3 Who Are We? Annapolis Valley Health providing a continuum of integrated community based services from health promotion to palliative care including public health, mental health and addiction services serving greater than 85,000 people in Kings/Annapolis, providing referral services for Western Nova Scotia. Care and services is provided through approximately 3000 employees, physicians and volunteers. ~ People working with people and through people to care for and provide service to people ~

7 What did we do? We created a tool: At a Glance People Indicator Overview a tool To guide intentional conversations. To provide quick reference to help clarify expectations and responsibilities. To assess organizational data in relation to program/unit data. To embed the principles and practices that guide AVH. To support all members of the Health Care Team to be successful in their role. To impact quality and safety for all.

8 At a Glance People Indicators Overview: The Objective: To further integrate, align, and embed the Organizational Health Strategy into the way in which managers plan, manage and lead and the way in which members of the Health Care Team carry out their duties to support patient/client/community care and service delivery. AVH understands that to provide quality and safe care and service delivery, we must support all members of the Health Care Team to be successful in their roles.

13 What Do We Believe? Culture drives strategy. We do our work through our people. Work environment (and having a job) is a determinate of health. How we do our work has a direct impact on those for whom we provide care and services. Relationships and communication are key. Our Organizational health strategy lays the foundation for our leadership model, learning and development, human resources management, business planning and accountability strategies. Our data tells a story andweneedtobeevermindful of how the story continues to unfold.

Refining and creating tools to support our health team; further leadership development. 5. Further embedding, integrating and aligning and our strategies. 6. Ensuring the depth of the story connects: how we do our business; why we are employed in healthcare; understanding our Health Care Team members are part of the community we serve.

15 Quotes Business Planning considers the people and process changes required to achieve the financial target not simply a financial exercise; we reorient people, process and structures; measure and monitor our performance to ensure the multi pronged approach achieved its intended result. Monitoring encompasses financial accountability reporting through people indicators such as injury, illness, overtime, FTE to budget, performance appraisals and adverse event incident management. Integrated thinking and integrated performance measurement changes organizational behavior. ~ AVH Chief Financial Officer Quality and Patient Safety planning is always done under the larger umbrella of health, wellness & safety for all. We measure our work life and patient safety culture at the same time and we speak about the results of both surveys with our teams at the same time. This allows us to link and reinforce our interdependent messages, pushing the healthy workforce and patient safety culture forward together. We know we cannot have a healthy patient safety culture or achieve quality services without a healthy work environment.
