-color: #a1b7c8; margin:0; padding:0; height:30px; nav ul{ list-style-type: none; margin: 0; padding: 0; nav li { display:inline; height:30px; line-height:30px; text-decoration:none; nav li a { padding:0 20px; color:#ffffff; text-decoration:none; nav li a:hover { background-color:#67a0ca; Save and preview. To remove bullets To remove line-breaks and display the list items side-by-side To remove underline for text links To change background colour on mouse hover 14
nav { background-color: #a1b7c8; margin:0; padding:0; height:30px; nav ul{ list-style-type: none; margin: 0; padding: 0; nav li { float:left; height:30px; line-height:30px; text-decoration:none; nav li a { display:block; padding:0 20px; color:#ffffff; text-decoration:none; nav li a:hover { background-color:#67a0ca; Will stack element side by side Will consider the whole block Save and preview. End of tutorial... Try the CSS quiz! st/quiztest.asp?qtest=css Note: To experiment / quickly preview demo of CSS effects : 15
